Something happened because the problem started all of a sudden, not something that built up over time. When I shift, not everytime but frequently, it seems to han like it ran out of travel befor the shit is complete. It happens both up and down and different gears at different times. /suggestions?

It sounds like your detent plate is cocked on the pins on the shift drum. Classic symptom.

Check it out soon before the circlip holding the detent plate on falls off. If you do a rudimentary search, you'll find scads of information on the subject.

This sounds similar to the issue I have with my tranny. I had a complete rebuild and now the bike shifts fine but the shift lever gets stuck. Checkout this video I posted of my bike, and let me know if you have the same issue.

I have the same issue with my 98 S3 as shown on the youtube link. Do you know what the solution is? I haven't pulled the case yet.

Thanks for the advise. It will probably be the middle of next week before I can open up the primary.

Hey DJ a very good point. Followup to a question and the ultimate fix should be a requirement. And I know sometimes the proper fix may take awhile especially over winter where you can not ride for a while. And sometimes you forget where you posted it.

I had the same problem after changing the chain tensioner. It turned out that Buell's lack of QC made them sell me a primary gasket thinner than that before and in sequence blocking the shift lever by not leaving any axial play. I solved this by milling away a 1/10 mm from the stop face inside the primary cover. No problem any more even when fully warmed up.

Regards,
Gunter

I still haven't had a chance to pull the case. When I do, I will post a follow up.
Thanks

This may sound dumb, but check to see if your shift linkage is hitting the frame. My linkage has so much slop in it that you can see where the upper rear pivot is taking the paint off of the frame. I made up a very thin nylon washer to take out the slop, but the dealership did not put it back in when they repaired my clutch. I'll make up a new on over the winter.

I opened it up and pulled the primary chain off. I expected to see the detent plate loose, but everything appears to be okay.

Did you ever find the solution to this issue? I have the same problem on a 04 XB12R?

Turned out my Primary cover was too tight, loosened it up, re torqued it down and corrected the issue and is now shifting just like new...
