I made a panic stop from about 50 mph after which my forks started making a knocking noise whenever I use the front brake. A little dive causes the knock even stopped with the front brake locked bouncing up and down compressing the fork you can hear it. However standing on the pegs, using the rear brake only, bouncing up and down compressing the fork there is no knock.
Any ideas?

Have you checked your fork oil? It may be low, contaminated, or missing.

It's probably the front brake rotor floating/shifting on it's attachment bushings that is causing the "knock" you hear when applying the brake when pushing down on the forks.

there is a kit i got that replaced the bushings on the front rotor that helped a bit with vibration etc. i got it from eric buell racing. the stock ones can get a bit loose and cause issues. i would do that in any case and see how it does after that.

worst case it's your steerhing head bearings
lift your bike off the ground and check the steering head/neck play by pushing/pulling on the fork legs. there should be none

or

try to locate the noise with a mechanics stethoscope. while someone else bounces on your bike.
preferably an endowed felame in a bikini

and take video (mostly of her) so ... we can ... make sure she does it right

but seriously; my 1125 forks were making a knocking noise even when setting the bike on/off the kickstand. the were re-built under warranty, and the tech found no issues. after re-build they are silent agian
the dealer said that sometimes it happens like that. they dunno why. my guess is the dmaper rod jam nut came loose and a small mechanical clearnce developed inside.

I had the same issue (08 Uly). Applied the front brake>bounced the front fork up and down and with each depression there was a knock - I thought it was my steering head bearings. I took it to the dealer and they said my front motor mount was causing the knock and needed replaced (covered under extended warranty).

Wow, I am having the exact issue with my 08 Uly, it just started after I had the 10k service. I was suspecting my steering head bearing, but will check motor mount and fork oil also.

Keep me posted on progress, we are all having the same issue, so we should all have the same fix, it is never this easy.

Same issue on my Uly. Mine was the front brake caliper chattering when the forks compressed hard. It made a distinct knocking sound. I cleaned the road film off the rotor and caliper with some soapy water and the knock went bye bye. Hope yours is an easy fix like mine.

I had mine at the local dealer, who is vary competent under normal circumstances. They had 2 techs rocking the bike back and forth (making the clicking noise) while a third used the stethoscope to try and isolate the noise. The consensus was that one or both of the fork springs were "Bowing" under pressure and clanging against the inside of the fork tube (They believe the right one). They said that the Dyna had a similar bulletin.

The noise started about 1500 miles after a major service that included fork oil replacement (bike had 16k when it started. We also eliminated the caliper and rotor disc as teh culprits. The Head bearings were adjusted and the noise did not change at all.

I am not convinced, I think there is more wrong and I would hate to start taking things apart without a real idea of where I'm going with the fix.

Same fork knock on my 2010 Long. The technician at the dealer messed around with it for quite a while, trying to figure it out, until finally his service writer called tech support. The verdict? The fork is designed with a floating bushing, so the noise is normal. Irritating, but not anything to worry about.

While they had my bike in their hands, they compared it to another XB that one of them owns. It knocks, as well, just not as loudly. They also said that the Dyna series also has a floating bushing, hence a similar knock.

So does anyone know of a youtube or similar video on changing out the steering head bearings?
