Lucas Glad to hear you are OK and have power again.
Like I said earlier my prayer are for the people of La, Mi, and Al.
The area I live is 75% cajun decent, I am married to one (Kaplan La) so we feel a strong connection to Louisiana.
According to local media we have about 6000 evacuees here now, some children have already registered and started schools here.

Thanks again for the info. FWIW each, "I'm ok" we get from a fellow Baddwebber is a small victory and something to celebrate. Its a sad feeling to want to DO something to help and know that theres not much at this point any one can do until things are a little better sorted out,
Stay well

RT:
Have you heard from Bomber lately?
Lucas:
with the price of gas going up your lively hood may improve,

Lucas: Good news!

Oldog: Glad to help. It feels good to get even one lay person to understand that the oil industry isn't just a bunch of fat guys in suits with cigars in their mouths figuring out new ways to gouge the public.

Hell, I rarely wear a suit, and I don't like cigars...

Hm, I haven't heard from Bomber lately either, now that you mention it. I'll give him a call.

I live north of New Orleans. Got lucky and had no flood damage. Lots of wind damage here though. Electric was restored about 4 p.m. today. My family and I feel really blessed right now...

Hmm, I'm crying for the poor oil companies, being the most profitable corporationsin the world, and making ever higher profits every quarter. Yup. Go look it up. Sure, in some states, like CA, the highest profit on a gallon of gas IS made by the tax man, and alot of gas stations have fixed deliveries, and have to pay for gas they may not have sold, and don't have room to take, so it is hard to place the blame on the gas staion owner unless he is gouging. Most profitable companies on Earth. New profit records every year. When's the last you guys got a REAL raise? Don't feel sorry for the oil company. No offense to any fellow badwebbers in the business, of course: ) And my feelings definitely go out to you oil Co. employees who are stuck in this mess, and have to clean it up and get everything back on line...
Interesting, I thought I heard something on the news today, I think maybe Canada and England and maybe Germany? were going to send help. I've seen some of the footage on the news, this is horrifying! My heart really goes out to these people...

Great to hear you are okay Lucas. Was thinking about you big time.

Matt,
Our government declared the entire region a federal disaster area even before the Hurrican hit. They did so in order to achieve the optimum response to what they knew was going to be a horrendous disaster. In short, don't believe the naysayers in the media. I also hear that as many as twenty nations have pledged support. It's all good. Thanks for your staunch support, that means more than you can imagine.

That's great news SuperDave!

Superdave: Where are you located? My mom's place is just west of Robert, she's been out of state since way before the storm, I don't know if she's had any damage, but if I could find somebody nearby that could do a quick drive-by and tell me whether the house still has a roof, or if any really big trees fell on it, it would set her mind at ease.

Ping me off-line if you can help out...

Thanks!

Lucas, Hey man I grew up in Houma. My parents stayed home for the storm. As of this morning they still didn't have power, but it is working its way down the street. I am glad to here you are ok. That area dodged a big one. 75 miles to the west and Houma would be History.
How is the price of gas for everyone? Here we had a locally owned chain of stop-n-robb stores stop selling fuel. All 10 or so all ran out of fuel at the same time. Well someone called the Texas AG and what do you know? They found more fuel. Price gouging is unforgivable imo. One store even told a caller that they would not sell any fuel until the price went up. Any other stories like this? May Be I should get the wife a bike. Let's see, A XB12X or may be a XB12Ss or both. ; )

Oh Iceman, no harm done. I just think it is really easy for someone not connected to a place to write it off when the unthinkable happens. Just as it has been said not to rebuild the twin towers. The city is too important not to rebuild. Man I never thought the day would come when I would defend New Orleans. I really don't like the city and would never live there. That being said there are those who love, I mean absolutely love the city and those are the very ones who will rebuild it.

Again Cajun sorry, I too do not like the city, to each their own, that's what is great about this country. So how far away are you? I'm 95 miles from Chi-town and its gettin closer. Ya the ga$ is bad here it changed 3 times today. I think before a station close to my place closed it was $3.29 for reg. The Buells are the way to go, people just don't understand, our form of transportation is good on fuel. New Buell ad (attention DaveS and other Buell dealers!) SAVE FUEL, BE COOL, RIDE A BUELL!!!

Ice, I'm 40 miles south of Houston, but the price gouging by that one chain surprised me. It is a locally owned business, and the owners are well known in the community. I'm sure there will be ramification for this they didn't expect. Yep I think more and more people will look into motorcycle ownership.

Looks like we're sending some boys down there to help "calm" the situation down. We evidently have some Marines on the way and seeing how they just got back from Iraq, I'm pretty sure that they won't take to kindly to being shot at and will return that favor in kind. It's time to clean up the thugs and lowlifes in what is left of the City of New Orleans. God Bless All those down there who were affected by this.

Southern: Looks like the rules of engagement in NOLA have changed. I heard on the TV news this morning that 8 looters have been shot dead already.

