Okay, this might sound crazy and possibly stupid: I have a 99 M2 roller in the garage for which I am looking to get an engine. Tough luck, a good one is rare and expensive. Now a guy offered me a basically brand new 05 1200 Sportster engine for a great price. Will this one fit? Which modifications would be necessary? Thanks for your time. I know this might sound stupid....but I have no experience with the stock sportster. All I am trying is to bring a M2 back to life..

No.....the back of the cases are different. The 99 M2 has the swingarm attach bracket bolted to the rear of the cases. The Sportster motor has no such provisions. Look for a good used Thunderstorm motor. I see them on eBay all the time.
There are many other subtle differences as well.

Thank you for your info. A Buell mechanic I just talked to said that up until 2003 I could use a Sportster engine. But the later engines were entirely different. So far I was unlucky to find a good used Thunderstorm..... Again, thanks for your help!

Hey.
Any 5speed Sportster engine until 2003 fits.
Same cases.
