I have always said that I have been stranded on many bikes but never on either one of my Buells. Despite some problems I had with them, they always got me back home. That changed tonight. I went out riding and stopped for a while to talk to some other riders at a popular spot for bikes. When I went to leave I turned on the key and noticed something strange. The whining I am used to hearing from the fuel pump wasnt there. Also the head lights didnt come on. When I hit the starter button nothing happened either. All the gauges lit up and the blinkers and tail light worked. I had to get a ride home to get my trailer and drove back to pick up my bike.

So what would cause the head lights not to come on, the fuel pump not to come on and the starter not to work but allow the blinkers, tail lights and horn to work?

Hi,

My first thought is the kill switch next to your right thumb. Flip it on and off a couple times, then turn on the key, flip the kill switch to on and see if she comes to life. If not, get out your manual and start troubleshooting.

Keyswitch fuse
key switch
keyswitch relay
ignition fuse
kill switch
ignition relay
sidestand switch

(in that order) all have to work in order to provide power to:

both injectors
ignition coil
fuel pump
VSS
ECM
low beam

If one doesn't have power, none will have power. Do you want to troubleshoot a little? All you need is a voltmeter and I'll talk you through the rest...

BTW: You did check the fuses, right? Oh, and I see by your profile you can forget about the sidestand switch...

Thanks for the help guys. Yup I checked the fuses first. I decided since it is still under warranty and the shop is open on Sunday, I would let the dealer handle it.

Tomzweifel:Why did you say "you can forget about the sidestand switch..."

I just looked at my profile and realized there isnt anything in it.......lol.

I'll let everyone know what they find when I get it back (Hopefully in time to take it with me to VIR).

Because your profile says you have an '04, and I don't think they have sidestand switches.

My money's on the ignition relay.

I wonder if the relays are even under warranty or if the are considered consumable like fuses?

Tomzweifel: Good thing I didnt take that bet. I just got off the phone and it was the ignition relay. You are the man.

Still no word on if that part falls under warranty

The shop has the part in-stock and it will be done in a few minutes. So I am going to pick it up at lunch

Thanks everyone for the help

there is a nice little hole in fusebox for the spare relay. got mine for 5 bucks, same part fits ducati monster. list of spares i carry under seat at all times:
tailight bulb, 1157
headlight bulb, H7
master link, 530 X-ring
Ignition relay
several fuses
small roll of E-tape
tire pressure guage
8 inch adjustable wrensch, wedged under battery(been there for 15,000 miles, stays put, and is the smallest tool capable of removing rear axle)
stock little tool bag, with additional allen wrenches and torx wrenches packed in.
insurance card, registration.
behind the fly screen, i wedged in a tire repair-plug kit.

if your ignition relay ever quits again, just swap it for the start relay, they are identical. swap relays, bump start, and ride.

Fullpower:
Thanks for the tips. I wish I had known about swapping relays on Saturday night. Would have saved me a lot of trouble.
