I've got a deal on an '05 Buell XB12R from a buddy who works at a car dealership. He's offering it to me for just under $4300, his cost + $500. Here's the thing though, it's a salvaged title(theft recovery). It only has 2300 miles on it, but the rear tire looks like 5k. The clutch is slipping like crazy; takes a while getting up to 50mph(10sec maybe). There's sufficient free-play at the clutch handle, so I'm not sure if it's just an adjustment thing. Would the internal adjustment perhaps fix something like this? The only other thing I noticed on the bike was light scratches on the right side, broken right front signal, and a crack in the air dam. So, it's obvious that the thieves had their fun with it. I talked to a Harley shop here and they said $300 to replace the clutch, which I'd probably have to pay for since I'm already getting a low price on the bike. I guess what I need help with is knowing what this sounds like to you guys, a lemon or something worth while? I really like the bike, and it's a killer price if it's just a bad clutch...

on an XB12R, you should be able to hit 50mph in about 2 blinks of an eye, not TEN SECONDS.......

i'd stay clear. thats just my 2 cents.

As far as tires...I've had threads showing at 3000. If the tire is a dunlop, for me, they wear pretty quick. I have no knowledge on the possibilities of a clutch adjustment problem. And what do you mean by "air dam." Are you referring to the plastic piece just under the frame that goes between the frame and the engine. By the jugs?

The clutch might be as simple as new fluids and cable adjustment.

Do you have any friends who ride a 12R (who would know how it oughta act) that could give it a spin?

you could try speed shfting it (without the clutch) to try and see if its a clutch or powertrain issue. just get the revs up, roll off throttle, click up a gear. warning, may bolt you forward if you arent matching RPM well.

I highly doubt the clutch is worn to the point where it needs to be replaced in only 2,300 miles unless the bike was raced 1/4 mile at a time during those miles. The clutch pack preload probably needs to be adjusted - follow the procedure outlined in the service manual (just a cable adjustment won't do it). You can easily do this by yourself if you know the procedure.

$300 for a clutch replacement is a fair price?

Check with your insurance company about insuring a salvage titled bike. Could be very expensive.

Given the stated condition of the bike, I think it would be worthwhile to have a professional mechanic give the bike a thorough inspection BEFORE purchase.

All that said, I'd pass of this "deal."

Check into your ability to re-title the bike for street use. In Florida, if the bike has a salvage title, it can't be re-titled again. It might make a good track bike, assuming the problem is only the clutch.

$4300 sounds real high. Chances are the thieves did wheelies and burnouts all night long and seriously busted something. It could be very expensive if you don't have the ability to fix it yourself. For $4300 you can probably pick up a decent used 04 that's been treated better. In Georgia you can title a salvage vehicle, you just can't insure it with anything but liability.

I'm with Roadrailer. Get the bike inspected from top to bottom BEFORE you buy the bike. Personally, I think I would keep shopping.

$4300 too much for salvage title bike with issues, $2500 would make me look at it though.

Thanks so much for all of your input... it all has been very much appreciated. I guess I'll continue shopping around. I think I could sleep a lot easier at night knowing what my bike has gone through rather than having to guess.

The most worrisome part to me is the 0-50 in 10 seconds.... holy CRAP somethin's seriously not right there! That's econobox speed, or worse! That bike should be able to rip your arms off without meaning to. It's seriously FUBAR'd... keep walkin'.
