Too late to go into any details, but we've completed 7 of 16 combinations that we'll get through. We don't have a Force or a Ti-Force as we'd originally thought we would, c'est la vie.

It has been a most challenging day, especially for Terry. The stories will come out later, but suffice to say, he's paid his dues on this test and then some. Blake never made it out of Kilgore, he wrenched his back badly as he was getting ready to leave. But we're doing fine without him.

More to come....

I wouldn't expect anything until tomorrow or wednesday.
They have a lot of data to compile and make sense of.
Not to mention all of the guys involved were on this
for some very long hours all weekend. They need a
little sleep tonight or we'll get some strange results.

Wait until you see the results! These guys busted a nut to get you guys the most comprehensive and FAIR numbers out there.

I only wish they'd used my bike as the 12 test mule!!!

All the runs are in the bag and the winner is......

Sorry, it isn't going to go down like that. I will objectively compile the results and you will decide which pipe is the winner for YOU. But give me some time, it is going to take some work.

I just got into Cedar Rapids after a third day of dyno room fun/hell (it's both). I am permeated with exhaust fumes, my ears are ringing, my head hurts, but it was worth it. Today was for collecting all the data from several computers and cameras, directlink training for the Silver Eagle tech and a directlink remap on Tim's bike. I have over a hundred pictures and close to 200 dyno runs to sort through, some audio files to crunch on, and a bunch of text to write. I'm going to stay up for a while here in the hotel room and get some done, but I am beyond beat right now. I'll work on the airplane tomorrow as well, but it is going to take a while. Joanne had to run American Sport Bike by herself in my absence, so I'm way behind there too. It's going to take some time to get caught up.

A lot of work by a lot of people went into this, and a lot of money was spent by the many sponsors of this test. So the results will be compiled as objectively as possible with all the right credits given. All I can tell you now is that the wait will be worth it.

Al

dang, must have been one hell of a weekend, 200 dyno runs is a bunch! i would guess the end of the week, but if i know Al, this will be extremely detailed and nothing left unsaid, the test result thread should be the sticky of all stickys! that way when some asks " what pipe should i get? " just send them the link.

I had such a great sleep last night. Wow, I haven't slept that hard for a long, long time. That made it all worth it.

It was a great time. I had alot of fun working the dyno (I'm not near as good as that Terry guy). My bike got about 220 miles of hard dyno time, best time of it's life.

And it was great to meet all of you, hope our paths cross again soon.

I made good progress on the airplane ride in compiling the dyno data (ie. selecting which runs have meaning, which ones don't). The real work is in creating the graphics plots from them, though.

In the process, I counted. We did 298 dyno runs on Saturday and Sunday. That doesn't count the bunch we did on Monday training and tuning.

I think it was great for all. I got back last night and almost got caught up at work today.

I did spend some time on the phone with DynoJet Tech Support about how "Friendly" the Silver Eagle H-D Buell Dyno was. We discussed how the calibration was accomplished and what would affect changes in reading over two or three years. When they learned that I had installed Win Pep 7 to replace the older software, I was told that was why the HP and Torque readings were a little high. They assured me that because the entire test was done on the same Dyno over two days with the same operator the test was valid. The upgraded software I installed was calibrated for our Dyno here in Vallejo CA. It seems that the while the Dyno drum mass is very close on all DJ 250's the software is in fact calibrated for each. That is what is needed to measure torque and horsepower to two decimal places. I will post this on the QB as a stand-alone thread, so we don’t get the wrong idea out there that the test data was slued.

To all of you asking who won and what the numbers were, please understand Al has tons of data to sort and I think when we see the results we will be impressed. I need to say that one of the most impressive thing I saw all weekend was Kevin’s XB12 Drummer SS pull from 1500 RPM in 5th gear. I did get him to let me bump the starting point a little bit higher, as I could not get a smooth A/F down that low, but it accelerated all the way to the top. To all you KD Fans I understand why you like this guy. Not only does he bring some of that NC charm and wit, but the product he sells is first class and in this day and age isn’t it great to see such pride in workmanship and customer support. Again Thanks to all who came and played with us and to those great folks at Silver Eagle H-D Buell who let us come to play at their house. … Terry

Terry,
Thanks for the props on the SS, however your dyno skills are no slouch either, you truly hold out till the end.....I've learned alot by being in the same room with all the data we've seen, and I would love to be a part of any other tests in the future....on a side note if you read this Terry, yes I still have your number as well...haha... your a great guy to have around in the Buell market....keep up the good work...want to say Al, I can't wait till you come to NC, you have to look me up, and bring Terry too, you'll want to see what I'm working on now!!!! To all it was a great time!!!!

