I need some help with application procedures for painting the frame, swingarm, forks, and trees of my City X. Do I have to purchase a spray type applicator? Would the Carbon Black look the best with the black bodywork or is there another black that would be better/cheaper. I probably won't be breaking the whole bike down, just masking a lot. Also, a question about painting the forks...is this possible? The shiny stuff might pose a bit of a problem, no? Any insight into this would be appreciated. Thanks in advance. | ||

As far as painting the forks... I'd have them hard anodized. Of course, that would require dis assembly of the forks but the spring compression tool is only ~30 from American Sport Bike. | ||

As far as painting everything... I would use a spray can of Krylon flat black. I might even mask for over-spray. I'm a bit of a redneck that way... One time I spray painted my buddies 1971 Impala flat black, with Chinese red wheels (he dared me too). I didn't bother to mask anything, or even clean off the bird crap first. Funny thing, it looked SO MUCH BETTER than the rusting blue paint it started with. He wasn't fond of the red wheels though. | ||

Krylon flat black. The great thing about flat black is that you can touch it up so easily. My bike looks straight out of madmax. I painted everything except the seat, pipes, jugs, swingarm and forks. It aint super pretty, but everyone comments on how baddass it looks, and that the paint kindof matches the attitude of the bike. I'll update my photo soon, since I've painted a lot more the last few weeks. | ||

Suprised you didn't ask the AZ resident Paint Meister with the Red and Black 12R...I was happy with the Krylon Fusion for the parts I have painted so far. | ||

Sorry Mikel, didn't know you were an arteest!! I was thinking of starting out doing the passenger peg hangers first to see if I like it. If not I'll just leave em off. | ||

I have done quite a bit of rattle can work on my dear " Ol' Yaller" I find that removing small parts, and baking them for a couple of hours a 200º in my home oven improves the gloss, and really hardens the paint which never seems to harden very well with out heating. I sand with 180, prime, bake, sand with 220, paint, bake, two or three coats really does it. | ||

Monorad, Nice looking bike. When you painted the subframe, did you just mask everything? Or did you disassemble to paint? I am about to have a friend do the airbox cover and bug smasher from my cityX for me. Gloss black with a slightly off center flat black or dark blue racing stripe. I was going to do the sub frame when I cut off the pasta strainer. | ||

MonoRad How well has that held up? I dont mind occasional touchups and was thinking of doing the same thing. The flat black tends to match the Buell black engine parts the best and gives it the coolest streetfighter look |
