Finally got around to checking the primary chain tension on my 00 X1, not too happy with what i found. Checked it when the bike was dead cold. The tight spot was 6mm (bout 1/4 inch) loosest was just over 15mm (bout 1 1/8ish inch's). I loosened it off a fraction took the tight spot up to about 8mm, now the loose spot is scary loose. It also makes a bit of ticking noise which was never there before....so i think its to loose. Is also a lot harder to find Neutral What would you recommend running a bit tighter or leave it that loose?. I think it needs replacing, but that won't happen for a while due to money probs, specially when ya break the shift lever putting it back on..Bloody $100nz for a new one. That's quite a lot of variation in slack, I would guess your chain is badly worn. (also, fwiw, 15mm is just over 1/2"). |

It takes a lot to wear the primary chain. How many miles on the bike? |

If money is really tight, loosen it until you hear it slap during upshifts, then tighten it back up just until the slap stops. You will need a new chain within a year, it is worn. Remember that the clutch basket nut is reverse thread and the drive sprocket nut is right hand (conventional) thread when you take it out. Too loose will damage your case slowly. Too tight will bend your transmission shaft quickly. |
