I have been searching the badweb for info on how to replace the crank seal. I'm confused now. I already have the seal, part#35151-74a. What is the spacer I have seen mentioned? I believe henrik said it was a 40240-89? Also henrik, the link to pictures of your install is no longer good. Do you have pictures and maybe a step by step for replacing this seal that you could email to me?

I have a service manual, a parts book, and friends who are better mechanics than me to help me through some of this. I just want better pictures and stuff than the service manual gives.

One final thing, the installer. I work at a GM dealership, would a kent moore seal installer work to install that if I can find one the right size? I know it won't really control the installed depth too much but it might help to get it in there. I'm just stabbing in the dark here, so if anyone has advice to give that would be awesome.

Joel; I have those pictures somewhere. I'll dig them out this weekend - no promises when though. I actually have the web pages so I can send you the whole thing.

I really need to remake that description.

Wow, that was a great link, how come I couldn't find that before? Must be blind. Anyway, in step 1 of the special tool instructions it says to install the new spacer in the seal... blah blah blah. What spacer? Is this something else I have to buy from my dealer? I'll be there today for hot harley nights. Let me know please, I don't want to install the seal and find I still have an oil leak or something b/c I'm missing this spacer thing.

Hey.
Why don't you read your service manual?
You need a new spacer.

I have been reading my service manual. My friends sportster service manual has much better descriptions and pictures than mine. I just don't have his here.

I've been talking to my dealerships service department and they have no clue what spacer I'm talking about. My parts book shows p/n 33344-94 located behind the transmission drive sprocket. What good does that spacer do me when I'm replacing the crank oil seal?

Ok, I went to that link again and looked carefully. I think I know what spacer everyone is talking about. Is this it?
spacer picture

I hope so because the one in the next picture looks new.

Joel; that is indeed the spacer.

OK, so now both my long term and short term memory is shot ... someone else has to tell me I already posted those pictures ... a mind is a terrible thing to loose : )

YAAAY!! I win a beer! That is so awesome, now I can order the spacer, get this done, and keep riding! Gotta love the badweb, or more importantly the people on it.

Don't worry about the memory thing Henrik. I'm 27 and carry a notepad with me to write stuff down. I forget that much. It's even better when I forget to look at the notepad, or forget to bring it with me. Is 27 too young to get "senior moments" as my mother puts it?

Order the insertion tool from Daves.
It's less than 20 bucks.
Make the other part of the insertion tool from a piece of pipe.

We did a friends X1 a couple of weeks ago in less than 2 hrs.
This included lots of other small repairs too. (shifter bushing and seal, all gaskets and O rings, belt adjustment, shock adjustment, etc..).

Daves? maybe you could point me in the right direction. I haven't been here that long. From looking around I think you're reffering to appleton h-d buell, but I could be wrong.

Joel, right again. Daves is Dave S, salesman and Buell parts maven extraordinaire at Appleton HD/Buell. Ask for Dave in Sales.
