On the way to work this morning, I noticed that my rear header was glowing at the elbow, just as it exits the head. Either I haven't noticed before (because I've never looked at it in the dark) or it is a new problem.

D&D header and can,
race ECM
K&N filter in gutted airbox
30K miles on motor
original O2 sensor
Redline 20W50
Sportrans
I have replaced the intake gaskets with the new kind.
I was doing between 65 and 75.
The check engine light never came on, so I have a hard time believing it was a lean condition, or at least one that the ECM couldn't correct, as I was running closed loop.

Anybody else's doing this? Is this normal? Am I going to hole a piston? I can only imagine what my exhaust valve must have looked like. I'm sure the bend in the pipe makes it hot, but damn, it was cherry red.

Hootowl... Mine did that right after I had pulled the headers and put in new gaskets (and probably a non trivial amount of penetrating oil).

Never noticed if it did it again after burning all that junk off... it scared the crap out of me also when I saw it...

Hootowl: First hand information: No, third or more- hand in fact: But it IS normal.
Bike, that was send to the factory for it, was scrutinized and everything was perfect, so some bright mind got the idea to turn the lights off in the factory and try another X1: Red hot headers at the exhaust port.
Hans.

Thanks Hans. Guess I don't need to carry a lighter in my tank bag anymore.

I recently changed to a Force pipe and intake. The pipe doesn't glow but the rear cylinder and pipe is cooking my leg. Does anyone have any idea what could be going on? I'm pretty sure the crush gasket went in straight so I don't think that it is an obstruction. It never ran that hot with the Buell header.

Lads,

Noticed the same thing on my dead stock and sweetly running '98 S3T on a warm summer evening a few months ago. Was running on an expressway at a steady state 4k (140~150 km/hr). I'm guessing it's normal.

Now the weather's cooler it doesn't happen. These bikes seem pretty "ambient involved".

Love 'em anyway....

best,
Lornce
