Agreed, concerning the Salvation Army. They have proven themselves to be excellent stewards of disaster relief donations. Not so, the American Red Cross.

Here's another way to help. My wife is the microbiology laboratory manager at a local hospital and has arranged for a Life South blood donation bus to be at our church a couple Sundays from now. The church is sponsoring a blood drive and the blood will be earmarked for Katrina relief. We're going to get the other two Episcopal Churches in the area involved, so it'll be a three-parish effort. We've also informed the Diocese of our efforts and have asked them to push the concept Diocese-wide. There's more to give than money! If your church or company will sponsor a blood drive you could be saving lives in the most direct manner possible.

We sent $100 to the Salvation Army on Thursday. I prefer to give to faith based organizations. You can donate online via your credit card.

well if it counts we will be armed (but then again i will be carrying money) my mission overthere if i still have to go (not sure yet if still going) is to basicly fund the recovery and provide funds to soldiers that use banks that were affected by the storm.

Firebolt20283 - I will be doing volunteer work at the temp hospital at the N.O. airport. If you are in that area and have time (we'll be busy I know) then look for the HPC workers. I should be with that group.

I saw on CNN that LA is filing some criminal charges against a couple nursing home operators because they didn't evacuate their patients who later drowned in the flood.

They were asked to evacuate and they didn't, so I can sort of see the states point. At the same time, given how many mistakes the state made in dealing with this, it seems somewhat hipocritical to prosecute others for theirs.

There are also rumors and reports of other things happening in hospitals and clinics down there. That "news" is just starting to surface.
