Very sorry for your loss! Please do not be too hard on yourself for not being there. Suzie may have not wanted you to see her that way because see knew it would be very hard on you. I also have lost dogs, old and young, some I was not there for at the end and one that we had the vet euthanize in our living room. Either way, any way, we will be with our pets in the future! | ||

Right now Froggy is looking for answers on why...we shall see. It's just not fair that our dogs don't live longer. I'm sitting here with 3 of them on the couch with me as I type this. Had to put down my 17 year old Chow Chow, almost 2 years ago, and I still expect her to jump up in my truck with me to go somewhere/anywhere. I mourn with you. Anonymous poster: Shameful post. | ||

When we loose our furkids it hurts...there are no words to express how much pain we feel. Many of us here on BadWeB have been where you are. I won't tell you that time heals, but it does give you the ability to cope with the loss of Susie. We're are on our 4th and 5th Old English Sheepdog. While they will never replace the others we've lost, they've brought other joy to our lives. Susie has many BadWeB furkids with her now. She loved you and you obviously loved her and that's all that really matters when it comes down to it. Froggy - good job and thank you! | ||

I understand your pain for the loss of a loved pet. I've lost two and it doesn't get any easier, just remember that you gave your pet a home with the best you could give. for people that don't have pets, just don't understand that they are an extension of your family and much more than just an animal. My Cocker Spaniel is now 11 years old and he has seizures sometimes and that reminds me that someday he won't be with me any longer. | ||

This thread brings up sad memories.. Having said that, I'm sorry for your loss. I've said this before, but you faithfully took care of your final task as a caregiver for your Suzie. It's our responsibility to take care of them until the end regardless how much it hurts. It is your final act of kindness. Don't beat yourself up over not staying in the room. At that point, Suzie really didn't care, she just wanted it over. They have a weird way of knowing when it's time. The story above about the doggie door incident is but one example. As a family we've been through this with 2 dogs (15 1/2 and 7) and 2 cats. Unfortunately we have a feline who's time is near. It's hard. Period. This is one thing that doesn't get easier. I'm so sorry, Phil. It really is one of the toughest things to deal with, but Brad is right, dont beat yourself up over not being with her at the very end. You were with her for her whole life, and seventeen years is a darned good run for a dog. I lost two Labradors this summer, Zeke was thirteen and had maniacally stuffed as much life into his time as any dog could, and his best friend, Chester, gave up his fight with a malignant adrenal tumor a little over a month later. Less than a month after that, their companion, Maxine, a beautiful and sweet cat, ended her seventeen years peacefully. Life is short, and we know theirs will probably be shorter than ours, making the love and respect we have for our pets among the most honest and honorable things we are capable of as humans. Just focus on the best of the time you had with her, and once some time passes and the pain receeds a bit, consider finding another animal who could use a loving home. My thoughts are with you, and know that nothing can change the fact she had a great life because of you. | ||

Phil, This is really putting iot out there but sometimes a new pooch makes it all better. I know out in California there is a Crisis going on with Chihuahua's in there shelters. Just a thought but maybe in your pooches memory you could adopt one like her. You may just save a life. Suzie would love ya for that. | ||

Thank you all. Really, this amount of support is incredible, and means a ton to all of us. It still hurts to think of her once in a while. I still wake up and find myself watching my feet since Susie was a shadow, everywhere I would go she'd follow. If I was in the shower she would scratch and push the door open just to get in. We're thinking of getting another, not sure if it's going to be another Chihuahua or not, maybe a Boston Terrier or an English Bulldog. I'd love a Great Dane but those are huge. Me and my sister are going to have pendants made with Susies' ashes, this way we can always have a piece of her with us, as weird as that sounds. Or have her ashes made into a diamond(s). If somebody would want to, PM me with what the annony guy posted, I'd like to see just how heartless this prick is. Again, thanks to everyone for their support, except the annony guy; his soul can burn in a lake of fire for all I care. My sister will be bringing pictures of Susie over after she's making a photo album, then I'll post some if anyone wanted to see her. Thank you all for caring so much, your support will be taken dearly, I'm sure Susie is thanking all you guys too. | ||

I just had to put my dog down. I had him for three years since he was 8 weeks old. He was great with the family but started snipping at other people. Took him for a walk in the woods. Annon, you are just an animal also on one level. You are also a prick. Dogs are social animals that definitely make a connection with us and are conscious, aware creatures. I don't belong to Petta or anything and I hunt so death and killing are no stranger to me but I have compassion and respect for animals and pets like dogs in particular. If you had any kind of experience with dogs beyond the superficial you would realize the connection that can and often does develop. They can and are indeed members of the family. We have three and our little Min-Pin is crippled in the hind end due to a fall from our spiral stairs. She wears a diaper and can not walk. I suppose you think this is stupid (it wouldn't work if it was our lab) but I don't give a shit what you think especially if you don't have the balls to post under your name. | ||

There is a difference and I wont go into trying to explain it here, but it doesnt mean you loved the person less. I just wanted to say, as others have, I feel your pain and while some will want you to feel stupid for it (sometimes we even question it ourselves), you are not alone. | ||

Hurts like hell - Different than losing a loved one: A dog has been with you places you would never drag a family member. - The time you tipped the canoe over running the spring flood. - The time you were becalmed & dropped the paddle in the middle of the lake on a cold November day. - The day you decided to climb the highest hill in the county just for the hell of it. - . . . A dog usually feels that it's in the job description to liven up mundane tasks such as yard work by retrieving the neighbor's cat or pulling the skirt off of the Jehovah's Witness lady or . . . . Greg (woody1911a1), I completely understand how you're probably feeling. The best thing for me was having my family around, and always remember that Toby is in a much better place where pain, suffering, disease, etc... are completely unheard of. And I like to think that they get to eat their fav food, for my Susie it was what ever we were eating, she'd look at her food then look up at one of us, look at her plate again, walk in a circle a few times and look at us some more. She will surely never be forgotten, either will Toby. If he could speak, he would talk your ear right off about the wonderful life you treated him with, about all the good times, the fun times. Also, don't let that anonymous person bring you down. He's obviously a heartless bastard, the type who leaves their dogs out in freezing weather, or does their collar so f*cking tight it eats into their neck. No matter what though, always remember Toby lived a paradise of a life, the best a dog could possibly want. My most dearest sympathies to all of your family, stay strong for he wouldn't want you crying, instead he'd rather you think about the happy times you had together and have you smiling instead of crying. | ||

'cept mebbe a healthy family of crotch crickets. Even Michael Vick found a way to abandon such a sub-human mindset. As I write this, my 16yo Basenji has his chin on my leg, needy old pup- I fear it won't be too much longer for him on this Earth. When the time comes, I'll just crawl under a rock for a week.
