Small company of five, we build apartments in southeastern US. Err, we were. Employees are home, or working limited hours. My sock drawer and garage are damned organized, lately; and I'm feeling anxious. |

Aptbldr and Guell, I also know the feeling. Started working summers for my Dad at age 13. Went full time the day I graduated. Spent 5 years starting at age 23 in the Milwaukee/Madison area building mult-family (twin homes to 150 unit and multi building complexes) and residential remodeling carpentry. Spent the first 3 framing and the last 2 mostly trimming with some crane operating and framing mixed in. Extremely glad for my time there, had a fantastic boss and his son (same age as me). I mostly don't miss it, except for the 60 degree, sunny fall days. Then I miss pounding walls and setting trusses (roof and floor) on crane day. Now I've been back to hardwood flooring for 5 years-4th generation hardwood guy. Pretty much old-school site-sanded material. We do residential and commercial both-nice to have a mix. Work has been fairly steady, be nice to have more in the pipeline though. (Message edited by 12x9sl on February 20, 2010) (Message edited by 12x9sl on February 23, 2010) |

I sell Bows and arrows. 3rd anniversary of opening Double Lung Archery is coming up on Mar 1st! Just added another major bow line to my store. This addition brings me up to 7 brands of bows. I now will have 3 of the "Big 4" brands! I also just recently inked the deal to become the US bowhunting rep and agent for a safari operation in South Africa and will be going there in late May for a hunt.I will be handling all bowhunts for them for the entire US. Friday I went and bought out another archery shop that is closing. I bought everything they had in stock. With them closing I will be the only real, 100% archery, full time pro shop and indoor shooting range in the area. Sales are up 34% for the year so far! Life just keeps getting better |

I work in the Engineering Department of the commuter railroad in Chicago. Surveyor, track designer, right of way specialist and what ever else needs to be done. Never a dull moment, and I get to ride in a hi-rail truck on occasion. |

I'm a Jack of all Trades. I've had so many jobs over the past 45 years, I can't remember them all. The one Trade I loved the most was being a Hard Rock Miner. Had an Unrestricted Blasting license, and I was one of the best Jackleg drillers in my Local. I gave that up after my ankle got crushed. Right now, I build very trick X-Ray machines that give a 3-D image, and can be used in the Operating Room. However, on my Form 1040, under Occupation, I put Motorcyclist. |

I've done too many things over the years. For the last ten years, I've had a part time gig bouncing at the Dubliner Pub, an Irish pub here in St. Paul(currently my only job). I'll probably keep doing this 'till I can't chuck 'em out the door any more. |

Hmm, started out as a newspaper boy when in school. Took over the family side business of repairing home appliances when I graduated at 18 years old. Did that for 18 years. In between I worked at a shoe/boot company for 5 weeks gluing soles on boots, back to fixing appliances full time. In 1998, I bought out my father's hobby business of building billet grille inserts for hot rods and street rods and just inked a deal to build the grille insert in this years Street Rodder magazine road tour car.
I've been tig welding aluminum grilles full time since March of 2000. My inserts have been on numerous magazine covers and feature cars. I've worked with Chip Foose's dad, Sam and multiple other "big names" in street rodding. I've got an insert on a car competeing for the Ridler Award at this weekends Detroit Autorama. Winning the Ridler is akin to winning the Super Bowl/Grammy/World Series for the show car world. I've been on a lot of "Great 8" cars that qualify for the Ridler, but not the Ridler winning car. Hoping that will change this year (fingers crossed!) My best and most challenging job is being a loving husband of almost 20 years and father to my 14 year old daughter and 12 year old son.

Retired aerospace production manager/engineer after a 30 year career. I was lucky to be with a company that required us to be hands on types and actually enjoyed that aspect more than the administrative. If I had a chance for a "do-over" it would have been in mechanical or materials enginering. Absolutely loved working with coatings, adhesives and process problem development/problem solving. Sure miss that part of it. |

Nevrenuf, that's part of it! It's unbelievable how few take pride in their work. If it won't fly in my own home I'm not gonna do it in someone else's. I started this trade under a finicky old school tradesman and it stuck. If you can't do it right, don't bother! |

Started out in 1972, 19 years old, sweeping out the shop for $3.50 an hour. At lunch when the other guys were relaxing, I'd ask the design engineers for a set of blueprints so I could try to find out how the pipe I fabbed was put together. Worked my way into the office so I wouldn't have to put up with the cold in the winter or heat in the summer. Fast forward a bunch of years and I am running my own company with me doing the contracting side and my brother doing the finance part. We've done large projects all across the country. For some reason I wish I was back in the fab shop - those were the good old days. |
