My 2000 X1 ignition is getting VERY particular. it's hard to find the spot where the light come on and it will crank. Once it's running it stays on going down the road but I am worried that soon it will die on me in traffic.

the switch must be worn out or full of crap, is my only avenue replacement?

This happened to me as well. Replace the switch, but rewire the ignition so the switch operates a relay. That way, the current that energizes the starter solenoid goes through the relay instead of the ignition switch. The tiny little contacts in the switch will thank you.
