Holy crap Frank!
Modern medicine is a very wonderful thing.
It's really sad that a stupid driver let you find out the hard way.

Heal up soon and good luck!

liability insurance has a 26 thousand dollar personal injury limit in texas. so i maxed that out of course. above that i would have had to sue the guy in civil court. two things kept me from doing that:

1:The fact that i had absolutely no income and u cannot file a civil suit if u settle with the insurance company (u sign a waiver). needed that money.
2:The fact that the guy is a young kid who has absolutely no assets whatsoever.

i agree. its all horseshit. i will ride again when i can walk, 6 months at least, and i will do a few things differently. first and foremost i have always been a non helmet person as texas does not have a helmet law, but i will wear a helmet from now on. i ended up with road rash on my face and head but no head injury. and second i will not touch a bike without under-insured/un-insured motorist protection.
One other thing that REALLY pisses me off. This kid that hit me did not even have the common decency to call and appoligize to me. i spent over two months in the hospital and will endure a lifetime of pain and suffering and debt, i think an appoligy is the VERY LEAST he could of done. that just goes to show you that there is no sense of respect or responsibility today.

If it doesn't directly affect them they could give a shit. Also, an apology is a sign of guilt. No way in hell your going to hear that.

I'm jones'n to get back at it myself. I shattered my arm playing flag football a week before Father's day. Not as extreme as what your going through but I feel ya.

FLA doesn't have a helmet law either. I may not always wear a jacket (you feel me with the heat factor) but I always wear my helmet. Just never now what the dip shit in that cage is going to do.

i do feel you on the jacket part. i will be checking out those vented jackets though. something like ICON wear. i feel like i should have some kind of protection above a t-shirt as i suffered road rash on my arms, shoulder, and back.

And the guy WAS found AT FAULT by the police AND the insurance company. he was even written a ticket for failure to yield. dont get me started on that slap on the wrist.

Ugh. I just told my physical therapist yesterday "I can't believe how good it feels!"

Famous last words... Apparently, that gave him the green light to *really* work it hard. It worked, it hurts again now : )

Add that to the list of things "never to say to your physical therapist"....

All I can say is wow. I'm a scrub tech and I've been in on surgeries like the ones you've had, and there has never been a time where a bike wreck didn't hurt me a little too (or where the doc didn't scold me for half an hour because I ride). Having that kind of job, I've seen the results with guys that were wearing shorts and the guys who were in full leathers. It's huge, and while it sucks being the example, I hope whoever reads this will realize it's a ton cheaper to buy $1k in safety gear than have these kind of medical bills stack up.

Also, I can't recommend ICON highly enough. Their arc mesh gear is great, and it's not going to break the budget.

Get back to riding Texas_firebolt. The more riders on the road, the more the cagers have to pay attention.

I'm so sorry Texas. Keep your spirit up, it will get better than now. I got t-boned too last year 11 months, 5 days ago. Things looked bad, (not to me, but seemed like I couldn't get a thumbs up, or smile from ppl.) I chose to refuse to be "crippled", and I'm sure not. I ride, I can run a short distance, so what, I wear hiking boots in the summer, you'll get better, God Bless You! Keep the chin up!

i just got some good news out of this whole deal. my total hospital bills for the E.R. visit and 2 month hospital stay added up to almost $331,000!!! the hospital gave me a charity of $324,000. thereby knocking down the total to $5900 even.
other than that im in the painfully slow process of healing and in constant pain but i WILL ride again.

WTF!!?? i guess im not qualified for anything cause im not a lazy bastard who dont wanna work, or have 10 kids by myself. they can forget me paying taxes. if i aint good enough to get anything when im genuinely hurt then i aint good enough to pay bullshit taxes for that shit either....................

Glad to hear you are alive.

Sounds like the hospital in Texas should change their name to Saint whatever.

That is a chunk of change to give you pal.

If the rest of the people are that good natured in Texas then there is hope for the world yet.

Sort of makes up for George W doesn't it?

heh heh.

Be well.

Yeah, Bombardier, the hospital i was at is one of the top trauma centers in the state. Its because of the ambulance taking me there that i still have a foot. And i got on this sort of insurance they offer at the hospital and i now get doctor visits(once a week) for only $10 co-pay and meds for $5 co-pay. And when i have to go back in for surgery it will GREATLY reduce the cost to me. Thank your doctors as they go out of there way alot of times to fix you.

It scares me just thinking about things just like this. I make just enough to not qualify for anything. I pull into the night clinic with my sick little girl, have to pay in cash or they will not see her then spend the next half hour trying to get my car started so we can go buy the meds. All the same, while a family pulls up in a brand new Dodge Ram lifted with 35" tires and pays NOTHING to see the doctor! In the doctors own words "I am truely sorry that you do not qualify for anything, people like you are the ones that really need programs."

I hope you heal very soon and may the crabs of a thousand beaches infest the crotch of the guy that hit you.

UPDATE: I finally got approved for Food Stamps. I get the maximum for a single person with no children which is 6 months of $280 a month. I had to have my Doc fill out a disabled form for them but the lady that saw me couldnt have been nicer and took one look at me and said "I can see that theres no way you could work" and approved me for the max. on the spot. At least its one thing.

Im still waiting on SSI to come along with my case. Ive done everything and just waiting to see theyre doctor and then i should be approved for it. Man it takes forever. I applied back in the end of June!!

Hey Texas_Firebolt, a friend of mine is in a similar situation. he lost his entire left leg to a 17 yr old girl that was texting while driving. she came across 3 lanes of traffic to get into a parking lot when my friend slammed into her. she didnt even use the middle turning lane. she went from the opposite side of the road to ruin his life and she did.

Good news!! Doc said i can start to put partial weight on my foot. He said i should only try to put like 10% weight on it while i walk with the crutches. Also sending me to rehab starting next week.

The bad: He said it would be at least 6-8 months before i can put full weight on it. He was also saying that he will have to go in and do another surgery to fuse my heal bone together because the joint was crushed and is non existant now. It is just bone against bone...

Overall im happy with the news though. Almost 6 months after the accident and counting
