Just curious. Imagine a new motorcycle with Buell's name on the side, a different Rotax engine from the current 1125 but still a Rotax unit, fuel in frame, chain drive, the money for all of this comes from Bombardier but the the bikes are assembled in Mexico. Would any of you guys accept that? Because thats what Erik is talking to BRP/Can-Am about. Just wondering what you guys thought about that. | ||

Canada would be a whole lot better than Mexico. I can't imagine manufacturing anything in that hell hole. Besides, with all the illegals running around this country why not keep the manufacturing where it is and hire a bunch of illegals? The current administration won't even bat an eye. | ||

Unfortunately BRP is moving all of their ATV and Spyder manufacturing to Mexico from Quebec. BRP wants to expand current vehicle manufacturing and get into two wheelers, hence the resurrection of the CAN-AM brand two years ago. BRP has been working on some dirt bike designs and various engine work with Rotax. Along comes Harley getting rid of Buell and MV and suddenly BRP has an easy way to start selling two wheelers. From what I have been told MV is the big carrot for BRP. Buell would be more of an afterthought. Mexican production brings labour cost down enough to make MV more competitive with the big four. My source is from BRP. Erik Buell is in Canada for the month of December. Announcements from BRP come in Feb 2010. | ||

Buell made in Mexico? Please. Bad enough parts of my XB9R are made in China. MV made in Mexico? Not a freaking chance. Not at the $$ and semi-exclusive status they try to maintain. I'd rather buy a Kawasaki. At least those are still made in Japan....wait, not for much longer... | ||

From what I have seen in the auto industry, Mexican units are sub par from US and Canadian models. Even some vehicles like the Chevy Silverado, has plants in all 3 countries, and it isn't hard to spot the Mexican built ones on the dealer lots. | ||

I'd consider it. I'd rather it be American or Canadian, but the only other bike I see that interests me right now is a FZ6R. There isn't much way to hook up with an American manufacturer that I can see. I like the design of the Buells. I like the handling, the steering geometry, the way they seem to know what I want to do at the same time I think about it. If I'm going to have to buy foreign anyway, I might as well keep it on my continent. | ||

Depends. If Erik had full control to build the bike he wanted and of the quality he wanted then sure, why not. Though no where as cool as 'Made in America', it would probably be the only bike under $40K that would appeal to me just like the current Buells are at the moment. Now if a big corporation brings Erik on to build bikes and mandates certain shortcuts and sub quality parts to keep costs down and profits way up forget about it. I can always get that at HD. | ||

I'd rather not. Given the fact that for me to buy a sport bike now it's going to be made in Japan, Korea, China, England, Italy, Germany, etc. So since I'm not going to get ANY sportbike choices made in the US, I'll take a Buell made where ever it is made. I would prefer an "American" sport bike actually be at least assembled in America. | ||

My source is from BRP. Sounds to me like you need a new source, but I've been wrong before. You lost me at "chain drive." El ditto-o. Take an 1125R, remove the Buell-specific powerplant and slap in some off-the-shef unit and use a chain drive, and all you're paying for is a gas tank and a front brake. I'd rather buy Italian, English or even Japanese than Mexican. | ||

I hate to say this but I don't think I would buy one if it was made in Canada either. This economy is so bad we need to find as much stuff local as possible. I look first in my town, then my county, state then country. Next I just do without. |
