the squabble came about when a GERMAN emigre started a brewery in America, and shoplifted the }German name for budvar: 'budweiser'.
his copyrighting of the name, here in America, kept the real stuff rom distribution, here.
now it's distributed under the name 'czechvar'....a little overpasteurized for export, but still excellent fare.
the simple fact that anheuser-busch now owns rolling rock, and will be closing down the old latrobe brewery in favour of brewing the 'name' back at the dark star...er.....home plant, sickens me.
i think the great commonwealth should secede from the republic and refuse to let rolling rock go....
what's next-
amish software techs?

" 'There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely games.'

Ernest Hemingway"

I've always had an issue with this quote.
Hemingway was a rabid downhill skier...he taught in The Alps, and he was a large part of Averill Harriman's conception for Sun Valley. He referred to skiing as a sport constantly....
His taste for pugilism is famous- he referred to boxing as a sport on innumerable occasions, as well.
then again, drinking was a competitive sport w/papa, so who knows....

Football is good, I don't know how anyone that enjoys human competition can sit and watch a soccer game, following the play a little, without understanding what is going on and not "getting into it" a little.

Because it is soooooo slow paced, low-scoring, and just plain dull.

I am not a fan of any team sport or activity. I have some interest in boxing, because my son is into it. I have a lot of interest in Tae Kwon Do, because I've done it since I was a kid. But I don't watch either of them on TV. Pay-per-view boxing for my son and his friends when they earn it.

My TV is for movies, cartoons and whatever I record on the DVR ahead of time.

I support everyone's right to be a sports fan. I also support your rights to drink alcohol, smoke cigarettes, own guns and drive too fast. Now if we could just get a drinkin-smokin-shootin-demolition derby going...

I'll change that if I'm within the time allowance.

To anybody that was offended by the word "Kraut", please refer to me as either "Cracker" or "Honkey" from here on out.

I don't believe the politically correct alert alarms at that level

I’m no more offended than you by the term kraut because I’m as southern redneck American as they come.

However, I know the term is degrading and insulting to some Germans. I mention it when someone uses the term, because of my mom who was German. She was German and lived there in her younger years during WWII.

She married an American, moved to the States when she could speak very little English, and learned to read, write, and speak English. Had 5 children who are American citizens, became a citizen herself.

She worked her entire life, putting in her dues into the system, retirement etc. and died at the age of 62 still employed without ever drawing a dime of retirement, un-employment etc. And now her five children of German descent are contributing positively as well !!

She loved the States and all it stood for and did her best her entire life to become Americanized, the term was very insulting to her !!

So you just be as glib as you want about the term, but out of respect for my mom I will always try to mention that it may be as offensive to some Germans as it was to my mom !!

Tramp knew what I was getting at (we've done this before) and that I wasn't offended by his comments !!

For some reason when he remembered and was respectful and your comment more or less said "big freaking deal", I was annoyed !!

So how about you just bite me !!

I don't believe the politically correct alert alarms at that level either does it !!??

I think big daddy was just trying to defuse the social ordnance before it became
blown outta proportion.

Thank you both- incidentally, I'm sure big daddy has at least as many german grandparents as cj or me.... he certainly didn't mean no foul by bringing levity in.
we're all in this thing together, and i'm the last one who can throw stones regarding
being passionate about something like that.

CJ,

My bad -- sorry.

Tramp, Unfortunately I lost my last German grandparent when my grandmother passed in 1990. My grandfather died in the last days of the war. I was born near Mannheim, proud product of a NC mountain man and a local war orphan (my mom.)

I remember, vividly in fact, the names I was called by the American kids, the German kids, and their parents.

There was no harm intended by my post.

Well I wonder what the Japs think of all this?

That reminds me of a story. As a poor Japanese boy growing up in the streets of Nagasaki, my mamma-san would often say to me:

Banzai!!!!!

Just kidding. I am neither Japanese nor an expatriate of Japan. I would like to add that while many of my best friends are not Japanese, I hold these people in high regard. In fact I just bought a Nissan Murano for my wife.

I rebuke the American makers for their previous transgressions against my family budget with this non-American purchase....I rebuke them!!

Some of my best friends are German.

Well, not really. I am English, Danish and Pakistani. Yeah, that's right...Pakistani. My Indian friends (some of my best friends really are Indian) say that I am Indian, not Paki because of when my DNA contributer was born in that land, it was only India.

Anyway, born in Castro Valley, USA. We're all Americans and we are all brothers...except for CJxb...she's a sister. And as my sister, CJxb I am giving you five minutes to:

1. Clean my room.
2. Do my chores.
3. Change the oil in my bike.

Or I will throw your doll on the roof.

Back to the thread topic of World Cup soccer:
Because it is soooooo slow paced, low-scoring, and just plain dull.
Today's snoozer between Switzerland and Ukraine certainly fits that description.

But NO WAY that works for Argentina, Brazil, or Germany in this tournament. Heck, Ghana just might out-quick and out-score Brazil Tuesday.

For me, a red-blooded American boy who grew up playing baseball and basketball, I really like watching the "world's game" and the different styles the countries bring to the largest tournament on Earth.

Oh, I'm still bummed how the Aussies bowed out today. Disgraceful acting by the Italians...

Nothing like a numb Beck's fog, "Tuesday's Gone" on the jukebox, and some random bar broad buying.

Now that's a philosophy I can relate to!

The international level game is different, but if you're a fan it's still good. I prefer a Schalke 04 victory in Bundesliga,,,,long suffering fan:

"Blau und Weiss, wie lieb ich Dich
Blau und Weiss, verlass mich nicht
Blau und Weiss ist ja der Himmel nur
Blau und Weiss ist unsere Fussballgarnitur "

,,,and maybe Asamoah will score?

I got Boog for personal security now (just doesn't work with his mom?)
