I haven't been around here much lately, but I wanted to stop by and say hello. I am leaving Monday with five friends to ride from Tampa to North Carolina. We stay in a buddy's cabin and do day trips for a few days and then ride back. The whole trip, up and back lasts 7 days. We do the normal rides, the Cherohala, the Dragon, the Blueridge, etc.

I am so looking forward to the trip. I always do, but even more than usual this year. The reason I haven't been on the site much lately is that the last two months at work have been terrible. I can't really go into it, but let me just say that a couple of people decided to go after me at work and came close to getting me fired. I am still not out of the woods yet, but things are looking much better. I have never experienced anything like this in my life and wouldn't wish it on anybody. I have a good job with good pay. Anyway, let me just leave it at that. There is much more I would like to say, but the internet is not the place, attorneys and all.

I had planned on having a new bike by now. I had set aside a pretty good down payment and was getting serious about narrowing my choices down. When this hit, however, I decided to hold onto my money and keep riding my FXDX. So, another year in the mountains on the Harley. I really thought I'd have a Buell by now. Maybe by next year.

I wish I was leaving in the morning. Be safe.

Dan

hey dan, still haven't had the chance to meet ya but i hope you have fun up there and there is nothing like being on a buell up there. hope things get better for ya at work. nothing worse than being around a bunch of asshats. i had people gunning for me on one job also and that is one reason why i'm not in the carpenter's union anymore. if you get a chance, stop on by and i'll let you find out what you'll be missing up in the mountains by letting you take a ride on the xt.lol. talk to you later.

Hey Dan, If you are heading back toward Tampa on Saturday Oct 3rd, swing through Suches, GA. Buelltoberfest will be running full steam by then.

Nothing the matter with your FXDX in the mountains, Dan, if you ride her reasonably.

A couple of things I did to mine really helped out in the corners.

1. Replaced OEM Dunlops with Metzlers. Other good tires are Avons, and I think Michelin now makes tires for Harleys too. Tire pressure for Metzlers is higher than Harley recommends for Dunlops. Should be: 38# front, 44# rear

2. I found that the factory recommendations for setting up the suspension resulted in a too soft, underdamped set up for mountain riding.
Here is how I set up the suspension:

a. Front preload: went from 4 lines showing, to no lines showing, first line flush with for top. This gave rider sag of 3/4” plus 1/2” static sag. = 1 1/4 = 32mm
b. front compression and rebound made two clicks harder after initial test ride.
c. rear rebound two clicks harder to max hard= 1 click

3. I also fitted a front fork brace and an Steering damper. I have an old Harley front fork brace that you can have if you want it, ( and if I can find it:-). Chrome is kinda crappy though.

Good luck on your trip. Sounds great.

Hey Neil, I have ridden an XT and I liked it very much. My only real complaint is that I like the Outdoorsman bags better than the stock bags.

Adrian, we will be heading back that Saturday. I'll see what I can do about going through Suches. I'd love to meet you guys. The problem is that I'm with five other guys who don't really have an interest in Buells. We'll see, but I don't really have much hope unless I split off from the group.

Jon, I run Avons on my bike and really like them. I'll look at the suspension changes. I know pretty much nothing about suspension set up. I do have fun in the mountains on my FXDX, but I would like something at least a bit sportier. I realize I am too old and FAT to ride a sportbike 300-500 miles a day, which I do regularly on my FXDX. The Uly though is a possibility.

I'm having a hard time waiting to pack, I am so anxious to go.

It takes so long to get here and passes so quickly. Kind of like Christmas for a kid I think.

Even if they don't like Buells, the roads are great and Helen is close by. I'm sure they would be up for a little Oktoberfest!

Dan,

Sorry to hear what you are dealing with at work. I went through that once with a co-worker. I just kept to my job as best I could. One day he decided to have a show down with our boss and they escorted him out the door. I was later told that they almost let us both go just so they weren't "taking sides", but decided it would be wrong as it was clear what was going on. It was a very stressful few months though.

Be safe on your trip and have loads of fun. I wish I was heading that way!
