Castor----If it is good enough for John Force and his push rod motors it is good enough for me.

Okay, here's my stance on the issue. And my beliefs are sincere enough that I'm not going to argue about it.

The MoCo's stance on synthetic oils in the past, and the change in their stance after they got a H-D branded synthetic(?) of their own to sell, was disingenuous at best.

And their refusal to provide basic specifications about application and service grades for the oils they do sell is nothing short of vacuous merchandising.

So I have two choices:

1 - Drive 45 miles to the dealer and fall into line with all the other loyal lemmings unquestioning buyers and buy whatever the MoCo says I need.

2 - Apply my personal intelligence to things like the API specifications, service grades, laboratory testing results, personal knowledge of the motors, what parts are involved with a given lubricant, performance histories of lubricants, etc., and pick a lubricant that works for me.

So far my choice has been the second one and I feel good about the results.

Jack

"What are you arguing anymore? That the majority of HD products are expensive? Or just anything anymore? Just settle with the fact that the manual and obviously someone with higher input than you deems it fit for use in the Buells, more so than other oils"

well, I am not arguing. I have simply stated some facts and my interpretation. I have steadfastly maintained that you should use whatever oil you want.

I did not state anything about the price of other HD products, just their oil.

Why are you so defensive about what oil you use? Use it and move on.

"WTF is the point of this lame argument. May as well be trying to convert people's religions"

I am not trying to convert anyone to anything. If fact, I don't want a run on Red Line, they will raise the price.

Hey, if folks want to pay $9 a qt for CITGO oil, more power to them.

Different strokes.

I do love the "if HD says so" line though.

Nicely said, Jack!

Imagine, having to think for ourselves!

Also what is interesting to me is to whether ANYONE else tries to get away with this approach.

In other words, sell an oil with their name on it which they do not make; do NOT provide API designations or other product info; charge a world class price!

Candidly, I do admire HD as a company and honestly admire them for getting away with this approach.

Cool!

I like the Syn3 in my primary. Is it the best? I don't know. ( doubt it, but it smells better than Mobile 1 Gear goo ) Do I have a million miles on it? Not yet. I'm hoping it won't eat the glue that holds my stator together, ( Is that the problem with "other" stuff?, I'm still reading. )
It has improved shifting. ( so, I'll bet will many other goo's )

I run Mobile 1, Castrol Syntec, or Amsoil in the engine, depending on what's on sale, or where I buy it. All good synthetic oils seem fair game to me. I've even run Syn3, it was fine.

Not to 'dis' anyone's oil religion.

Brucelee, I've tried being reasonable with you, but now unfortunately I'll just have to completely ignore you from here on out. It's easy enough to do, since you add little to any conversation besides to contradict without substantiation.

Good bye, and good luck. You'll need it.

For the rest of you, I'm sure you understand that I was merely saying the oil I use is good. I don't know that it's the best oil, I just know for a fact that it works well under normal conditions. I'm not a racer, and I don't abuse my bike at all so perhaps there is a better oil for those who ride harder or whatever.

Syn-3 is good. Maybe it's the best, how could I know? I haven't lived long enough to try every single oil on the market.

That's just honesty, given in response to a direct request from Vividlucidity, who SPECIFICALLY asked if anyone was using SYN-3 in the primary.

The answer, once again, is yes, I do. And I like it. So there.

I'll say again, use what you like. Got professional advice to use something else, go right ahead, it's your money and your bike.

See you at the 1 million mile mark.

So I'm a suicidal arctic gerbil? And so is everyone else using Syn-3? Call yourself all the names you want, but leave us out of it.

I get my oil changed at the dealer, so as to be sure of no warranty problems. Syn-3.
I buy Mobil 1 (15w50) to top up.
So far no problems, and I don't expect any.

Alas, I try to avoid them whenever possible.

Right, this is the wrong sport for the "money minded", if I was worried about spending too much money I'd play Table Tennis.

Why are you so defensive about what oil you use? Use it and move on.
Because Badwebbers (myself included) were stating what type of oil they use and you proceeded to downplay our choices. I wasn't disturbed that you use RedLine.. but obviously there is a problem with our using our preferred oils. Look in the archives, this debate has been staged before...

Edit : I believe everyone has taken into consideration their riding conditions when choosing oil. Mine meets my needs and requirements.

Actually you are the one using the oil with no substantiation. You simply cannot logically get that. No ratings, no data, simply faith in the mothership.

That is fine, it is your money. As I have said numerous times, use what you want. I am fine about it.

Use whatever oil you want. If you WANT to believe it is a fine oil, who am I to try to stop you?

Meanwhile back here in the real world ......

didn't mean to start a war , but the info and debate is interesting. like pwnzor said, i just wondered if anyone was using it in the primary and what their experience or thoughts on it were. i'll try not to ask too many more sensitive questions

Imagine that. Glad to help out, Richard.

Don't worry about that other stuff, it happens. Some people just have to contradict or they don't feel whole.

Cheers!

No issue, you did not start a war, simply asked a question.

I was not arguing, simply providing information, all of which I stand by.

Facts are facts.

I don't wear HD branded underwear when riding my Buell, I'm perfectly happy with the DIM & Athena brands I usually wear & have ridden thousands of miles in.

Does this mean I have invalidated my warranty?

I think we should be told what go's into HD underwear!

On second thoughts I don't really want to know, TMI.
