Eboos sez:

"You know, education, if you make the most of it, you study hard, you do your homework and you make an effort to be smart, you can do well. If you don't, you get stuck in Iraq."

John Kerry made an effort at using satire with similar results.

John Kerry and I are amateurs at using satire...lets bring in a heavy hitter:

President George W. Bush:

"My fellow Americans, major combat operations in Iraq have ended...in the battle of Iraq the United States and our allies have prevailed." May 1, 2003

Now that guy is a pro.

Wolfie sez:

"..and if they called me back, I would go in a heart beat...." Why wait on them to call you....

Because I am now a disgusting fat body!!!"

Too much information! Choices, choices. Call that sacrifice? Then you couldn't very well respond to that call now, could you? Anyway, that is irrelevant to this issue.

Your photo is touching but irrelevant to the discussion in this thread...you are on some wild tangent. You guys are the ones wanting to get all sentimental about "serving" in general, and I am holding down a central argument...about the immorality of sending this high school dropout kid I know, with few employment opportunites, into a senseless civil war that we have no intention of winning, to be used as IED fodder for lunatic Islamos.

Oldie sez:

".....you wrongly intertwine the duty of serving your country unselfishly with some political decision to go to war with Iraq or anyone else.......I never said I agreed with the decision to go to war with Iraq. This is about being a servant of this great country of OURS, not about some pols choice of whether we should invade yet another country. The picture above actually brings a tear to my eyes, literally, and says more than I could ever, ever say about Duty, Honor, and serving OUR country......tell those two they are uneducated trash that deserve being in a warzone....I dare ya.....

Go back and read your 9:54 AM post, Oldie...you are the one trying to intertwine all of this into a sentimental rant about your glory days in "****holes". If you haven't served on the front in Iraq, you don't know any more than anybody else about what is going on over there, right now. Besides, don't try and put words in my mouth, when you can't even remember what you wrote this morning. My issue has nothing to do with me telling those two souls in the photo anything...those are your issues, which do not seem to end there.

Davefl sez: Jim, I for one do not agree with you or John Kerry on this one.. No one is forcing this kid to join. If he has ever watched the news he knows what he is getting into. There are many people in the military who are there because they want to be there. When I signed up I knew that I could go into combat and might not come home, that is what the Army does and has always done. There is no draft and if you do not want to join don't."

I agree with most of your post, except for this kid knowing what he is getting into. He doesn't, he is 18 years young. Joining the Marines is not something you do to grow up to be a man...that is what the ARMY is for. You need to grow up to be a man and THEN join the Marines. This kid has a life of working in fast food to look forward to here. He thinks the worst part of joining the marines is going to be bootcamp. That is why his girlfriend has paid for his one month gym membership so that he can get into shape. Even though I am working with him every night, it ain't going to happen in such a short time, but I am not telling him that. I am trying to build up his confidence, not tear it down, as he is already committed on paper, and will be leaving in less that 30 days. But that is not my point.

Forget any preconceived notions about who said it, and tell me what part of this statement is incorrect:

"You know, education, if you make the most of it, you study hard, you do your homework and you make an effort to be smart, you can do well. If you don't, you get stuck in Iraq."

It sounds like pretty good advice for many poor slackers out there, who think that they are too smart for school. They think that going to Iraq will be like playing a video game.

If you haven't served on the front in Iraq, you don't know any more than anybody else about what is going on over there, right now

What would you like to know?

It's not about agreeing with politics, it's about preserving our way of life.

Edited.... for B D.

What about our invasion of Iraq and the subsequent civil war that we started have anything to do with "defending our way of life"? Nothing...it is an illusion. You brouhaha guys can believe in this illusion if you want, but there are plenty of conservatives who know better, and are saying so...'splain that. As the "liberal" John McCain said, "...it is immoral to keep asking the same number of troops to risk life and limb so that we might delay our defeat for a few months or a year."

Would you rather we fight the war on our soil, with rounds coming through your front door?

Would you rather it be YOUR FAMILY dying in the streets?

We might be delaying the fact that this will soon come to our land, but we are also trying to prevent it.

Since Blake seems to have a day off-
Don't come preach to us about fighting wars and politics when it's your family being slaughtered to instill fear into society, while you are huddling under your desk praying to John Kerry

I agree with most of your post, except for this kid knowing what he is getting into. He doesn't, he is 18 years young.
Ask the "kid" if he considers himself an adult. HE DAMN WELL KNOWS WHAT IS GOING ON, THE NEWS IS ON THE RADIO, THE INTERNET AND THE TELEVISION - TELL ME THE "KID" IS THAT DEPRIVED

Why should my naive young friend sacrifice himself
Friend? You consider him a friend, have you spoken to him about your feelings/opinions? I'm man enough to tell my friends my thoughts/opinions.
You seem to be making him out to be lousy at life, and a waste - not vary much like friends should be treating one another.

WE ARE THERE, NOT HERE be thankful for that - it's the military that keeps the demons as bay

Pwnzor "You could die tomorrow. Go to Australia. Enjoy yourself while you can, this could just as easily be a sign for you to make a big change in your life.

Jump on it.

Watch out for stingrays."

Haha - yeah come on down - its our summer now, fine hot days, zero rain. If you visit my area near the Gold Coast you can jump on a motorbike and be in the mountians in 30 minutes riding some great roads (see my blog http://motorcycleparadise.blogspot.com for some details) then be back to the beach by the afternoon for a swim or a cold beer while watching the passing sights Or perhaps come tour our East coast and New Zealand South Island by motorbike - its easy, safe and affordable - just stay away from some of the wildlife ok

} Joining the Marines is not something you do to grow up to be a man...}

???? Thats one of many reasons to join...He will be fine...3 to 4 months in bootcamp, 2 months at AIT, and then depending on what his MOS will be, it could be a year before he gets to the fleet....}

Damnut, I'm very happy that you still have your job. I'm also sorry your thread got jacked -- partly my fault and I'm going to fix it at the end of this one.

Jimidan, You're off the beaten path of reality. I'd be more than happy to carry on a very civil conversation/email exchange/pm's with you about this very thing -- it won't get resolved in this format. I do not appreciate your response to Odie. A retired United States Army helicopter pilot, warrant officer, needs no other bona fidas. Them cats are as real as they get and will fly through the gates of hell to assist war fighters on the ground -- we can discuss that too, but not in this forum.

Kyle, I can't get through all this crap. Calling Blake out for a day off/day away is wrong. This isn't his profession and he's a most diligent owner operator of a great site. At the same time I like your attitude young warrior -- keep it, use it, it may well save your life one day.

Odie, I wish I'd of seen this earlier and I'd of squashed it. I was out celebrating my 25th anniversary with my hottie -- and we had a wonderful time too. The 'kids' did a great job of putting on a great big shindig for us. I'll get some pics up sometime.

Damnut's still employed and that's a good thing. Since the initial thought was he may be looking at some unemployment/travel opportunities and they didn't come about consider this thread closed.

This thread's done.

BigDaddy out,,,,,,pay off for the pearl jewelery is near : )
