I have these very large web weaving spiders hanging underneath my gutters. They don't hurt nothing, so I leave 'em be to eat the pesky bugs. The one that caught my eye is the yellow/orange one. His/her buddy is right down the roof a little ways at the next corner. Anyone know what type of spiders these are?   And then there's Jerry. I found Jerry last year in the yard and I try to keep him safe and make sure he spends his evenings in the yard to eat all the bugs for us. On occasion I bring him inside and get him cleaned up with fresh water and he hangs out and watches some TV with us before I return him to his duties outside. I am very concerned Jerry is going to have a rough time this winter as we are expecting it to get very cold and icy. I am thinking about bringing him inside for the winter. Say Hi to Jerry!   | ||

Jerry will be fine with the winter, trust me they are good hibernators.  Personally I would keep him in, thats just me. | ||

I don't know what kind of spiders those are, but I've got some very similar ones around our place. Don't know about you, but they give ME a bad case of the heebeejeebees. Got plenty of big shiny black widows, too. If I can get the spiders to eat the ants, we'd have it made. Al PS - Hi Jerry! You like ants? | ||

I haven't seen Jerry eat ants, but I am sure he would. I have seen him eating a bunch of moths and flittery bugs around my porch. I agree with you on the spider thing. I don't mind spiders and try not to kill 'em if they don't hurt nothing... IE: people. So the browns, blacks and biteys get squished. I used to keep scorpions inside in a large tank. Emperors. They are cool critters but that got me into learning more about insects and what not. I think I'll get a spot ready for Jerry tomorrow and see what he thinks about it. | ||

Couldn't tell ya about the spiders. Jerry would love my pond out front. I got about 6 frogs that hang out around the pond. It's gone to hell after I broke my arm. They love it. It's a little murky and my frog buddies have made babies. There are tons of tadpoles in it right now. | ||

geforce, don't know about where you are at, but a long time back I discovered an unknown worm in my fish tank. I captured it, bottled it and took it to my local museum and they were happy to contact me a few days with identification. | ||

for the spider id. I always make my 10 year old do a basic search on the search engine of his choosing for spiders of the southeast, snakes of the southeast, etc. and usually come up with an answer relatively quick plus he learns something too. maybe perform a search for spiders of the midwest? a lot of info out there on the web, no pun intended of course. | ||

My expert advice (sense I have two daughters and a wife that hate spiders) is to suck them suckers up with a shop vac. Then follow up with a shot of Raid down the hose for good measure(outside of course). You'll have 50,000,006 of em if you just let them hang around. | ||

Talk about cold hibernation...I was cleaning out an ice bin at a job one day...at the very bottom, under maybe 200 pounds of old ice, I found a large rain frog. It was stiff and seemed dead...I set it on a cardboard box next to the machine so I could examine show it to the machine's owner...and show the benefits of regular maintenance... As I was working, maybe 15 minutes later, I caught movement out of the corner of my eye...I have laid the frog on it's back...now it was sitting upright!!! after a bit, I picked it up and took it outdoors and released it in a flower plot...it hopped off....true story.. | ||

My Dad caught a giant Bull Frog when I was a kid and I kept him in a big tank at the house. That sucker would eat anything. He was fat, tough and just cool as hell to hang out with. That's why I try and step outside every night and check on Jerry. He doesn't hurt anything and he eats a lot of the critters on my porch. I'd like to keep him around for a while. But when the winter comes it's many months before he comes back out again. | ||
