My friend went to SEAL "tryouts" and flunked because of his ears, he couldn't be under water for very long because the pressure on his ears.

Speaking of Wrestling, I tried out for wrestling when I was in school, but had the wrong idea, I showed up for tryouts in a cape and "elf" slippers. Boxing didn't work right either, I was kinda gun shy from having an older brother, every time my sparring partner would hit me, I would tell the referee.

In fighting, one thing I learned early is NOT to try to "headbutt" the other guy, I can't speak for everyone that has tried it, because I haven't done the research and looked at all the log books, but usually what happens is, in my case, you knock yourself out, thereby rendering yourself ineffective for the rest of the fight.

Korea does have a comparable Martial Art that greatly conforms with the Japanese style of Kendo - the name escapes me - but Neil used to say that the sparing part of the art was almost identical to the Japanese counterpart - Iado is a bit different from that - lol

Doughnut asked, "What would be a useful art for the real world?"

Except for those lucky one shot fights, most street fights end up on the ground. I would highly suggest an art that optimizes free sparing with an emphasis on ground fighting.

I believe the MOS in question is DFB (Death From Below). and....
absolutely- SeAL isn't a rate unto itself.
In the 80s, there were personnel from other branches moving through BUDs, much as many SeALS , to this day, get jump-qualified at Bragg or Benning.
There were plenty of DOD personnel passing through several different branch SOF schools per cadre, in those days.
Some really nice DOD folks flunked outta BUDs back then.
no bigs, they got their small craft and combat swimmer ratings in Coronado, and moved on to EOD school devoid of budweisers and on to jump school and JFK.
takes all kinds, cold-catchers and not.....

Tramp-
You're right I should have called it something like Motor-memory or neuro-muscular memory... for lack of a better term I used muscle memory..but I was hoping people just might get the theory of what I meant.
Those israeli styles are all about using techniques that are closest to the most natural ways in which our bodies move. I'm guessing the schools might just not be easy to find in many places.
I do so miss sparring with the big boys.. ;)

actually, i wasn't pointing the ol' digit at you, that usage is rampant these days.
I started a huge row with PSIA (Professional Ski Instructors group) years back due to their misuse of the term.
It got a little legal, which was hilarious.

Well spidy... Kendo may have to wait a bit... but you can come up to the club when ever and i can teach ya stuff free of charge.. lol.

My opinion on the best style is there is no right answer. Each person has his/her own personal fighting styles/stregths/weaknesses myself w/ my long legs was drawn to the korean styles w/ the fast kicks. Someone w/ good upperbody stregth would prolly gravitate to japanese style, over the years i have meet many people from a whole range of styles. I personally want to take more styles as time goes on. Some styles though do tend to "wear Blinders" and never change w/ the times.

Yes we have tons and tons of TangSooDo and Modukwon styles around my area too. one maybe two are good, but most are cookie cutter, and hurt buisness for clubs like mine that have been around a while and give a quality training.

It took me 5+ years to get my blackbelt then another 10 years to get where i am today. I know some styles that will give you a "blackbelt" in just under 2 years. I have trained w/ 8th degree masters from Korea, Masters from Japanse styles, my belifes are based on the fact that everyone has potential to be great in each one's own way. I currently have students ranging from 5 years of age to 65, yeah the young ones really don't learn too much but they catch on to manners and discipline.

When ever i have a prospective student come into the club, the first thing i ask is what they want for their Martial Arts Training? If they want just to learn to fight then i say watch the class and then decide if they want this type of training. But if they say they want to learn to control their body, and dicipline then i ask them to watch the class, then compare to other schools in the area. 9 times out of 10 they come back.

Cardio vs Aerobic = no difference same thing. cardio workout is aerobic workout... Cardio Karate is a trademark name through NAPMA (national association of professional martial artists) pritty much Blackbelts teaching you basic martial art techniques while getting a strong workout, instead of a basic aerobic instructor telling you to punch wildly w/o cause or direction.

My biggest thing w/ cardio karate is i want my students to give it what they can, but i also want them to learn some basic self preservation skills, like the biggest, and most neglected one is keeping you hands up while in a defensive posistion. THAT IS HUGE!!! most people drop their guard while working out or fighting.. and a trained person will see that and exploit it.

long i know.. sorry

There is a liability aspect to choosing a fighting craft/form/art/system to consider as well. Some professions require restraint and control instead of a spinning elbow to the cheek bone or a knee to the chin. Too much punching might lead to charges of abuse and excessive use of force. Joint control and wrist lock stuff might be better accepted after the fact than a GJJ style pummeling.

The best/cleanest school fight I ever saw was between two Golden Gloves boxers, the worst and meanest was between a wrestler and a football player. In both fights there was no clear winner.

Well of course, the tactics need to fit the situation. I used to box GG. Good clean fighting for the most part, and very difficult to effect cleanly. A very tough tough sport, but it IS a sport.

