Interesting sentiments except the author is unknown. Many things have appeared on the net supposedly written by Andy Rooney.

If you'd ever read anything by Andy Rooney, you'd recognize his style of writing, there's nothing similar here.

http://www.snopes.com/politics/soapbox/rooney4.asp

Just another urban legend.

Andy himself has said that if he could find the author, he'd sue him.

There's much more stuff circulating on the net that is misattributed to Andy Rooney.

Darned near everything you read like this just smells like an urban legend or internet rumor - Snopes.com is a valuable resource to help check this stuff out.

I don't care who wrote it, I agree with it.

Thanks Steve! Hey, did you try to cut and paste text from that Snopes page? They have somehow blocked that feature from use on their pages. Easy enough to defeat; do a "File" - "Save as" with "Save as type" set to "text file." Defeating that little ploy, I feel like a devious hacker. Am I a bad man or what? lol.

Andy Rooney is for sure a staunch liberal who would never ever make such statements.

quote:

About a year ago, I became aware of a more serious theft of my name and it is so hurtful to my reputation that it calls for legal action against the thief. Hundreds of people have written asking if I really wrote the 20 detestable remarks made under my name that have had such wide circulation on the Internet.

Some of the remarks, which I will not repeat here, are viciously racist and the spirit of the whole thing is nasty, mean and totally inconsistent with my philosophy of life. It is apparent that the list of comments has been read by hundreds of thousands of Americans, many of whom must believe that it accurately represents opinions of mine that I don't dare express in my column or on television. It is seriously damaging to my reputation.

Andy Rooney - 2003

Now for the fun stuff. I agree that some of the statements are misguided. For instance, there is no serious need, no serious impetus for any kind of caucasion specific media or organizations in America. Caucasions were not the group who endured kidnappings, brutal enslavement, persecution, oppression, rampant discrimination, and overt acts of racial hatred.

Divisive politics, no matter the source is rarely a good policy. Better would be for us white folk to unite with all thoughtful Americans in opposition to racism and divisiveness.

When we can each honestly answer the following question with an "it makes no difference", we may with good conscience rest easy; ntil then, I support reasonable efforts to get there. Here's the question:

If you could choose, would you prefer to be caucasion or negro?

I'm caucasian (for MikeyP in case he forgot :joker: ); if given the choice there is no way that I would freely choose at this point in America to be negro in America. We've come a long long wonderful way since 1863 and earlier, but we have yet to attain "the dream" of M.L.K. Jr. We're getting close though. I think that one or two more generations will hopefully do it. I agree that Jesse Jackson and other racially divisive types no matter their race are not helping.

Any minority race BadWeBrs care to comment?

Blake - I did indeed try copying/pasting. That ability IS blocked at Snopes.

I thought it was just me.

Even if the sentiment is good in my/your/our opinion, it carries much more weight IF proper attribution is made.

Believe me, I'm not taking issue with specific points - just the mis-applied use of a LIBERAL commentator (Andy Rooney) to make a very conservative point.

True, I don't believe we need caucasion specific programming. Along those same lines, why do we need any race specific programming? I guess because it's a free market and the media will provide what the public will buy (watch.)

That comment and the tolerance comment are the only ones I really take issue with. Otherwise I think it's on the mark.

Also true about authorship. I agree it is wrong to attribute statements to someone who would so obviously not agree. This is rampant on the internet. I think from now on I'll stick to motorcycle talk...

My litmous test to see if something is racist...interchange some words:

Latino Pride
White Pride
Black Pride

Only one of the above statements would be considered racist. That of course. is discrimination based on the skin color of the person making the statement. IMHO, what is wrong for one color, is wrong for all colors. Perpetuating discrimination in any form is wrong.

In 1860, .014% of the population owned slaves. The average white American is much more likely to be descended from non-slave owner than a slave owner.

It seems the country and the world has forgiven Germans for the actions of the grandfathers a mere 60 years ago, yet white folks are asked to keep paying for the sins of the ancestors more than 200 years ago.

Wow, this topic is quickly going racial... I was more focused on the anti-political correctness of the list.

All I can give as food for thought is this, When you are a minority in todays America you are reminded of the fact from the moment you wake o the moment you sleep (you hope). You may not be the the victim of Persecution/ slander or bigotry but you know, as you walk into that store, are seated in that dining room, apply for that job, make the awkward overture at a social function that you are different and no matter how wise you are, intelligent you may be to know otherwise, it is a dirty feeling that you would not wish on anybody. As for the faux Rooney quotes above some have the ring of truth, others are comical in a sad way and the rest are just non factual nonsense. Now let's all go over to the food channel so we can do what we Americans do best.... Become OBESE!!!!

I always seem to agree with Andy Rooney.
When this was e-mailed to me, it didn't seem like the Andy Rooney I know.
I am happy to hear that you all agree with me that this was not authored by him.

Thanks Greenlantern for weighing in.

Chainsaw,

Is it really valid to tie all the world's racism issues only to slave ownership? Racism is so much incredibly broader than that, and a hideous evil thing it is.

I don't buy that 0.014% slave owner figure. That equates to only around 5,000 or so slave owners out of a total white/free population of around 36 million. If I recall correctly, in 1861 there were around 4 million black slaves in America. If there were only 5,000 slave owners, they would each have had to own 800 slaves each. Be careful where you get your facts on such matters. There are some very dishonest folks out there peddling their own version of history, it's the kind of history with which Hitler would be comfortable, if you get my drift.

I ask again, if you had the choice, would you choose to be black in America today?

Did you see the news yesterday about the old WWI veteran who just passed away. He was 116 years old, one of the last of the very few surviving veterans of WWI.

Now keep in mind he just died last week.

Both of his parents were slaves.

This is not ancient history we're talking about here...
