I remember way back when I was just a runny nosed kid. We were taught in school about the Red Menace. The Olympics were always about beating the Russians back then. |

The 'Miracle On Ice' in 1980 ... watched it live, and can still watch it again, and again, and again, and again ... it never gets old. |

It wasn't quite as satisfying as it was back in the day when the Stars and stripes flew over the red flag with the hammer an sickle but it was still nice. |

Skating is possibly the worst of the Olympic sports. Off camera it's all politics even at lower levels of competition. I dated a skater for a bit over a year and learned way too much about what goes on. More fun watching sausage making. |

Not the point. Although i don't dispute your statement. The American did skate better BTW. |

Not my favorite either truth be told. I am one of the few people left that likes the Olympics in general though. In fact I want to get together a curling team for next time. Who's with me? |

All girl teams are best. They already know how to sweep. Badumbum. |

If the outcome is determined by judges, it's not a sport. It may be athletic, it may be competitive, it may be very entertaining, but it's not a sport. Still, nice to see the American underdog get one over on Ivan. I swear that guy with the blond mullet was in the first Die Hard movie. |

Johnny skated well. His personal style is not my style, but he IS what he IS, and makes no apologies, and I respect that. |

Speaking of fashion... why are people hating on the snowboard uniform so much... I think it is kind of cool...

Char I loved the boarding uniform. But the crown of roses was a little much even for me. |

I think the uniform fits. Snowboarding was born of the skateboarding culture, which was grunge before there was grunge. I have many thrift store clothes that look a lot like that (purchased in the early 80's when I HAD to shop at thrift stores) which I can no longer wear because I don't want to look like a "me too" arsewipe. |

Jredx: Boxing is right on the fence and always open to debate. Boxing matches are frequently decided by judges, but they don't have to be. At it's core, boxing has a mechanism to determine a winner that is totally independent of judges. When the fight results in a knockout or TKO, it's definitely a sport in my book. Olympic boxing, with it's point system and blatantly biased judges, is a complete joke. Here's what I look for in a sport: 1) It has to have a strenuous cardiovascular component that is central to the contest, not just the training. 2) It has to have an element of physical risk for the participants. 3) The winner cannot be determined solely by judging. So... snowboard cross = sport, snowboard halfpipe <> sport. Curling <> sport. Ice dancing... no way. |

You don't think that spinning around jumping and dancing on small pieces of metal on frozen water is dangerous. You sir are a fool. |

I think any uniform that makes you look like a hesher who just rolled out of the back of his van/winter home does not show much national pride. On the other hand, our snowboarding unis look much better than the dayglow abominations that the Germans have been wearing this year. |

So because some of the participants are gay its not a sport. Well that makes MUCH more sense.... |

Drkside79: I never said it wasn't dangerous, but thanks for the insult anyway. Let's go over this again... Is Figure Skating: 1) Aerobically strenuous? Yes, absolutely. Sporting. 2) Dangerous to the participants? Clearly (less so in ice dancing because of the rules restricting lifts and throws). Sporting. 3) Decided by judges? Always. Not sporting. There you go. The judging ruins it for me as a sporting endeavor. |

Curling <> sport. So by your own judging curling is not... 1) It has to have a strenuous cardiovascular component that is central to the contest, not just the training. 2) It has to have an element of physical risk for the participants. Well I guess you can stub your toe, but seriously does it look like this guy gets a good cardio work out in a curling event?

Spidey: The sweepers look like they get a little bit of a sweat going, but on whole it does not seem very strenuous or risky. Not a sport (I don't know how to insert the "not equal" symbol here, so I used "<>" to represent that). |
