Smart move. There's a niche to fill.

The Super Duke 990 is a really cool machine

Had a Super Duke for a week while the local shop put tires on my Blast. I'd own one.

Interesting, let's see how aggressive their pricing is in that strategy. RC8 would be nice. And bring that car along too.

Not wanting to sound rude, but why should he? Does he have a patent on exhaust location?

He wasn't the first guy to throw an exhaust under a bike.
See 1907 silent Grey fellow?

I think the patent was in the motivation of putting it under there. (centralized mass)

Likewise, perimeter brakes were around for a long time but the Buell patent details lowering unsprung weight.

I don't see how KTM would be "filling a gap". How are these really any different than what's already offered by the Japs and Germans? The only "gap" left by Buell, if that's what being referred to, would be in reference to an American sportbike company, and KTM ain't American.

They do have some pretty sweet bikes though.

And that stupid website murdered my browser. Let me reiterate how much I HATE Internet Explorer, especially here at work.

I believe the Buell patent for the perimeter brake has to do with the way it's mounted to the rim.

Sword, there isn't too many Street Fighters like Buell out there that are affordable and non-japanese. Triumph comes to mind, who else?

KTM may do very well here with their Rotax powered bikes. Especially since there's one less street fighter out there now that was using a Rotax. Buell using it, and being sucessfull, may lead to some success for KTM

who else?

Ducati & Benelli off the top of my head.

Benelli even has a street-fighter with side mounted radiators call the "Cafe Racer"

KTM doesn't use Rotax, the LC4 and LC8 engines as well as their dirt line engines are proprietary.

I was in serious lust over the Superduke 990 when it first came out, but for the first two years it was "Europe only" and I got tired of waiting. Buell came out with the XB12Ss and that's all I needed to get me off of my M2 Cyclone. When KTM finally did bring the Superduke over, it was almost 50% more expensive than my Lightning Long so I knew I'd made the correct choice.

The XB12Ss has since been replaced by my 1125R, but that bike is still cheaper than the Superduke even when I bought it at full MSRP. At today's prices, for the cost of one Superduke 990 you can have TWO 1125R or 1125CR models. AND you'd have to deal with the mess and hassle of a chain drive, too.

If the KTMs were more in the price ballpark I'd consider them, but right now (in this economy) they aren't even in my sights.

"Affordable" Barker.

Duc's Street Fighter is 14 grand isn't it?

How much is a Benelli and where's a dealer?

So what are we left with? What's the closest thing to a Buell? Super Duke? Speed Triple? FZ-1? What has the steering geometry, centralized mass and torque?

KTM developed their own engine. The RC8 is the race version of the LC8 motor, all the 990 cc motors are LC8's, the 690 motors are LC4's, the RC8 I believe is either 1148 when it came out and maybe 1190 or something now. I sold them a couple years back, the engine cases resemble the Rotax, but it is not a Rotax. Now the BMW 800 uses a Rotax motor, same as the Aprilia Pegoso and they are built side by side in an Aprilia factory, but KTM is on their own powerplant wise. I rode the RC8, a friend has one, stunning machine really, but it is the same seating position or very similar to the RSV Aprilia, ass high and hands low, for a tall guy, prolly just fine, but for me, cause I am a midget at 5'6", I felt like the monkey on the football. The Buell's have always fit me best.

U.S. Patent # 6267193 B1

From the patent

Abstract

"A motorcycle includes a muffler defining an air scoop for directing air toward the motorcycle's engine and transmission assembly. The muffler also has a substantially planar upper portion and a lower portion having a convex surface. "

The question again....
Does he have a patent on exhaust location?

The one closest to me, in Illinois, doesn't even list Bennelli on their website. Sweet bikes. Saw the "jet" powered one at RA 3 years ago. Sweet looking bike with those yellow fans looking back at ya. Come to think about it I think it was at a tent set up for this particular dealer.

Yeah, nice and sexy, but can it do what the Ulysses XT can do? Something sporty, 2-up comfort and performance. That is what I am looking for, a replacement for the XT.....in the future, hopefully not anytime soon.
