sorry for the double post, I posted this somewhere else and then found this forum and thought I may get more help here....

with a little help (squirt of carb cleaner etc) my wife's 02 buell blast starts right up and runs fine. But it will not start when cold without a little help. I can let it sit for 15 minutes or so and it will still start, but if cools off too much it simply will not fire.
I've replaced the plug and the auto enricher. The carb is clean and it's getting fuel to the carb.
I know it needs a new battery, I've been jumping from a car battery...could the battery be the issue? I'm at a loss here and would appreciate any help!

Bwade,
Buell's require a strong battery since you know it needs replaced I would start their as well as making sure all grounds are good.

When you say a little help do you mean throttle ? Also where is your idle adjustment set to ?

first off thanks bosephus for taking time to respond...

yes, starting fluid and I have heard that too much is certainly not a good thing, so I haven't used it much at all. Perhaps a little more background might help. I parked the bike about a year and a half ago and like a moron, didn't drain the gas etc. I live in Texas and didn't dream that it would'nt get riden for so long...anyway we pulled it out the other day and I had the carb cleaned out. I'm not sure what the idle adjustment is set to. We discovered that with a little starting fluid in would start right up and ran great...we even took it on about a 30-45 minute ride and all went great.
but if it gets cold it simply will not start.
I bought a auto enricher and installed it but still no help. I've read that the boot connecting the carb could cause probelms if its old and cracked so I'm going to double check that... Also I'm going to verify that when the carb was cleaned, the jets were cleaned and not sprayed over with carb cleaner...
thanks again for your help, any other thoughts?

Brian,
Drain the old gas if you havent already I played that game with a Blast I bought for my girlfriend this summer as well as not changing the boot since I thought it looked ok but as you have read it's the main culprit for many problems.
To get to the idle screw you need to drill out the cover there are alot of posts to show you where and how (check the THUMPER SECTION). It should be set to 2.5 turns out. While you are their I would check your jets and replace them according to your elevation they are cheap and make a noticeable difference.

i've got fresh gas running through it and i got the bike started yesterday (had to use a little starter fluid) once it warmed up I sprayed some starter fluid all around the boot and didn't notice any change in the idle or sound of the bike (i've heard that is a simple way to test the boot...?)

i'll check out the idle screw and the jets...thanks again for all your help!

Definitely sounds like a plugged or obstructed jet, probably in the "enrichment" circuit. I've just gone through a similar issue with a Mikuni carb on my RS1200. Carbs have more jets than the Air Force. Find them all and make sure you can see through them. Find an exploded drawing and do a seek and destroy mission to find every one of them. Good luck.
My RS had been sitting for a while with previous owners. The accelerator pump was sticking and the idle jet, enrichment jet, and air jet were all plugged with gunk from sitting. Plus the enrichment system was out of adjustment, so pulling the "choke" cable never opened the circuit. I've got it running, but am still tweaking it.

Thanks guys for the input. I downloaded the service Manuel and went back through the carb. Evidently the low idle jet was still clogged up. We are back up and running again :-). Thanks again!

The Blast auto enricher is by default open. It's only after it's heated up that the thing closes off the extra air and fuel needed to start cold. I had the same problem, bought a super boot, cleaned the carb and no start. Turned out the tiny little starter jet was clogged. I took a straight pin, ground it down to half its diameter, then cleaned out that jet. Now my Blast starts every time.

The starter jet is located next to the pilot and main jet, in the fuel area. It's the jet for the auto enricher circuit. That hole is tiny, and if it's clogged, it just won't start cold.

This thread was a life saver for me. I'm new the forum and new to the Blast. I picked one up in January as a first bike. I got it cheap, and I knew that it didn't cold start well. I made it work by covering the carb intake with my hand to choke it. In the meantime, I researched for a long time and tried a lot of stuff. I got a new das boot, I tried adjusting the auto-enricher, I inspected/cleaned the main and pilot jets.

But I had no idea that starter jet even existed, no one talks about it often. I found this thread a few days ago, I cleaned out the starter jet with some really thin wire, and now my bike starts like a champ, EVERY time. Before I had to manual choke it even when it was as warm as 75 deg. Now, just this morning, it started right up at 50 deg out.

Thanks Lucky_mike!
