We have folks from a variety of countries here? What's the quick version of the beginnings of your country's current constitution (or equivalent)? I'll start with the USA. We broke free from England in 1776 largely over various disputes over England's power over the 13 colonies. We signed The Declaration of Independence in 1776, but didn't ratify our constitution until 1787. We had several elected Presidents before the constitution was ratified, but the first President under our constitution was George Washington who some at the time wanted to make King of the United States. Washington wisely declined the offer to become King opening the door for the representative republic that we currently have. So let's learn about some other countries. I think this could be interesting. | ||

A good series that Mr Grumpy. this country i live in has been invaded so many times that we are really a mongrel breed in Britain. the invasion is still going on in the form of immigration. The Uk is the 3rd most densely populated country in europe, yet the government/politicians still allow the invasion to continue. | ||

If you're really wanting to know about American History and it's beginnings, you'd do well to read "The 5000 Year Leap" Please though, if you're a "progressive" "liberal" "socialist" or the like the book will probably piss you off royally, and you'll want an old fashioned book burning/banning. | ||

All beginnings are political. It could still be a great thread. I'm just not sure if it will get enough input. I think it would be great to hear some history of whatever country from their perspective. I wouldn't even mind hearing our history from their perspective. | ||

Not to say that the US is squeaky clean on that, but wasn't it pretty much England, France and Spain that sailed across the ocean to lay claim to the lands occupied by the American Indians. For some reason the US always seems to get the blame for what was done to the Indians and also the slavery rap. The truth is the die was cast when the 13 colonies declared their independence. | ||

The Bison were nearly wiped out so as to wipe out the natives. Sad but true. The Bald Eagle was nearly wiped out because they taste like Spotted owl  The Grizzly Bear, well, I don't know. I'm not sure I can live in harmony with something that would just as soon kill me as look at me. Note that I have not personally killed any bears, nor do I know anyone who has, though I am sure there are some folks on this board who have. | ||
