I am not sure if this has been addressed before and I have not seen it, but my bike and my buddies bike, those being mine 2005 XB12R and my bud's 2004 XB12S have been experiencing some strange electrical issues when starting. When I engage the start button the bike seems like it will not start and when it does come to life my trip gauge and clock are reset to 1:00 for the clock and zero's on the trip. I have checked the battery, it is fine, I use a battery tender when I am not riding it, I swap the tender from bike to bike as they all have leads...anyway, as I DO NOT want to even think about going to a stealership I was just wondering if anyone else had experienced this before. SOMETHING is burnt/touching/unplugged/dead/dying, break out the field manual n start tracing wires. Only time anything like that happened to me was when either battery/starter/volt reg/ stator was dead or dying or I had a simple wire worn through or melted. | ||

Carefully clean the battery connectors and re-attach firmly, and look very closely at the ECM wire bundle. Or just slap some cable armor on the wire bundle at potential rub points under the seat. That was my problem that caused exactly what you describe, a dirty (but firmly connected) battery terminal. | ||

I just put on a new battery tender line and the connections were clean and strong, any my buddies bike is doing the exact same thing. This is strange. I will look at that ECM bundle tonight. | ||

Also take a look at the contacts on the yellow starter switch. I have had to clean mine a couple of times over the last couple of years and 30k miles. | ||

Donnie, I am going to buy the service manual for it and start running the lines..FM..that is funny, haven't heard or read that since the Army. Thanks all..I will keep looking. | ||

I've got the same problem with the resets of the Trip ODO and clock. The bike has been at the dealer 3 times for this problem, the had the bike for a total of over 6 weeks over the last 6 months and still have not fixed the problem. They claim to have been in touch with Customer support and their last attempt was to replace the instrument cluster. This did not help. I'll call customer support later today to see if I can get a little more focus on this issue. Seems to me a few folks have had this problem. What did you do to correct it? Dealer informs me that all the above mentioned efforts have been executed. | ||

FYI, A battery tender won't help if the battery is all used up or damaged. My XB was exhibiting the same symptoms after cleaning the batt terminals and regular tender use. A new battery solved my problem. | ||

Thanks for the response Darryl.  My Uly does turn over slowly sometime but always starts. I think perhaps you've got it! | ||

See Mine did this too.....Whoever had the bike before me didnt get the seat on the right way and it didnt clip in and the bottom of the seat was pinching against the Postive cable, also the bolt on my battery were a little long so I put a few washers and moved the battery cable a little and that fixed my problems |
