I was reading in several auto forums that Mobil 75/90 and simular brands should not be used in any manual trannys that have yellow metals/brass in them because of sulfer type content found in the oils additives - why the funny smell when changing - so does the Buell tranny have any yellow alloy bearings, etc.?

Well, I don't know about any yellow metals, but there are stator wires. I seemed to have read, too, that the sulfur content can be damaging to the protective wire coating, which can eventually lead to exposed wires, which can lead to th grounding out of the stator, which seems to be the most common reason for bad stators. Doesn't HD have a new synthetic primary fluid?

M1 says right on their website to 'NOT use the gear oil in transmissions where engine oil is recommended.

I am planning to change next week to Red Line 20W-50 for the trans.

M1 15W-50 in the engine.

Redline e-mailed me (11/2002) and advised me to use Red Line 75w90 gear oil which I used in my 1984 Sportster (since 1991) and am still using in my Blast. I'd double check with Redline on using 20w-50 motor oil instead of gear oil in the primary.

Yes, HD synthetic engine oil is for the engine and primary.

And (of course) Redline heavy shockproof gear oil is only good in big twin trannies (not the primary). Very good stuff.

Not sure why the RED lINE would not be better than HD in the primary?

I'm confused! I like Redline better than anything else. I would just check with Redline whether they recommend gear oil or engine oil for the primary/trans.

75w-90 Redline gear oil is okay in the primary/trans (Buell/XL). The Redline heavy shockproof gear oil (big difference between it and 75w-90) will gum up the clutch plates.

Redline Shockproof will leave a "plastic-like" residue under the needle bearings in the tranny. Since bearings prefer oil, I stopped using Shockproof. M1 15w-50 has worked excellent for me.
