I noticed the new helmet lock Buell put on the XB12X and thought that's just the ticket for my Firebolt. I fabricated the mounting bracket out of a piece of stainless steel i picked up at the hardware store and ordered the lock from Daves. All that is left is taking the lock in to a locksmith to get it keyed to my bikes ignition key.

how'd ya fab using the SS?

I've found it VERY difficult to drill or cut SS - why did you choose SS over plain steel?

Art, Thanks!

Curt, I used stainless because I didn't want to deal with any future rust issues and I didn't feel aluminum was stiff enough (.064 is what the hardware store had) although it would probably been just fine. The stainless is .112. As for fabricating I just used a metal cutting circular saw, bench grinder, file, vise and hand drill.

Ryan, I don't know that I have ever seen what kind of structure is under the seat on the S models. Is there some kind of subframe like on the Firebolts? I cut a slot in the plastic under tail piece to get to the subframe as a mounting point as you can see in the first photo.

I think the subframe is different. Hmmm.. Guess I'll have to fabricate it.

That looks great.....but if your traveling long distance and have the side saddle bags on your firebolt XB......it covers it up....?

oooohh, I want one! So did you have to drill into the tail section? I would assume, but that never works out for me. What was your cost minus the labor?

Drilled two holes in subframe, and used a die grinder with a rotory rasp to cut slot in the plastic undertail

The lock was $47 from Daves, the sheetmetal & screws a few bucks at the hardware store, and $12 at the locksmith to get the helmet lock re-keyed to my ignition key.

Sweet rig! I have a firebolt and a ulysses, and I'd thought about what a good addition that was to the X. Nice to see there are ways to make it work on both bikes. I'm also thinking about adding a second one to the uly.

BTW
The HD locks I posted, were $19 each
So $38 total
No fabrication needed.

just some notes for comparison.