Now, in a street situation where you might have your life on the line, well, I am not throwing a left hook to the ribs as my first punch.

In these situations (thankfully they are rare) I move to the most lethal targets and use the most elegant weapons at my disposal.

I DID NOT use this thinking once and I paid the price. Never again!

If that creates a legal liability, well so be it. Better that than for your widow to be crying that night.

Just my two cents!

Yep, the situation always dictates the priority. But dead or in prison the wife still cries, so best bet is to avoid both when possible.

So true, but as you know, you only have a split second most times, to assess the situation.

If I err, I am going to err on the side of "lights out" if I can. The other party may have something to say about that also, so I have to take my best shot.

MikeJ- unfortunately, in the eyes of the law, once you've put your hands, soft or hard form, on your opponent, it's assault. makes no difference.
blackbelt- yep- as i'd guessed, you soound like an exceptional dojomeister...and innate physiogomy dictates much of our own personal style preferences, as you point out.
I was busting you virtual balls when i asked you to 'splain the difference between cardio and aerobic. I'm more than aware of the inherent synonymy.

NICE!... by the way.. if i was ever in a "street" fight those fancy pancy jump spining kicks will be put back in my bag o tricks... cause they are just kwel to look at, not much good in a real fight. I am gonna kick the out of your ribs, knees, and yes BALLS! a nice shot to your lower jaw, or kidneys w/ a knucle fist... you best be darn sure a spining backfist/elbow will be used.. most fights end up on the ground if lasting over 30 seconds.. so you best be sure it will be over well before then.

You know the old saying,
I'd rather be judged by 12 than carried by 6.
It is a sad state of affairs when you can get into more trouble than the criminal for defending your life and property.
How in the he!! did this country get to this point?

yeah one of the blackbelts in my club is a pritty successful lawyer.. he said that when it comes to the law it states "you can only use as much force necessary due to the degree of threat." in other words if you are both bare fisted then you can't beat the living tar out of the person, but if he as a weapon, or you are w/ a loved one that you must protect, the degree increases..... just remember plant the gun near the body, and get their prints on the weapon....JOKING!

Make sure it has been recently fired too and cannot be traced back to you.
Never even show your throw gun to anyone else.

Yeah, that equal force stuff is a crock too.
So here I am,5'10" and some 6'8" guy breaks into my house and doesn't have a weapon(silly of him) and I'm supposed to go toe to toe with the guy? Yeah right!
Bang, bang, bang, bang, bang, bang, bang, click, click(this is the sound of the second clip going in),bang, bang(throw gun being shot into the wall above and to the side where I was standing, wow, he almost hit me!)

as with most things, the rat's nest of laws surrounding self-defence exists on account of the few using it improperly (grand understatement if there ever was one) --

most laws, rules, processes and procedures exists purly to reign in the smallest possible minority of the community affected -- sigh --

I saw a spinning kick used sucessfully once - it was definately the element of suprise though - managing an ABC in Daytona Beach - this big guy drags this really drunk little guy outside, I follow getting ready to break it up - when the little guy explodes with this flying reverse spinning kick - sweet! - I'm thinking - except both guys go down - the little guy passed out from booze and the big guy out cold - I tell the bouncers to get two buckets of ice - poor it over both - the big guy leaves holding his head and the little guy is escorted home by his girlfriend - the little guy comes in latter the next day to appollogise - I told him not to bother - it was the best I'd ever seen that technique done - lol -

lol... i had a student a couple years back. He wasn't much of a "tough guy" but he was short and stocky. I am 6'3" and at the time 195lbs. he and i were sparring, pritty hard if i remember correctly, and i hit him square in the chest w/ a jump spinning side kick, knocked him back into the wall.. he falls flat on his chest. I think i killed the poor guy.. but he leeps up and yells "THAT WAS GREAT!!!" i almost crapped my pants.

ok i have broken untold amounts of boards, my last test w/ a standard side kick i broke 7 boards (1-1"T 12"x12" pine board = 1 human rib) so this was quite a surprise to me.

of course in the 15 years of training i have been knocked out 2 times, broken untold ammounts of bones, many bruises and scrapes, and accually been bitten (by one of my younger students), I HAVE EVEN HAD MY CUP BROKEN IN TWO!! (angry female student who couldn't get a shot in until she went for an "illegal" target.

So who wants to sign up? lmao

I have been down plenty of times. The worse is when John Scully (now a boxing trainer of some repute) hit me with a right cross in GG training.

I did not actually go down but was out on my feet.

John is a gentlemen, he helped me back to my corner. Nice gesture, he could have killed me.

BTW-I hit John with the best punch I think I ever threw. He shook his head and said, "nice punch!"

I knew I had no future in GG after that.

PS-John was national runner up GG champ and he was damn good!
