Hey kids,

I'm new to the Buell business. I actually sell them, but specifically I'm looking for things to mention to my customers who want to put aftermarket accessories on their bikes. Any suggestions would be great!

Welcone to badweb.

First thing I'd do is visit our sponsor's web sites. That will keep you busy for a while : )

Then the Knowledge Vault (commonly called the KV) has a wealth of owner modifications that will boggle your mind.

Yeah I've spent hours on the buell website, and I can talk about those for quite a while. I appreciate your help, and I think that you should know that the honda that was in my previous pic wasn't mine, merely the bike I learned how to ride on. Hopefully the pic now is satisfactory. Thanks for your help!

Sheesh I was just kidding. All bikes are awesome no matter what you ride. The fact is your on two wheels is what matters. Brian pointed you best. Check out the sponsors web sights and see for your self. Also look at peoples profiles. They usually say in them what they have changed on there scoots. PM them a question or two about what they have done. Most are more then happy to answer and BadWeb encourages questions.

Rider's Edge, MSF (Basic, Advanced), classrides.com, superbikeschool.com, BattleTrax...

Second best accessory - Gear.
Shoei, Arai, Sidi, Held, Joe Rocket, First Gear, Aerostitch, hein gericke,

Third: heat

Ride right, ride safe, ride as often as possible.

Rachel,

The main thing that you can do is to pay attention to your customers! I was down there last spring for my daughter's graduation from ISU. I wanted to test ride one of the XB's with interest in the CityX. I had to almost drag one of the salesmen out to help me out. The young Buell guy acted like he could care less.
To make a long story short I was offered a chance to buy a Vrod with no effort to sell me a Buell which I was interested in. I bought an ST1300 3 weeks later.

Set-up! Set-up! Set-up!

Ask the customer what he/she weighs and make sure the suspension is set for him/her before they ride it home.

Bike - Buell Frame Pucks & Dark HorseMoto axle sliders.

Rider - Helmet, Armored jacket, & gloves.

Just a question. From your user name, are you Turkish? I had the pleasure of living in Istanbul for about a year and a half (Terabia was the neighborhood, I'm not sure if I spelled it right). I worked at the American Consulate.

For those that are wondering, Marhaba means hello in Turkish.

Marhaba is hello or welcome in Arabic..period..

As-Salaam-Alaikum - it would be nice if we could use this typical islamic/arabic greeting with each other every day --- and mean it... "Peace be unto you"

Wa Alaikum Salaam!

It's so much nicer to say that than the phrases I was originally taught, like "Qif! te rah Armeek!"

I think your question is a tad broad.

If you ask more specific questions about a certain modification you will have a much greater response, and get more accomplished, I think.

um... i only posted a general question to spark some discussion. I wasn't expecting "discussion" to range anywhere from "Are you Turkish?" to "Do you have any tee shirts?" (by the way Duff, no i don't, I don't sell clothes, I sell bikes only) to the german and french discussion going on as well. I' not turkish, and Angelwild was right. Marhaba is hello in Modern Standard Arabic, I'm glad that you picked up on that. So far, all suggestions have been great, and thank you to midknyte for the note about the suspension!

Welcome to the madness! "Marhaba" Rachel

May I suggest a rollmodel(?) Daves over at appleton, you will see his name ( and enthusiasm all over the place here )
That enthusiasm(?) is infectious!
It makes Dave S and others like him a pleasure to deal with,

by the way Duff, no i don't, I don't sell clothes, I sell bikes only)

Daves sold me my rain gear and a couple of small items IIRC ~$150.00

In reality you sell any thing that the customer wants
[in the way of merchandise NO comments at the LADYS EXPENSE PLEASE]

My sales rep helped me with my jacket, helmet and My bike, at the time of purchase.

an Oldogs thoughts if your interested..

Your desire to "study up" on things buellish can serve you well, here more is better.

Consider that repeat buyers and seasoned riders will respect you for your knowledge especialy if it goes beyond the spec sheet,

Most of us also to some degree will catch some one trying to be knowledgable when they are not.

You can be in a unique position, Riding, being knoweledgeable and Female will tend to fascenate your prospective customers (largely male) and help to keep them talking to you, Few females are technicaly knowledgable about these bikes ( I don't mean to sound sexist here)
I suspect that any women that are prospects will take your advice quicker than a mans because they can relate to you

Also as above the bit about listen to your customers

Ride safe on your blast, AND Best of luck to you on your new "Career" or peraps "Adventure" is the correct term, }

I hope that you have not taken any offense to my remarks as I mean for them to be helpfull

What is the modern arabic for Good Bye..

From the porch Oldog....

Tramp,--I get the "I speak French," but Aussie, also(sorry, could not resist the double entendre)Pretty linguistic!! Had those French speaking catholic nuns as teachers for years. And could not guess at "tramenoise."
"Aussi=also".Monsieur Le Tramp.

