I am thinking of moving to North Carolina and would like to hear from people where the best place is. Was thinking about 20-30 miles from the coast? Good homes, schools, jobs? Thanks for any knowledge you have.

Head over to Carolina Corner Carvers and post the same ?
We have people all across the state. As for me, I live in central NC and like it because I am within 2-3 hrs of EVERYTHING,but most things are 1/2 hour. Course some may look at that as bad, but......

V8basil - depends on what you're looking for. School for yourself or children? What type of job market?

We are just outside of Greenville NC, about 1 1/2 hours from the coast. We are 20 minutes from East Carolina University which has a great medical, art, teaching school among other programs. Housing is growing like crazy. You can get more house for your money if you move just outside of Greenville/Winterville area.

There is decent shopping, restaurants and night life. If I want to do a day of major shopping, I usually drive to Raleigh, about 70 miles west of here.

Wilmington and Jacksonville are closer to the coast. Wilmington has UNC Wilmington campus. Good shopping and restaurants and night life. Oldog and Cyclone on Carolina Corner Carvers can offer more information about Wilmington and Southern Marine can tell you more about Jacksonville.

We moved here from Cincinnati 14 years ago. We lived in Cincinnati proper and prior to that busy suburbs just north of the city limits. We now live in a 1 stop light town. The speed of things is very different, as is the availability of things that we were used to. Like every place you live, there are pros and cons versus some other place.

We no longer worry about the entire long, cold snowy winters. If it snows (usually dustings) around here, everything closes. Good luck getting milk or bread at the grocery! We do have nasty ice storms more than snow. Of course, right now we're in the middle of hurricane season. We're far enough inland we usually don't take the brunt of the storm, but we're not out of harms way.

As U4euh said, come over to Carolina Corner Carvers and you may find more information about different areas.

Kristi

V8basil,

I just helped my son move to Boston for college. I'm in Charlotte and as others have said it's 2-3 hours to the mountains or the beach. Lots of technology jobs in the Raleigh and Charlotte areas and lots of different kinds of manufacturing industries throughout the state.

I never knew anyone who moved that way before: just picked a state and then started snooping around. I'd suggest gettin't some sand in your shoes and salt in your hair. But I'd say the same for FL, GA, SC, NC, VA, MD... (But when we got to NJ, I'd just cough once and ask ya what's wrong with Boston?)

i loved it when i lived there from 1993-1996 (for college). its beautiful, affordable, and gracious. and no matter where you are in the state of NC - you're 2 hours or less from either mountains or beach.

lots of pharma and tech jobs there.

great airport that is a hub for AA so lots of direct flights.

for road trips/weekend trips - atlanta, hilton head, myrtle beach, richmond, philadelphia, dewey beach, baltimore, NYC are all very reasonable distances away!

i'd live there again given the right opportunity : )

(just for you C3 folks, GO DUKE!)

Hello everyone
Thanks for your answers, keep them coming! The more I know the better. I am hopefully spending a week down there next month, where should I spend my time? I also posted in the Carolina corner. I am looking to buy a new home and have a longer summer and shorter winter, less taxes and living cost! But mostly just better weather! Thanks again!

When you come next month, what area are you heading towards? Coastal, central or western? Like Buellgirlie said, you can get the mountains or beach in a reasonable amount of time. The determining factor will be your occupation and "speed of life" you're looking for.

Taxes - NC will tax you on everything, including your light bill, cell bill, groceries, etc. If you live in the city limits, you will pay county tax and city tax on your house. If you live outside the city limits, only county taxes to be paid.

Housing - depends on what area of NC you're looking at. I'm sure it's less than Boston, but there are probably areas that could compete as well.

Weather - winters are not bad, but summers are hot and humid. If you have seasonal allergies, get ready for NC pollen and ragweed season.

Riding season - my husband rides pretty much year round. After hitting black ice last November, he no longer rides when the temps fall below freezing over night. Otherwise, he's in his First Gear textile 3/4 jacket and overpants.

Just for Dora - LOL (go Tarheels!)

Western North Carolina.

V8,
Unless you are a Marine, opening a tattoo shop, or check cashing joint I would stay clear of Jacksonville. It is a fun place to visit but as far as a place to live it is prototype Military Town. I loved living in Top Sail beach and the Wilmington area.

Now before any Marines start to b!tch, I am a Marine and lived there for 2 1/2 yrs. There are much better places to settle down in NC.

I was stationed in Jacksonville while in the Corp. Most marines aren't fond of it either.

Couple links that might be interesting:
http://www.city-data.com/city/North-Carolina.html
http://www.city-data.com/forum/north-carolina/
http://www.weather.com/

The city-data site has a tremendous amount of general information about NC cities such as population, economy, climate, etc. The city-data forums seems to be a little disorganized, but you can find opinions on specific cities if you use the search function. Weather.com will let you look at annual averages by month for temperature and precipitation. You can even compare the climates of two different cities side by side.

I've lived in the 'greater' Raleigh area for most of my life, but I'm less qualified to speak about the coastal areas. It's been my experience that the coastal areas get warmer winters than the central NC cities, but the summer temperatures are about the same. Going further West the winters start to get colder, but you have to go to the mountains and see a change in elevation before the summers start to get any cooler. In general I'd say the Eastern NC cities get better weather (assuming you want to avoid the cold) while the Western NC cities get better riding due to the roads and such.

Buellgirlie,

I went to DUKE also. Yeah go Blue Devils. I was there when they still had open kegs on the quad.

Moving to NC can never be a mistake, you have the ability to ride year round if you want and the beach and the mountains.

I look at jobs there on a regular basis and want to move back there in the next year or two.

Check out Research Triangle Park area... between Raleigh Durham and Chapel Hill.

Yay

Char - i was a freshman the last year of open kegs on campus. fall of 1993 was still kegs on east fridays and kegs on west saturdays. by the time i graduated in 1996 - it was restricted to university trained bartenders that were personally liable........eeeek!

what are the chances of 2 buell owning duke girls living in WI? we have to meet!
