I'm tearing in to my XB since it developed a case of Statoritis at 5200 miles.

I know the manual says to pull off the engine sprocket and clutch as a unit, but is possible to not pull the clutch off and just get the sprocket off? I'm hoping that there is enough slack and side deflection available in the chain to just pull off the sprocket.

Of course I'm asking because I don't the special Clutch Removal Tools that the manual says must be used. So if the clutch must indeed come off is there some other way to do that without the specified tool?

I know the main clutch nut is reverse thread, but is the nut that holds the engine sprocket on reverse thread as well?

My special tool is a short open end wrench that acts the same way. (8-10mm I think) Getting them off is a snap with a pneumatic impact wrench.

Clutch side may have left hand threads

The nut that holds the engine sprocket on is standard thread. Pull off the engine sprocket and clutch as a unit, disassembly of the clutch is not necessary, no special tools needed.

Engine nut normal thread.Special removal tool is nothing more than a darn wheel chock for the primary.I use a piece of scrap aluminum I had laying around,just happened to fit as is.All you need is something to wedge the gears so you can apply enough force to undo the big azz nuts.

I don't see a nut in the center of the clutch, I just see the small, maybe 1/4" diameter threaded clutch adjuster stud. If I take out the visible snap ring does that release the stud and mount in the center that I'm seeing and then expose the main Clutch Nut behind it?

My confusion is due to the fact that the XB manual shows complete disassembly of the clutch to access the nut that holds the clutch basket on. The special tool that the manual shows is similar in design to a puller but it appears what it does is preload the clutch springs so you can begin to disassemble the clutch by pulling out the stuff in the center to get to the Big Nut.

Yeah you got it. Take the snap ring off and it'll expose the nut. Well..at least on a tuber. I am not sure of an XB. I'll defer to those who "know".
