It was a little after 8:00 tonight. All was quiet in my little neck of the woods. In the day time my street is extremely busy but at night usaly quiet. Well tonight I heard a big screech followed by a big wham followed by what I thought was screaming. Apparently my dog decided to jump the fence & explore outside. The street is dark & has a 25 mph speed limit. A lady came flying through at about 60-70 mph according to the skid marks when she nailed Shiva. He's a very large dog being half Akita, 1/4 Siberian Husky & 1/4 Wolf. An impact at 25 mph would not have hurt him much if at all. At 60 -70 mph though, he was tossed about 15 ft & slid another 10 or so ft & actually slid under a parked car & was wedged. I had to get a jack & jack the car up so to get him out. The lady who hit him kept asking if there was anything she could do & that she was so sorry. I ignored her while I did what I could for my boy. Someone had called 911. I guess they thought it was a car wreck. Well as soon as the sherrif showed up the lady up & left. I guess she didn't want to explain why she was flying throgh a 25 mph zone where all kinds of pets & children play. The Sheriff, the GF & a neighbor helped me get my doggy in the truck but he passed on before I could even shut the door. At least he got to see me before he left this world. I can't really do anything against the lady who hit him being as he was out on the street butI'm sure her car is pretty messed up & she can't do anything to me about damages to the car cause she was going well over the speed limit. I know she's aware of that cause if she didn't she wouldn't have bailed when the Sherrif showed up. That little ppochey was more than a dog. He was more than my best friend. He was my brother in spirit & now he really is in spirit. Sorry for the bummer post but it's late & I had to get it out before I did something really stupid. Tomorrow I'll did a really really big hole & give him a proper burial then go on a long ride to soothe the soul.  | ||

Sorry for your loss...and I hear you about the too fast driving on residential streets. We get teh same on our street all the time...especially because it is a "County Island" within the city limits. | ||

Hang in there Tom. I still can't talk much without being overcome with emotion about the passing on exactly four weeks ago today of my best buddy, Roger the Border Collie. But Roger's death was not sudden or unexpected; he had turned 16 the month before. The old adage that a dog is man's best friend is so true in so many ways. That there exists such creatures who display undying loyalty and absolutely unconditional love towards us humans is almost an incomprehensibly wonderful blessing for those of us who welcome it into our homes. I cannot begin to estimate the joy and love and just plain friendly companionship that dog brought to my life. The screen is getting all blurry on me already. God bless you Tom. | ||

Sorry about your pup. I've lost too many animals to cars over the years. I guess we should all remember to take it easy in residential areas, whether we're on 2 wheels or 4. | ||

I'm not a dog owner nor lover. Me and dogs don't really get on. That said, I don't really (ever) participate in pet threads but hell Tom that's a terrible blow. He's the kind of fugly dog I would like. In the UK it's a driving offense NOT to report hitting a dog with a motor vehicle. I don't suppose anyone's been prosecuted for years for not doing so though, as many don't. Sad news for you Tom. Rocket | ||

There is a time & place for speed. even 128 mph if there's no threat to anyone or anything. Hell I even posted there that if I could travel a road that had no other cars, people or critters on it that I would fly. But in residential zones or places that I know or even have the slightest suspicion that there are people and animals around I go slow. I fly on the rural backroads where there are no homes or anything but as soon as I reach town I'm slow & respectfull & always on the look out. This lady was flying through an 25 mph area that all know is heavily populated with God knows how many cats, a few dogs & about six toddlers and a hanfull of pre-teens. Anyway.... Thanks for the kind words fellas. It's kinda funny cause I had intended to hit the cancel post button. Just writing that kinda helped calm me. But my hand just sorta automaticly hit the post button instead. At first I was embarrased at having spewed all that but now I'mm glad I did  Thanks. Now I'm gonna hit the shower (took three hours to dig a hole big enough) & then go meditate the Buell way. Metalstorm, I am truly sorry to hear you lost a friend. I can say that with full knowledge as I have a 1/2 Akita 1/2 lab mix. She is the most loyal, loving and protective dog I have ever had. She's getting on in years now and I know someday in the not too distant future, I'll lose her too. CM  | ||

People often drive beyond their sight distances in residential areas. They look down an empty road and assume they can stop if something way up there shows up...probably true. The problem is that sight distances in residential areas are only to the next tree or parked car (about 10ft to 20ft). When you realize this, you feel claustrophobic going the posted 25mph. | ||

I am really sorry to hear that. My dog is getting up there in age and not doin so well (15 years is pretty old for a dalmation) and I kills me to think he will gone shortly. I can imagane losing my best friend that way, I sorry for you | ||

Sorry about your loss. It is so hard to loose a friend. I stay onto all the people that I ride with about going fast around areas that have a high number of houses in it. There are plenty of places to go fast without risking making someone mad and having people loose respect in you. | ||

I usually don't post in threads like this, but this one hit a soft spot with me. I've got two doggies at my feet as I type this. I've lost a few myself, it always hurts more when it could have been prevented. There's just so little that can be said to make it better. Our only option when faced with trials like this is to endure, which you already seem to be doing quite well. I'm sorry for your loss. | ||

Tom, your comments on 128 mph, and coming at a time like you're going through, are really appreciated by me. In the UK it is a given that bikers slow down through the villages and in the towns. dogs are very special, and somehow, when you're not looking, steal big chunks of your heart. i'm terribly sorry for your loss. i am glad you and Shiva got a few private moments before he passed on. i'm sitting on the couch now with my dog, and i know how special dogs can be. be careful on your ride. write a letter to Shiva, and bury it with him. Metalstorm- at this very moment I sit with 3 dogs playing joyfully around me. 2 of them being rescue dogs. And many we have buried. Take a long slow ride and be careful. My wife and I both feel that they are more like our children than pets. Here is a special poem that makes me get a tear everytime I read it, but in my heart i believe it to be true, Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge. When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable. All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind. They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster. You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart. Thanks for all the concern The ride helped. Nothing like a good twisty road to make everything disappear while you engage your full focus on the moment at hand. Thankyou for the poem U4euh, that was really beautiful. Rocket, no need to thank me for level headed comments. That's just who I am. I basicaly opperate in one of two modes. I'm either in "level headed logical" mode or I'm in "smart arse" mode. I havn't yet figured out how to get into a happy middle mode. | ||
