I just bought a 97 m2 it has a lot of engine work done and I want to protect it. Just wondering what brand and viscosity oil to use in the engine and the primary, preferably fully synthetic oils. | ||

I use Mobil1, 15-50 in both engine and tranny. Great product and it's readily available. Whatever you use, make sure you have have the correct API ratings (CF?) and don't overfill the oil! I'd recommend the use of the Dyna filter in place of the XL filter -- it's longer. | ||

I wonder why so many folks question the engineers who designed these transmissions, and try to out guess them about what lube to put into them? Why not just put the recommended Sporty transmission lube that was made for them specifically, and be done with it. Is trying to second guess (and that is all it is since there is no research to back it up) the engineers on this matter a really productive use of your time? Jimidan | ||

I may not know crap about motorcycle lubrication, but I know Sales and Marketing and Human Nature; with these things in mind, the fact that Harley Davidson makes money on the sale and use of their products would be a pretty good reason to recommend them for their motorcycles. | ||

True, but wouldn't it make sense to sell the best products for their motors? Also, there are several other companies that sell Sporty Tranny lube, that are specifically for that purpose. Why try to second guess with all of these non-specific products, when there is something that was made for that use only? That really was my point. I don't know squat about the science behind them either, except that friction modifiers that are in most motor oils are hell on clutches. I have never heard of someone having a problem with using good old Sporty tranny oil, whether it be HD brand or some other, like Rev Tec. Has any body else? jimdan | ||

Maybe we put other fluids in them because some of us are Engineers and have done research on said matters? You bring up a good point, i.e., if you stray away from "manufacturers recommendation" that you are taking a risk. By doing the proper research you mitigate the risk and find that there are better products than what the factory suggested. I find that to be the case with Mobil1 motor oil. As on any forum, let the buyer beware. | ||

My M2 has some heavy engine modifications as well and I have been running 20w50 fully synthetic, both HD brand and Mobil 1 and in the primary as well. Seems to have worked pretty well. Last time I changed the oil, I put a dyna filter on there and it seems to run a little bit cooler (digital temp gauge)...seemed like a good idea for the summer...Good Luck! |
