Y'all would sure make it easier on yourselves if you just give in now and come around to the American way of thinking

BTW ... I know I sound like a broken record ... but torque by itself is not a performance metric. It's possible to make a million foot/lbs of torque (or newton-meters if you will) and have no performance at all. It matters not how hard you're pushing, if you're pushing slowly. Hell, I can make a million foot/lbs of torque with a battery powered drill motor if I apply enough gear reduction. It'd move awfully slow though. Torque is only meaningful for performance when you consider it in conjunction with how fast (rpm) you can generate that torque. The metric that gives the combination of torque and rpm is horsepower. When we talk of high torque from these bikes, really all we're saying is that they make their power without turning much rpm. BFD.

Dave's S2

Unbeknownst to me until I saw this bike, a stock '95 S2 7-pin module kicks in a buttload of retard (another 'merican measurement unit) at 5300rpm or so, and then has a hard limiter at about 6200rpm. We swapped on another '95S2 module and it did the same thing. Then I stuck on a Screaming Beagle Selectable job (relabeled Dyna 2000) and got the blue pull. That pull is curve 4, we tried all 4 and 4 was the best. The fact that it's better even below the limiter suggests that the timing isn't right with the stock piece, too.

Example: The motor that turns the Space Needle in Seattle. 77,000 ft/lbs of torque & 0.5 Horsepower.

I am uncertain if it's ever been raced.

I'm sure with a race ecm we could get the rpms up on the Space Needle and get a few more ponies from it.
Please note a "buttload" is notated Bland is equal to SL B
What Aaron is showing in the chart was noticeable SOTP, but in normal riding I don't spend a lot of time over 5K, and hadn't paid much attention to it. At elevation on Friday's ride, I had to keep the revs up over 4k to make any power, and it became very noticeable. I'm going to switch out the module with an SE over the winter, and judging from the chart I might want to switch out the cams with some Lightning units.

And I would argue that peak horsepower is just as useless a figure as torque... unless you are trying to set landspeed records :)

Rather, for a street bike anyway, it is the power curve across the entire comfortable RPM range of the engine.

A 600 cc inline four that produces 85 horses feels totally different then my long stroke tube framed Buell producing 85 horses... so much so that it seems silly to even compare the two bikes.

But every time I try to bring it up, it seems to require a three hour physics and calculus lesson to actually get all the details across. So I just say "yeah, it lacks top end power but has great low end torque", and people tend to understand what I mean (even though what I said is mainly meaningless).

(note that we didn't bother to troubleshoot the HyperCharger, it may have been blocking the bowl vent)

5" Supertrapp (Automotive, not all that many disks but I didn't count them) vs Stainless Specialties 'glasspack contruction (19" over all length, 2.5" inlet/inner core, 4" body 3" outlet)
98 S1WL, Supertrap vs Stainless Specialties

99 S3T vs 98 S1WL
Both have modified air cleaner (gutted stock w/K&N vs Race kit), race ignition, race header, and a 'glass pack muffler (WestTek vs Stainless).
They were run on different dyno's (same make/model) on different days (S3 was on a much hotter day) at different altitudes (S1 was not jetted for its altitude).
S3 has Nallin Stage 1 heads.
S1 vs S3
And yes they feel very similar, but the S3 walks away top-end.

Aaron.. was that mainly a result of jetting, or did the timing get played with to get that 10 (!) hp boost? (or was it mainly just the forcewinder vent thing messing him up)

It was entirely the Forcewinder vent and subsequent jetting corrections. The timing, which was still right where the factory put it, was spot on.

The a/f curve going leaner at high rpm like that *could* indicate a bowl vent issue, or possibly just a really fat needle. I'd sure do some pulls without the air cleaner on there and see what it does.

soon after i bought the forcewinder i read about the bowlvent issue(thanks aron & bwb)and ported it out a little,after this kind of disapointing dyno run i decided to open it up a little more and i cut a matching opening in the carb bracket to open up the space a little more,i also noticed that they had the fuel line kind of pinched between the carb and head so i put on a new fuel line and routed it differnetly,i want to bring it in for some more runs but it might wait till spring,winter sucks.

I recently dynoed my S1 with a load of extra disks on my 'Trapp...from 15 to 22. I have no scanner here so I'll break it down. It gained 1 peak HP and 2 peak ft-lbs of torque...but that was all moved further down the rev range. In torque I lost about 10 ft-lbs on the low end and gained that couple in the mid rpm range. The HP dropped off a little later than before...all in all the power feels more progressive...meaning I have to rev higher and slip the clutch to make hard launches...and wheelies happen full song now so the wheel comes up frighteningly fast...so I don't do them very often anymore.

My bike is basically stock with carb mods, race system with a Supertrapp, and an S&S airfilter.

I'm going back to my 15 disc stoplight/wheelie power today. There's so many stop lights here that I must make use of the big fat low end torque.

I'm done with chassis mods to this bike...so when I can afford it...good things will happen to this engine

I had occassion to be generating this chart today and I found it interesting and I thought I'd share it, FWIW ...

Justin's M2

These are 3 different dyno pulls on the same '99 M2. The blue was in March of last year, I believe he had a Daytona Boss on the stock header at the time. The red pull was in April, after he had installed some Lightning cams, no other changes. The green pull was in September, after he had installed a Force exhaust, again with no other changes.

Contrast that result with how the Force pipe affected a different M2, this one a 2000 model with stock cams in it:



Blue is a Vance and Hines pipe, red is a Force pipe. He got the opposite result!

Just an example of how important it is to match components to each other.
