“All of the hospitals are packed with people. It is a catastrophe.”
— President René Préval of Haiti

What a mess, and to hit the "poorest" nation in the Western Hemisphere, too sad. I hope we get some help to our neighbors. Fast.

Man, I hate that. Prayers up for those poor folks. At least the airport is reported to be functional, so aid flights can head there ASAP.

Anyone remember the movie way back about Haiti, zombies, and an American dude getting the zombie treatment then buried alive? Heck, I've got it on VHS but it's buried...

What's "poor" about it are the construction standards. I hope they can afford to rebuild properly so this tragedy isn't repeated.

I just saw an estimate of 500,000 potential casualties.
That might be high but you can bet there will be 10's of thousands.
Schools, hospitals, office buildings, government buildings all collapsed.

This is a bad one...

"What's "poor" about it are the construction standards"

True. Same thing all over the world. Turkey gets quakes, big ones, and thousands die trapped in unreinforced concrete buildings. It's a travesty. One of their fault lines gives a little every few decades, and the epicenter keeps moving west down the fault. Istanbul is in for a big one within the next few decades, and the buildings there are centuries old. I can only imagine the death toll.

Haiti is worse off than Cuba ? Castro must feel pretty good about that ranking.

Any news on a tidal swell? Like what happened with the tsunami in 05?

Interesting side note...

So far, Cuba is on the short list of countries that have not agreed to send aid, and they are their closest neighbor. Also absent are Middle Eastern countries with the exception of Israel.

Not really, those same countries didn't help during the Tsunami of 2005, and that mostly affected Muslim countries. I'd say they're just being consistent, not racist.

See how I turned that around? : )

Those evil Jews. How dare them lend a helping hand.

I'm watching, " The Next Megaquake" on the Science Channel which explores a magnitude 9.0 quake off the coast of the Pacific Northwest causing massive devastation in Seattle, etc and a massive sunami affecting Japan, Hawaii, etc.

They should break Robertson's foot, give him a towel to wear, no medicine, no water, no food and drop his a$$ in the middle of that destroyed city and see if he develops a little compassion... what a f'in moron... he is an emberassment to America...

If I had EVER wished for Hell and Damnation for ANY soul, it would be for Robertson.

Somebody MUST muzzle that fool. Were I in his church, I'd be ashamed.

He is evil in a smarmy, smiling face with a LEGION of willing followers.

Pat Robertson can just be ignored.

And Pat Robertson isn't the only one with whacked out ideas on why this happened. Just listen to Danny Glover about 2 minutes in. WTF???

In defense of Robertson and (to a lesser extent) Glover.

That Robertson has a severe case of foot in mouth disease is obvious, but his heart is in the right place. He has sent millions of dollars in aid (especially medical supplies) to Haiti since the earthquake. What have you done?

Glover never said that AGW caused the earthquake. If you read the transcript it reads more like he was comparing the response to the earthquake by the US (especially) and the World as a whole to the response to AGW in Copenhagen. That is his view, which I disagree with totally, to which he is entitled to (and welcome to). So yes, Glover's remark was stupid, just not THAT stupid.

Where did you find a transcript for Glover on that? Some of it sounds pretty muffled, but it sure sounds like he blamed what happened on global warming. He wouldn't be the fist to blame earth quakes on global warming.

I found a transcript of the offending sentence here: http://jammiewearingfool.blogspot.com/2010/01/that -didnt-take-long-danny-glover.html

“When we see what we did at the climate summit in Copenhagen, this is the response, this is what happens, you know what I’m sayin’?”

When you compare this with his interview on ABC http://abclocal.go.com/kgo/story?section=news/ente rtainment&id=7219808 it's clear (to me anyway) he is referring to the response to the earthquake, not the cause of it.

I agree, the dialog is hard to follow on that telephone interview. Perhaps that's why I am inclined to give Glover the benefit of the doubt. I know what I get like talking on the phone....
