Hey guys,
This being my first Buell, I thought I'd ask the group;

I'm looking for some advice on how to hardwire a GPS to the bike.

Most other (Japanese and German) bikes I've owned, there was either already some sort of factory aux switched power outlet or, if not, I would install a fuse block wired off the battery.

What options exist with the Buell? Are there any aux power wires? Fuses? Or is it better to just go with a fuse block?

At some later date I may hook up some additional lighting, and a comm system also.

TIA

Cheers
-Jack

On my M2 I wired in a cigarette lighter socket for a GPS receiver and a PDA and attached that to the frame (with cable ties) behind the cover by my right knee.

I wired the socket to a wire that is hot when the ignition is in the intermediate "Parking" position so it goes off when I turn the ignition off.

Jack,
The XB12X has those 2 power outlets and they are switched. Course, do you want the GPS going off everytime you shut the bike off? I noticed 'acc' and 'aux' fuses in the fuse box, I'll eventually figure out what each powers.
I have an XB12X and found the need for a set of driving lights. Thus, a 6 position marine fuse block is going under the seat, I'm replacing the dash power outlet with the switch for the lights. Heated clothing plug, GPS power, etc will come off the marine fuse block giving a constant 'hot' feed. She's going in for the 1K service Sun and mods will start once she's back.

Thanks Guys.
I don't want to use the power outlets for the GPS - I have a Touratech mount with an integrated power lead that works best when hardwired.

I had installed, on my last bike (VStrom), a BSS Marine Fuse box which I will probably install on the Uly - under the seat. As far as the GPS power is concerned, I prefer it too be hot when the bike is switched off - often, for recording/statistical purposes, I want to be able to record stopped time.

Thanks again for your help - looks like I have my weekend project set

Cheers

I bet the XB12X has that same "third headlight" the 9s models have. This is a euro only socket that gets 12V to a little bulb (like a running light) that you can force to be left on with the key out of the ignition and the steering locked. I slapped one in there so that if I have to park in a lot when it is pitch black with a high probability of drunks around, I can leave the bike lit up without a key in it. It's also a good way to hear the wal-mart loudspeaker talk about "blue motorcycles in the parking lot with lights on" : )

Anyway, that wire is probably in there, hot, and has flexible switching already built into your ignition switch. Cut it, and wire directly into that. It should be easy to get at from behind the headlight assembly.

Might be easier to just add a fused line directly off the battery terminals though, that's what I did for my Cyclone for my GPS. I wanted unswitched as well.

I'm sure a gps won't draw much current, but I've been careful to protect the factory wiring from my accessories.

I've had good luck using an automotive relay triggered by the headlight. It is wired up such that power supplied to the accessories has its own circuit back to the battery and its own fuse. The coil on the relay draws little current and tying it into the headlight ensures that my heated grips, heated seat, or XM radio are only on when the ignition is on.

I've ordered the service manual - hopefully it has a decent wiring diagram included so I can look for that euro socket/wire - sounds like it might do the trick.

Yep the service and parts manuals are on my list.
I'm a firm believer in not messing with the factory wiring, thus an aux fuse block was ordered today.
I'll also get a factory power outlet, cut the outlet off and have a clean way to tap a switched circuit (just for the driving lights). The rest are constant hot leads from the aux fuse block. Gotta keep the fingers warm on those early morning commutes.

"Course, do you want the GPS going off every time you shut the bike off?"

I do, to protect the battery. But I'm using a PDA in a map case on the tank. That runs off of its own internal battery when I shut the ignition off.

The GPS receiver goes off but it will have a warm fix within 15 seconds when I power it back on. A lot of this boils down to what you have and how you want to use it.

I turn the PDA off and slip it in my pocket if that seems appropriate when I park.

I have not done any cold weather riding yet, not sure if I will or not. I have an electric vest and will probably want to add handwarmers if I do any cold weather riding. At that point I'm going to set up something with more fuses and relays for switching the higher draw stuff.

Got it all setup this evening. Installed a BSS marine fuse box. The picture doesn't show it but I have a relay installed, and switched power is taken from the rear accessory plug.

The only thing hooked up at the moment is the GPS, but there are plenty of spare terminals left.

I may go back and clean up the wiring a bit more, but otherwise, it's working like a charm!

Jack,
Is that a Blue Seas 5025 fuse block?
I ordered one for my bike. It looks like it fits well enough to still keep the lock, manual, etc under the seat.

2hogs,
Yes it is (5025, 6 position with ground).
The unit is mounted to the tray with velcro. Also, for the switched power, can't see it in the picture but I simply wired up an accessory plug up to the fuse box, and plugged it into the socket - works like a charm, and, other than taking main power from the battery, I haven't touched the bikes electrical system.

Cheers

Jack,
Cool. My driving lights arrived today. Course, I had to drop the bike off for the 1K service. So the fun begins tomorrow. The 5025 should be in later this week, then I can actually turn on and aim the lights.
