Here goes..... Just put d and d pipe on the bike about a week ago, sounds bad ass! At the same time the bike started clicking when I would try to start it. I'm almost positive these r not related. I have been running on my hi beam only for about 3 months, low beam blows out in less then 30 sec. I also have noticed riding at night that my bulb goes from bright to super bright rather regularly. Just the other day I rode for about 100 miles, when I pulled into the wifes work the check engine light turned on, didn't think anything of it since it was about a 100 degrees out and the bike was running fine. When I turned it off I noticed the fan only ran for about 5 sec not the usual 2 min or so which seemed odd. When I went out to start it 15 min later, click, click, click would not start. Jumped it off the wifes car and it ran fine until..... All the gauges blacked out and it started to run like shit then POP! Dead! Pushing my Xb12r 2 miles home is not nearly as fun as riding it! So, what's wrong with my beast? Please help!

Dead battery and chaffed wires by the steering head. Check and clean all relay and fuses terminals.

Terrys1980, I keep the machine on a maintainer, light on maintainer reads battery ok and will take a full charge. Will check for chafed wires and do a quick clean up of fuses/ relays and repost status thanks.

All wires around steering head r covered, should I cut this covering off to view the actual wire? Or r we talking chafing to a degree that this protective wrap would show wear? I am beginning to wonder if it is a charging issue, when running, what voltage should I be reading at the batt?

Ok, so tested voltage across battery, was 12.7 with bike off, drops to 12.4 when ignition turns on and fuel pump primed, hit start button, voltage does not change. Is this a failed stator?... Are there any fuses in between to two? Just as a reminder, I keep the batt on a maintainer always when not riding. I assume that is the only reason it shows solid voltage. Any input much appreciated.

With your bike running you should see an increase in voltage. It should be around 14+VDC at 3200rpm. Check you stator resistance between each lead it should be a very low resistance. Also check the leads to ground. That should be OL or max resistance.

Set your multi-meter to AC volts and disconnect your stator. You need at least 28 AC volts across the stator output wires at idle and it should climb to 38 or 50 at higher rpms. Check the stator wires at the pinch point by the cam cover for worn spots. Your DC voltage should be 13 volts fully charged, over 14 when running.

If the charging voltage is low, check the output voltage of the stator which should be 32-40 VAC at 2k rpm. If that is good then its the regulator.

Add my voice to the chorus... It is the stator or 77 connector. Less likely to be the voltage regulator, but possible.

Pull the primary chain inspection cover off and take a strong whiff... If the stator is fried, you'll smell it.

Easiest check to make is for shorts to ground or to each other in the stator output wires. Should be some resistance between them, but very low, less than 1 ohm. No current at all should flow to ground from either wire.

she's up and running thanks to the awesome write up @ http://www.buellxb.com/Buell-XB-Forum/Do-It-Yourse lf-Buell-Mods/How-toDIY-XB-stator-replacement. Hardest part for me was removing the pins on those deutsche connectors! Some info was a little different due to my bike being different year then the one in the write up (engine sprocket nut size) but other then that priceless. It was about a 4 - 6 hr job for me including install of new v.r. and those stupid fricken connectors again (v.r. wiring service pack kit). I would say with a helper it could be done in 2 hrs maybe less. Thanks to everyone for the help and I hope I don't need your assistance for quite some time (knock on wood).

I'm having charging issues with my 07 xb12r, and after doing some tests visually as well as with a multimeter the "77" connector which has not been upgraded yet appears to be in great shape. I also ohmed out the stator and its around 0.6 across the posts. While running however, I'm puting out around 10vac at idle but it jumps right back up to 40+ vac right off idle. It would seam this is not typical from what I read so does this mean the stator is starting to go?
Side not I am not getting any vdc coming from the regulator so I'm not charging. Please help I don't want to change parts out before I find out what's wrong, this could get pricey! Thanks
