Hello, new owner here 2002 M2. Was running fine pulled it out the garage and all it will do is turn over. Checked plugs for spark, had spark but seemed a bit weak to me. could smell fuel might have flooded it. Think it might be fouled plugs? what is the best plug to run. If the safety switches like the one on kick stand and neutral went bad would the engine still crank?

Gas visible in tank?

Gas on? (lever pointed forward not down)

Enrichener pulled out?

With the enrichener out, leave the throttle alone and it should start and fast idle. I don't touch the throttle, run it 15-20 seconds or so, then push the enrichener in and open the throttle for a 1,500-2,000 RPM warm up.

My 2000 M2 will pop back through the carb if I do throttle blips before it is warmed up for a few minutes so I just hold a steady fast idle by hand or set the idle speed up with the adjuster.

The recommended plug is the 10R12, that replaced the 6R12 which is too hot. That was changed in a service bulletin, ignore anything that calls for a 6R12.

As far as I know, none of the safeties kill just the ignition, if it will crank over it should start and run. The kick stand and neutral safeties keep the bike from cranking. But if in gear with stand up, it will crank if clutch is pulled in (that allows a quick restart on a killed engine).

"The kick stand and neutral safeties keep the bike from cranking."

The kickstand switch won't keep the bike from cranking when it fails, it keeps the bike from running if you let the clutch out with the bike in gear. You can replicate the symptoms by trying to let the clutch out with the bike in gear with the kickstand down.

The HD6R plugs are too hot, you run some risk of melting a hole in a piston. You should be using the cooler HD10R plug.

Look for the "Plugs,Carb, ignition.pdf" file here to read about the plugs.

What did the old plugs look like? What color? Fouled? etc.

Pull one of the new ones and look at it, if it is very close to white in color and has no soot around the outside, I'd not ride it hard until I got the cooler plugs.

Max,take those plugs right back to the dunce that sold them to you.10R12 plugs are specified for all the tubers. There was even a notice sent out to all dealers on this years ago.

The 10R or a plug of equivalent heat is used on nearly all the H-D and Buell models that used the EVO engine.

I bought H-D branded plugs when I could not find Buells. The are marked "Plug No. 10R12A, Part No. 27671-01K".

The Engine - Electrics page in the KV has the following info for plugs:

Buell 27661-00Y (10R12) (Supersedes old/hotter 6R12 OEM plugs)
NGK DPR7ea-9 hot (not recommended)
NGK DPR8EA-9 medium
NGK DPR9EA-9 cool (equivalent to Buell 10R12)
DCPR same except socket size

The 6R was stock in the Buells through '02, I believe...when it was announced in "FUELL" that ALL Buell users should switch to the 10R. I did so and immediately noticed a complete end to the detonation I had sometimes experienced at lower RPMs. If your dealer is too much of a doofus to get the 10Rs go someplace else...Call DaveS. I swear, they ought to have a competency exam for Harley dealers who want to sell Buells.

Shouldn't be a big deal to get Buell correct plugs at any HD dealership, just ask the parts guy for V-ROD plugs and they'll smile as they hand them to you instead of "you want plugs for what?" or "we don't stock parts for THEM"
See, you can get Buell parts with a smile.
