typically mil. surplus stores near bases will have 'em, it's illegal for military personnel to boost any casings.
I have some .50 cal. Kotex if ya need 'em.
(anyone know what those are?)

just the empty brass shell, Dana --

X-number gun salutes are performed using a variety of pieces -- I've seen everything from M16s to 16 inch naval guns used (cover your ears for those, btw!)

Do you want new or used or surplus tarnished?

Not that I have any, but if I know exactly what you want I can "ask around" some.

surplus tarnished would be fine, Mike -- no need at all for new, though if that's all that's available, that'd be OK as well

thanks!

Cheaperthandirt.com has new unprimed brass, if this linkage works:

cheaperthandirt.com

I can check down at the local surplus shop tomorrow maybe. There's also Midwest Shooters Supply a bit north of West Bend off I-45, plus a local shop in Menomonee Falls that might have some brass. Shooters Supply (on 76th?) and another place in Milwaukee (off 43rd north of Lincoln) might also have new and sometimes some used or tarnished brass.

I assumed you wanted the .50BMG stuff.

Had an uncle out in Oregon when I was a kid who had several buckets of the stuff gathered from various places when he was elsewhere out of the country doing various stuff he didn't talk about much, but that's long gone along with him I'm afraid to say.

I'll ask around in any case and post back on Monday what I find unless you find something before then.

Mikej: I clicked on that link, and noticed that there were items in the shopping cart. I assume that means it took me to your personal account. I changed the link to their homepage to avoid any privacy issues for you. Hope that's OK--just trying to look out for ya!

Bomber,
I can get some from a surplus place near me.
They have them with the bullet but are unusable as they have a small hole in the base.
Would they work for you?
They are about $3 each.
I could have them out to you tomorrow if you want.

Brad -- wow, I knew this board was the place to go for all sorts of good data!

I'd love about 6 of em, if they are easily grabbed -- let me know how and where to send the filthy lucre to you -- also, let me know if there's anything I can do for you!

Brad, as long as you're going would you mind checking and seeing if they have 40mm grenade brass? I have a display on my desk here at Redstone Arsenal with all of the brass currently in use from 25mm on down but haven't ever been able to locate a 40mm grenade brass. If they have one, I sure would appreciate it if you'd grab one for me.

Try again, grounder

My understanding, a cement truck is limited to 8 yards, forgot if its weight or what
If a contractor knew the supplier, he could ask for the extra yard, and fill the entire truck up
hence the whole 9 yards

In a gun salute, usually 3 pieces of brass are inserted into the flag as it is being folded. The brass should be from whatever rifle is being used during the ceremony. 5.56mm (.223 Rem) if a M-16 is used, 7.62mm (.308 Win) if a M-14, and 30-06 if using a M1 (unless converted to .308). I must have done about 40 of these in my last few months in the Marine Corps.

I can't imagine what it would be like to have to stand at present arms with a Barrett M82A1 while Taps is played. I am sure that it will be an attention grabber though.

BTW, the "Whole nine yards" phrace comes from WW2, the 50 cal belts in most planes were 24' or 9 yards long.
When someone got the "Whole nine yards", it meant the fighter jock never let up on the trigger and emptied the entire belt into the target.

Right? What do I win?

Brad

Oops, I should have read the link above!
I remember hearing the phrase in the early to mid sixties. from an old WW II vet.

"The Whole nine Yards" refers to Kilts. (Though most are only 6 yards or so now a days. )

A true Great Kilt, ( not the cheater kilts with sewn in pleats, & a separate "plaid", or utili-kilts ) has 9 yards of wool, and goes around the waist, over the shoulder, and can be adjusted for hot ( off the shoulder, kinda fluffed out ) to cold weather. ( wrapped around the torso )

http://www.tartanweb.com/greatkilt/ or

http://www.ealdormere.sca.org/university/greatkilt.shtml

The silly things are quite comfortable, I have no worries about my manhood, ( though, depending on venue, I may wear humorous underwear ) and the Utilkilt ( Cheater! ) is handy for changing out of race or fighting gear. No damn good for riding a motorcycle IMHO. For shiny .50 brass try Midway USA.

I think I've got about a 1/2 an MRE box full of .50cal brass. Just don't recall where I stuck it at.

Plus I've got several feet of linked 5.56 brass. Thats going to be used as a display around my marksmanship awards.

Late checkin out this post...sorry...

I haven't seen too many people totin around 50 Cal's in the MP Corps, the big gun of choice though is the MK-19, which fires 40MM rounds (Grenade). I suppose I could snag a few pieces of brass (- the grenades obviously) if anyone needs 'em. Go to enough ranges that brass is pretty easy to come by...lemme know
