I have just bought a 2003 Sportster transmission with low miles for my Buell(98 S3) project. I have counted the teeth on some of the gears and there is a difference of one extra tooth on the newer trans. Can anyone enlighten me as to the pros/cons of this please. thanks Jodie |

Which gear(s)? How many teeth? |

I think it may be due to the change for second gear - that's my WAG anyway. In '99 or '00 the second gear ratio was changed from what was previously used. Other than that, I know of no other changes to the transmissions and they are the same for the XL and the Buell. |

Matty, you are right. The later models have a slightly lower 2nd gear. I don't remember what year they changed though... Brad |

I think 2000 was the first year for the change on the second gear ratio, I remember seeing two ratios listed in the service manual for the 2000/2001 M2's and that my 2000 had the new ratio. It was a fairly minor change if I remember right but did make the steps in the ratios from 2nd to 5th a little more equal. Or something like that.
