Good Day all,

I just got a new tuber crank for my Floppy da Buell (2000 S3t), the price is expensive, at 650 with a discount from non-dealership sources. The reason is explained here: http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/384 2/234655.html

The problem I am wondering about is HD has changed the design of the crank. Its still a press fit pin, but instead of mostly cast finish, it now has the radius and outside surfaces machined. The machining looks to have removed any casting numbers, and I have yet to find a part number. The 3rd party dealer confirmed with HD that it was the correct part.

So, I am concerned about balancing. Since tubers are no longer in production are they only making sportster cranks then doing extra machining to balance? And will it balance like my previous crank? which smoothed out about 4000 rpm.

Some with say, just send it to one person or another, for balancing but I could send the other out for rebuild instead, and send this newfangled part back. The cost of new rods plus rebuilding was similar to a new assembly, but if is isn't going to work right. I don't want to rebuild the lower end and install only to have to tear down again.

Any info would be appreciated.

I compiled the the data on new crank design for tubers, all the critical measurements are the same but a little different weigh and a bigger crank pin. The rods are different with a little less weight at the piston end. I'll put the pictures in the next post.

Can't you use the 08 crank? I understand that it has a pin diameter increase to 1.5".

I have not been able to find the information to know what parts will interchange. A third party ordered this for me without telling me its not the same. As I pointed out the weight seems to be at least 1/2 lb heavier, so maybe this is based on the 08 flywheels, which are also supposed to be heavier.

Are the thunderstorm internals interchangeable with the old model cases?
Does anyone have the part numbers and dimension data for the 08?

Looks bent. Perhaps this is why it is the old one.

I don't think the '08 fits because of the modified oil pump drive.

The '07 might fit. Be worth asking.

I think I'll just use the crank I have at this point. I'm not going to be doing a large amount of track time.

Does anyone in SD have a pinion lapping tool? otherwise I'll break out the mics and the lathe and build my own.

No way...a current Sportster crank looks nothing like any Buell crank. I was puzzled by the lack of balancing holes in mine, but I figure they must know what they're doing. I can't see why they'd alter the balance factor, either.

XB cranks won't work in Buells without big case mods. It's a shame 'cause they're good units and a bit cheaper.

I don't have access to new Buell flywheels or sportster flywheels for comparison. It doesn't make any sense logistically though. Why re-engineer a part for a motor that is no longer in production?

The flywheels castings must be common to some existing part. To bad any casting numbers have been machined off.

I'm taking the cases and crank down to a shop to have them lap the pinion.

Anyone have any recommendation on oil-squirter installation. I remember reading an article on an additional step of adding a check valve to only operate the squirters when oil pressure is above 15 psi, but I cannot find it though searching now.

I may do some testing with a bearing and spring combinations once the squirters arrive.

Most likely they just re-engineered the production process.

I had a few shops tell me that oil squirters had caused a lot of wet-sumping problems at all RPM's, so I decided not to use 'em.

Maybe they just contracted out to a good aftermarket maker that was already producing a compatible part, and let them make them now that they are out of production. Does it look like an S&S piece?

Aren't all of the S&S cranks 3 piece?
However, that doesn't mean they couldn't do this one..

Thats a possibility, Reep. I have not yet seen a picture of an aftermarket crank that looks the same though. S&S is now selling a 1.5 in crankpin model for sportsters.

Does anyone know what at sportster crank and red assembly weighs. The buell is about 20 lbs.

I took the cases to Performance Chopper in El Cajon, where I bought the crank, for lapping in a pinion. Every Harley shop in San Diego county farms out engine rebuilding to someone, and PC does the work for El Cajon.

I'll need to pull it back apart to install the oil squirters. Unless they have the knowledge to install a check valve.

Hope I didn't miss the name in reading here, But I don't see the brand or name of this crank pictured here, with the smooth outer wheels? Is it aftermarket? Heres another thing.... With a stock stroke and pin size, who's rods are best and strongest? and lastly does Carrillo make a rod set for older buell's "1998". Wow the picture of the motor is bad!! I only imagine how you'r heart sunk when you finally pried the head off and the first thing you ....saw... 'oh shit', then pulling the barrel, saying ....'well mebe' and finding a bent rod, hoping thats where it ended. But the work in progress looks like you will have a nice ride soon.