"Gov. Kathleen Blanco called the looters "hoodlums" and issued a warning to lawbreakers: Hundreds of National Guardsmen hardened on the battlefield in Iraq have landed in New Orleans.

"They have M-16s and they're locked and loaded," she said. "These troops know how to shoot and kill, and they are more than willing to do so, and I expect they will."

I live in Jackson. As of 9/2/05 at least 50% of the city is without power. The few gas stations that are open have very long lines. I gassed up my van before this started being the thinking fellow I try to be. I got siphoned dry wednesday night. The first couple of days it were a bit dodgy getting around on the bike due to idiot cagers and no traffic lights but most of the signals are now working. I just gotta watch myself around the gas lines because people will get fed up waiting in line and will pull out in my lane like they own it.
Things are slowly getting back to normal except for lines at the gas stations and lines at the grocers. I stocked up on everything last week so I'm not too worried about either. I might have bitched about the fuel mileage on my Buell before but now 50mpg looks purty damned sweet.
I just heard that I might also have to dodge bullets around the gas lines.

I'm looking out the patio doors whilst the storm is in full blast. My dog, Connie, is watching the proceedings from the safety of the patio. Suddenly, we get a monster gust that pushes her plastic dome shaped doghouse towards her with some vigor. Connie jumps, I swear, 5' straight up and now she won't go near it.
Mom's having problems with her next door neighbor about the ownership of a very large branch that fell and tore up a section of chainlink fence. It's as clear as beer where it came from but the neighbor ain't having none of it.
All in all, I got real lucky and got a primer in emergency preparedness. I will be buying a generator and it will be converted to run on natural gas. I will be getting some uh, hurricane lamps as well. Candles suck as reading lights.

The police are still denying access to some areas close to your mom's place so we may not be able to get in yet. I don't know. As soon as I know something I will email or call you.

I have some first-hand knowledge about well meaning people with the very bad idea of loading up a truck with whatever they can get donated and driving it down there. It's a very, very bad idea.

Good intentions aside, the authorities are trying to get people out and won't have anything to do with stuff coming in. We waived off a Army National Guard Major just back from Iraq who had the same idea. The authorities are telling everyone to stay away, and for very good reasons:

- The gangs that have ruled New Orleans under cover of night have been exposed by Katrina. They are exchanging gunfire with police and National Guardsmen.
- Drug addicts (we're talking about New Orleans here) have been without drugs for nearly a week and many of them are armed. They've looted drug stores and hospitals. They won't care who you are or anything about your fine intentions if you have something they can trade for drugs.
- The flood waters are contaminated with human and animal waste, dead bodies, leaking chemicals from gas stations and cars and every kitchen and garage in the city. The city is a volatile cesspool, a public health hazard previously unknown in this country.
- A litany of diseases, deadly and communicable, are being discussed by the public health organizations: Typhoid, cholera, tuberculosis, West Nile virus, dengue fever, malaria, hepatitis A, Norwalk virus, etc. What the authorities do not need is for a do gooder to go down there and take typhoid or cholera back home with them.

It goes on and on. Well meaning people could easily disappear in the disaster area, never to be heard from again. Worse, they could bring disease back home with them and escalate the public health problem.

The very best thing people can do is donate to the organizations that actually know what the hell they're doing in a disaster situation. The Salvation Army is an excellent choice. Having your church sponsor a Sunday blood drive is another. (That's what my church is doing in conjunction with the other Episcopal Churches in the area.)

}A note of caution: The American Red Cross took in millions of dollars in the wake of 9-11 and a year later was embarrassed to have to own up to the fact that very, very little of it ever got to the intended recipients of those donations - the families of the victims. Donate wisely.

Just so those who care about me, I am fine.

I am located about 45 miles southwest of New Orleans. I had a tree knocked over in my yard and a couple shingles off my roof but other then that the family is fine and we made it thought this one.

The Harley dealership was fine also, So I still have a job.

My electricty came on last night from not having it for 3 days

Glad you made it through. I thought Lockport was hit pretty hard. How is the rest of that area? We aren't getting much info about anything south of N.O. or Slidell area.

I am outside of Gonzales. You know where that is? Ascension Parish and south of Baton Rouge.

Dude, you got electricity faster than I did! We were without electric until yesterday afternoon. Now if I can just find some gasoline...distribution is not great right now.

South of New Orleans was pretty much wind damage. No flooding. but pretty much electricity and gas. are like gonzales. Areas still dont have electricity around here and the areas that do are constantly blanking on and off. I dont know much about grand isle and port fouchon yet.

Check out this website for aerial shots of all of the damage for Katrina. I'm sure that name will be retired. You can see how close the eye was to New Orleans. Seems those west of New Orleans faired well as far as water damage goes. Although anywhere close to the coast probably didn't fair too well. I know South Terrebonne Parish had a lot of water flooding.

I don't believe you can beat the Salvation Army when it comes to the percentage of resources actually given to people when they get donations. They have a great record.
