I know Al sells the VDSTS thingie, but i could have sworn there was more than one tool available. What are my options, respective prices, and which one is the easiest to use?

BTW, I did try the search feature, but the number of posts that mention TPS is utterly overwhelming... I gave up!

The is also DirectLink, which is what is used to talk to the Buells for Dyno Tuning. It has lots of features and CAN be used for way more stuff than VDSTS, but it also costs more too.

VDSTS for TPS reset.

Direct Link for EFI and Ignition Timing mapping.

I don't believe that Direct Links will perform a TPS reset.

Directlink does perform TPS and AFV resets, but ONLY for the ECM that the key is locked to. VDSTS will do it for any Buell that you connect it to.

VDSTS is available as a PC only version, a PDA only version (Palm and Windows Mobile), and a combo PC/PDA version for $54 more ($249 vs $195).

Directlink only runs on a PC.

Sometimes I miss the days of points, condensor, and a feeler gauge.

No kidding! THEN I would already know what I was doing! (1st car = '67 Dodge Ram fixer)

Direct Link seems like a HUGE waste of money. Sure, it can do all kinds of tricks, but what happens when your ECM goes bad? Kablooey! Direct Link becomes useless. Why do they make it lock like that???

I was thinking about getting the racing ecm, but called the local dealer and asked how much they charge to reset tps. They said $160. Seemed really high to me. So if I get ecm I'm getting a vdsts, but will have to wait for vista version. I do have an old pda but wont I need the computer to make that work? Anyway when I get one I'll let Buellers in the Springfield, MO area come over and use it too. Joplins a Buell friendly dealer but wish it was closer.

TPS reset does NOT cost $160!!!!!!! More like $15-$30! I've had it done... it only takes a few minutes, no parts involved, just sheer labor cost. Tell those bastards they just lost a customer for good!

Thats what I'm thinking. I don't know if he knew what he was talking about, but he was suppose to be the "buell tech" (I waited for that specific guy to call me back five hours). I'm buying a stand and a manual and I'm going to do as much as I can on my own, but I'm sure I'll need them for something someday. Never liked buying parts online but looks like I should or go to Cycle Connection in Joplin.

Gunter and the boys have given us all a huge gift with this one.

Thanks for the link Terry. I don't know why google would not turn that up for me.

And you're right, that does look like a nice starting point for the folks with EFI systems that want to do more of their own work.

And people need to read through that thread at that link before they jump into this. Doing your own ECM work is going to be a moderately technical process and it can or will put some of the hardware on the bike at risk.

It looks like it is possible that you could neuter you ECM or render it stupid in the process of screwing with it. But it is one of those things that might be worth the effort to some.

Jack