And a big welcome to the club for Rachel!!Wish you luck in your selling.Study up on the guys who are good at selling Buells here to see what sells to Buell types.

+1 to what Iamike said.

If a customer comes in not looking like the typical Harley owner, introduce them to Buell.

I had an interesting time buying my Buell, I look young and the first two dealers didn't seem interested in selling me a buell.

Third dealer (Downtown HD) pegged me as a Buell rider the moment I walked in the door. They have made plenty off me since...

Marhaba,

Suggestions for helping with your bike purchasers..

Bike Safety:
1. Frame Pucks - these are an absolute MUST. If you're really kind you'll throw them in, they come stock on some bikes now. There is no better protection for such little money for the fuel filled frame.
2. Axle sliders - darkhorse moto has great ones, they protect the axles in a slide, they too are extremely useful. There are other brands out there, but many people here have darkhorse because they sell rear sliders that allow you to prop them up on a stand.
3. Stronger footpegs - Buell carries billet traction pegs and they work well, there are several aftermarket pegs that are nice also. The stock pegs are brittle and will definitely break off from a simple tip-over. (make sure your parts department carries spare pegs, and brake and clutch levers, they too break off very easily in a tip-over and your customers will be happy they don't have to wait for those items to be ordered)
3.5. - Bar-end sliders, may prevent lever breakage and other damage...but they can't be fitted on bikes with hand covers, like the city-cross and Ulysses

Rider comfort -
1. Hand grips - Buell makes very comfy traction grips, they reduce the vibrations and are more barrel shaped than stock, providing less hand fatigue. Of course, there are other grips people might like.
2. Seats, there are lower seats for shorter riders, Buell makes many, Corbin also makes Buell seats..
3. If you have tall riders buying a firebolt, and they feel cramped in the legs, you might suggest lightening pegs, which have about a 1-inch drop, go look at them, you'll understand what I'm talking about. The reverse also applies, firebolt pegs are good for some riders on the lightnings. The traction pegs do not have the drop, so you'll want to note that when suggesting them.
4. Someone suggested suspension set-up, if you're not familiar with how to do this, I suggest asking your Buell tech to show you how it all works. DaveS is an excellent resource, from Appleton Buell, and I believe he has the suspension tweaked for the customer before they leave..I may be wrong on that, but helping them understand how to adjust the forks and rear springs is priceless knowledge and makes a HUGE difference in how their bike will feel and handle.

Performance -
Ok, I'm not even going to pretend to know very much about this part. Since there is no longer an OEM race kit, you will have to just research the board on after market exhausts, if they want something louder than stock. Check out whether they will void their warranty with your dealership, if they installed an after market pipe..
Tires on the 12 models are Dunlops, many people here think they suck... the stocks on the City cross, the pirelli scorpions are wonderful as are many others that people have discussed.

Ok, that's all for now, hope this helps. When you're on the Buell site, if you haven't already, go to "Buell on Buell" and watch those movies...Erik does a magnificent job explaining the finer details of the bike, if I were you I would know all those key points by heart..it helps when you explain with passion, why a Buell is such an amazingly engineered and absolute FUN bike to your customers. Teach them all you can about what is unique and patented on the bike and pass that passion along to them.

Good luck
and don't mind the boys, there is a severe shortage of women here...they're really good dudes!
HUGS
Angela

I also agree, that you can sell more than just the bikes. I have never bought a new bike, 2 reasons..one is, I have never gotten the warm and fuzzy feeling from teh salesperson... the best experience I had, was @ a Ducati dealership, and the WOMAN I dealt with, loved those bikes, more than almost anyone I know, except me : ).... But, she knew all kinds of little details, that surprised me..again, made me feel comfortable..liek i was dealing with someone I would ride with, not just some person trying to either sell a bike or move on to the next sale...

Take your time, have patience.. KNOW about the bikes.. If possible, have your GM let you take each one of those XBs for a ride..not just a short demo ride, but, a nice blast down the higway, thru traffic, something...

write down what YOU liked about the bike, ergo's etc.. and also, what you didnt like..and what you woudl possibly recommend to the customer as far as changes...

Because, if you know the bikes...and they see that, they most likely will come back to you for more stuff(again, you can sell more than just the bikes)...

Other than that, everything has been covered..

Oh yeah, and dont look at us young people as if we are from another planet... especially ones like me...: )

Good Luck..

Chase

first- do you ride one? if not, begin immediately.
if you do, already, then you know what i mean.

secondly: REMOVE ALL MIRRORS AND REAR BRAKES FROM YOUR MAJOR UNITS AT PDI
this is for the safety of your customer base.
Buell Motorcycle Corporation flagrantly installs these unsafe-at-any-speed items with full knowledge of the associated risk to life and limb.
