Also, while I am not a fan of "throw parts at it", in this particular case the cam position sensor does tick three important boxes:

1) They do sometimes fail.
2) They are light and would pack in a small space.
3) They would be easy to replace quickly while on a road trip.

So if you did just buy one, and swap it, you then will be in one of two states:

1) Your bike now runs perfectly, and you know the bad CPS was the problem.
2) You still have a problem to fix, but you now have a new CPS in the bike, and a used but working CPS as a hot spare to pack along for road trips.

I snapped up a used working spare (even after putting a brand new one in) that I'll be packing on road trips... in a little bag with a spare Hepco latch, new rear wheel bearings, new rear wheel bearing spacer, etc.

So was this a "Oh sh!t" moment when it stuttered out on the highway? Not really surging and bucking, but that little 2-step burp that just scares the crap out of you when it happens? Mine did the same thing yesterday after about 10 miles into a 20 mile ride to work. Took even less time to start acting up on the way home, might have gotten 2 miles down the road and it was randomly lurching and the tach would drop off to nothing momentarily. It's weird, only seems to do it while cruising at highway speed, never really happens when on the throttle or putting around town.

Glad you got yours sorted, looks like I'm headed down the same road on my 03 xb9. Might have to get one of those scopes, looks like a pretty cool little tool.

I put some new shoes on my 1125 so it's good to go now, it's nice to have more than one bike to ride.

That's pretty much spot on what I felt when mine went.

Watch the tach... if it spikes *up* when the bike is choking, my bet is that it is the crank position sensor failing (messy signal from the CPS making the tach think you just added 1000 RPM). If something else is going wrong, the tach should drop a few RPM's (as that is what the bike is doing).

New one should be here Tuesday, hoping I get it installed and timed for the weekend. I'd like to run up to HC with it this year if possible.

When I did mine, I got myself wrapped around the axle a bit being lazy with ECMSpy and the TPS reset. I hit the TPS reset button while diagnosing things without backing the idle all the way off, which screwed everything up, so that when I put in the new CPS it was still running bad (different but still bad).

Once I calmed down and realized where I went wrong, and did the TPS reset correctly and rode it long enough to settle in, all was good.

Well, I think I found the guilty party on mine.

Rough marked the original timing.

Some damage...

From the looks of it, someone drilled into it at some point and cracked the sensor.

Took it out for about 45 minutes or so, ran just fine. Absolutely no stutters anywhere in the rpm range, cruised at 3500, 4k and 4.5k rpm. Rolled it up over 110 mph and it pulled pretty good all the way there.

I'm wondering if the failure was actually unrelated to the hole. Just because that hole is so far out to the corner... seems like it would not have hit anything important.

But who knows... Glad it's fixed!

I'll continue testing for the next week before I make the decision on which bike goes to HC this year. Rode to work this morning, nothing major happened, so it's looking good so far. More miles before it's pronounced 100% fixed.

Reep, just wanted to say thanks for taking the time to make this post.
My Uly had the same symptoms, did a search of the old knowledge vault and found this thread. Made an order for a CPS from American Sport Bikes (AL shipped same day!) and had my bike running in no time. I'd have never figured that one out.
Thanks again!
Bosh.

Reppi

thanks for the great walk-through on the CPS replacement. I'm having the same issues. I do have the service manual but I've never messed with the timing. then again, there's a lot of things I've never done before i had this Uly and the service manual but so far i've stayed out of trouble. are the manual instructions good for resetting the timing once I pull the CPS?

Yes, the service manual gives a pretty good description for the static timing adjustment.

I marked the old sensor and case before I moved it, and transcribed the mark to the new sensor, to get it close.

Mines an 07, I think some of the newer ones (08 and up?) don't even need timing adjustment anymore, the CPS has only one position.

well before i ordered a CPS i wanted to check the wiring. i'd heard others had had some chafing leading to similar problems. pulled all the skirt and belt cover to see the wires/. some time ago i had the dreaded 77 connector issue with the stator so i started to work on the pin connector for the CPS. it just slipped right off with just a little gentle pressure. no locking mechanism at all. the pins looked clean. it couldnt be that simple could it? just a loose connection. I'll put some dialectric grease in there, wrap it up tight and run it tomorrow. or am i just thinking wishfully?

I won't burst your bubble. : )

(It could be a connector problem... but the sensor is far less reliable than it's connector).

well that was not the answer. ran well for the first 15 minutes as usual. stopped it,waited 5 minutes then took another ride. first couple minutes was fine. then the skip and tach sweep happened. then the fun really started - stuttering, skip, backfiring. stalled twice with easy restarts. CEL codes, which never appeared on the previous episodes are all over the place.

21 exhaust actuator - I have a drummer so......
36 fan - i had long issues with the fan and pseudo spark skip mode so my fan is hard wired. and i used it the whole trip

11 TPS

13 O2 sensor

14 engine temp

i hate to admit it but i guess its time for a real mechanic

It sounds like a bad CPS.

What year is the Uly? That scope I used is down to like $80 these days...

its a 2006

i will probably check out the dealership this weekend. i've used them before. it's close - under 10 miles - and they used to have a mechanic who raced a modified buell. if they can do it for 1-2 hours of labor, I'd spring for it. my trailer is off the road right now and i'm not confident i'll be able to reset the timing

thanks

now i'm thinking as long as i'm taking it in, i might go with an EBR ECM. I'd had other issues that I think might be attributable to a cracked ECM

Finally got the new CPS via American Sport Bike and a new ECM from EBR. Now I find my old ECM Spy program is corrupt so I guess I'll be going to the dealership to reset the TPS anyway

did you re-rivet the timing cover back in place or use existing screw holes?

Well I got the bike back after I had the dealer replace the CPS and reset the TPS after an EBR ECM for Drummer. THey also put in new plugs and made some other adjustment I can't remember. IT runs great again.

They said they tested the CPS and found it bad but I'm skeptical.

Hard to say. Symptoms are close to a bad CPS, but could have been a bad ECM as well.

Did you get the old parts back? I can rig up a home brew way to test them.
