After work Friday I decide to take the long way home so I can take in some twisties. Two thirds of the way through my run and just starting to lean into another corner the bike loses power and the dash lights come on I pull in the clutch thinking my low fuel light came on in the previous corner and maybe the motor just sucked some air and I try to restart but nothing happens so I coast to a stop and try again this time turning the key to off and then back on and press the kill switch to the run position and the speedo and tach needles do there normal sweep but the fuel pump doesn't make it's usual wine and the check engine light does not come on either. WTF I look at the fuses and find the ignition fuse is blown so I put in the spare and try to restart and the spare fuse blows when I press the the kill button from off to the run position. Now I check the relays for proper seating and move one of the other 15amp fuses to the ignition spot and try another restart and the same thing happens, instant blown fuse. I do some wire wiggling and move another 15amp fuse and try yet another restart and my last 15amp fuse blows instantly. The mighty XB is dead. Today I get the bike home and with the help of some BadWeb research I start looking for chaffed wires and not finding any I start to wiggle some other wires while I pop in some more fuses and they all blow as quickly as I can push the kill to run button. I read a number of posts about the speed sensor causing blown fuses so I do a little disassembly so I can disconnect the speed sensors connector pop in yet another fuse hit the run button and all is good the fuel pump makes it's wine the check engine light light comes on for it's initial check then go's out like normal and I hit the starter and the XB is alive again. I do another quick check while the bike is running and reconnect the speed sensor and the bike dies and the ignition fuse is blown again. I disconnect the speed sensor again replace the fuse and ride to the local Harley/Buell dealer and buy a new speed sensor and for the hell of it ask the service dept how much it would be to R&R the sensor and they tell me $120.00 I say no thanks, I had already taken the sensor out and reinstalled it during my investigation and it didn't even take 15 minutes. The new sensor has a nice service loop with a clip on it unlike the original with the wires bent very sharply as it exits the sensor. Prior to this incident the speedo has never had a malfunction indicating a potential problem. To put an end to the long story all is well with the new sensor installed. Thanks to the people of BadWeb that had posted this problem and the fix.

Thank you for the trouble shooting step. Helpful. You wouldn't happen to have taken pic. of the old and new sensor, would you?