Blake,
I just sent the distilled winpep data to you in two spreadsheets in one workbook. Each muffler for each bike has a row that contains Peak Torque(ft-lbs), Peak Torque RPM, Peak Power(RWHP), Peak Power RPM for each significant run type for each pipe on each bike, including Stock Map, Race Map, Best Torque, Best Power, Flattest A/F curve, and Acceptance Run. That's 49 runs for the XB9, 49 runs for the XB12. I'll let you figure out what the best presentation format is for that raw data.

I've still got some playing to do to figure out the best way to extract time between trap speeds for each of those runs, given the variability that exists between trap start/stops RPMs on the dyno pulls. I think I have a good way to do it, but it is pretty time consuming to extract the data. I'll add that to the spreadsheet as well. But crunch on the data on the way to you now for a while.

ya was definantly an experiance. i think i got about 4 hours sleep from friday till tuesday, and as you can tell by the post time i havent been making much of it up yet, headed to bed for about 4 hours. need sleep...

i think we did about another hundred miles on monday by my bike od. and the fact that it was almost out of gas, lol. 100 miles in about 8 hours or so of tuning, hmm...

you guys are definantly out of my league when it comes to that stuff though. my brain was on overload! im still processing stuff in my head. wish you guys would have gotten to see the final run i wanted to do on the dyno though....!!! think we might have had to tighten the straps down and pile a few more people on the poor old 9. think we still could have shreaded the back tire!

even though i said it a hundred times while we were all there, THANKS A BUNCH!!!! i wont forget it trust me. and by the way. its running like a raped ape. still havent given it a shot yet though!

Tim,
I'd get that thing on the Zylstra Digital tech and check out the AFV, and then do a couple short AFV-learn rides and test it again. I really would have liked an hour or two more on that bike to say the mapping was "done", but I think we left it in pretty good shape. We started with the XB9 race ECM map that was modified for the optimization of the drummer muffler during the shootout testing, so it should be well in the ballpark. WOT should be about spot on, and I'm comfortable that we had the closed loop domain map pretty well dialed in. The 31%, 39%, and 41% throttle columns could use a bit more refinement, though.

sorry if this is a repeat question Al but... did you guys end up with any baseline maps to reuse for the popular pipes? curious about the pre-mapped ECM situation of the future. maybe that's a question for Kevin too, will Drummer offer mapped ECMs for their pipes? i'm dying to get a hold of one. TFI is screaming for eBay ;)

There aren't any maps coming out of the shootout, at least not directly. We ONLY mapped the WOT column for both the front and rear cylinder for each pipe. We didn't do steady state, decel, or idle tuning. We didn't do much with the accel tables, either, just enough to smooth the WOT fueling curves down low.

I did a map for Tim's XB9 SS drummer on Monday as part of a training exercise for Silver Eagle, but I didn't finish it to my satisfaction. And we were in such a hurry to clear out of the dyno room at the end of the day, I'm not sure I saved it in it's final configuration. I'll need to check the file time to confirm that. But even it I did, I wouldn't consider it sellable in it's present form, and we don't have an SS drummer to put on a 9 to take to to completion.

I have a customers bike for the next few weeks with two Special Opps to do. Al is staying over for two days following SS Bike Races and we will be using his 9 and my 12 to finish everything we can get pipes for. I think Kevin is going to send me the standard Drummers we used during the Shoot out. Following that Al and I will have Micron, Standard Drummer, Jardine, Buell Race, Special Opps, and D&D. I am waiting for my header pipes to return and the Drummers from Kevin, we will do the Drummer SS at soon as we can get one. Anyone have Drummer SS to loan the project, we will get you a custom map if you do, contact Al at American Sport Bike. ... BTW. ... H-D Buell of Vallejo has spun off it's Racing and Performance group, so the sponsorship and BW Banner we were working on for H-D Buell of Vallejo will now be for Vallejo Performance Services or VPS a stand alone company. ... Terry - Google Earth says it's 556 miles from home to Vallejo door-to-door... that's the trip* I'll be making to support VPS via custom Buell tuning! Is tuning service available on a Saturday?

Also, I've got a Drummer SS on order that you & Al can use for tuning.

Yes it is for Buell Direct Link Customers and Special High Performance H-D Customers. ... On Tues thru Thurs I am training my dyno replacement for H-D Buell of Vallejo. ... On Fri, Sat, Sun, and Mon. if needed the dyno us used by VPS for High Performance (Not Street Legal) work. ...

But I looks like Kevin is coming up with a SS as well as Standard Drummers in the next few weeks. ... So when those are done you will be able to send your ECM down to Al and have the MAP loaded. American Sport Bike and VPS are working together on this if, so you can get down here I will do the down load, if not Al will do it via your removed ECM. ... Terry Parsley GM of VPS
