Bomber: Nice shoes. Florshiems, right? Nice as they are (and they really are nice), I like the tool better. I'm gonna have to make myself one, but in steel rather than alloy. Dunno how you're going to make the right leg adjustable in two dimensions, as Henrik suggests. Maybe multiple holes through which the beam can be slid? Probably have to do that on both legs...
Anyway, good going!

Adjustment in 2 dimensions: Rather than sliding the beam through the right leg, how about making a metal block with two perpendicular holes: one for the beam and one for the right leg. Also in the block, make threaded holes for locking screws to hold beam and right leg in place.

yes, indeedy . . .florsheims they are . . .. . .er, not . . . . . .15 year old boat shoes with so muych swarf embeded in soles they are banished fomr the house forever!

the skinny part of the legs are a tight slip-fit into the swingarm bolt (left) and axle (right). The cones come not quite to a point, making this puppy work nicely on the only other self-mobile scoot I know . .. .my '80 SR500 . . . . . I DO like Henrik's idea about adjustability on two dimensions, though . . . .

hmm, if I apply myself, I'll be able to take a 15-minute job in alloy, use stainless instead, make everything adjustable in four dimensions (so I can send it back to my racing days {when my hair was a different color}), and spend a week or so on it . . . .seriously, thanks for the ideas, gents . . . .

now I just gotta find two strong, straight pieces to lay on either side of the rear wheel to check the lignment of the engine/swingarm assembly .. . .suggestions, anyone?

Bomber: I used to use a long piece of nylon cord that had some elasticity to it. I just stretched it around the front of the front tire and the rear of the rear tire and duct-taped it to the tires so it wouldn't slip. Pulled tight enough, it's as straight a line as you can get. Measure between the strings and each side of the rear of the front rim to ensure that your front tire is pointed dead straight ahead, then take any measurements you want off the strings. It's the Ocam's Razor approach - simple.

Bomber,
Excuse the quick drawing.
I use a couple of Rocket's Saab repair tools (bricks) with some line cord tied to them and wrapped around the rear wheel. When the distances to the front rim at A, B, C & D are equal from the string, then the wheels are aligned.

How do I lower a 02 X1! I have a friend who loves Buells. She bought a White 02 X1..with a promise from the salesjerk that Wes Tec has a lowering kit. She is very short...as she puts it,"I have made 3 payments and fallen over just as many times when I come to a stop!" The new shock is shorter so it uses the 02 front mount so I can't suggest the ASB lowering kit. The company is AZ offered an extension to the early shocks but they have seem to go belly up. Some one suggested a penske shock since it is adustable..But the cost of a New shock on top of the Sticker shock, Oh No! Yes I know about sliding the front forks up the trees...but first I have to lower the rear. Some say take padding out of the X1 seat..PLEASE it is already HARD to live with! I know some of the smartest Buell riders are on this site..so put your heads together and help me keep this gal upright on her Buell...

Michael:
First of all get her on the Buell P&A seat. That will gain her about an inch in height and it is also narrower. That will help a lot.
Next you can try the stock shock with the old mount. That will buy her another 3/4". Caution this method also looses wheel travel but I'll bet she is on the petite side and won't have to worry about bottoming.
If this all fails Works Performance can make you a shock whatever length you need for a MUCH more reasonable $'s than the Penske and it is meant for the road. If you need some more info or help on this drop me a line.

My nuts are rusting! No,no, not those nuts! My axle nuts. I have been looking for some in stainless here in St.Louis but no luck. Contacted ASB and they dont stock such an item except the ones that come with the ti axles. Big $$$$$$. Have any of you pikers looked for alternate nuts; stainless, chrome, etc and had any luck?

Has anyone been able to locate damper rod parts used on 95/96 S2&T's, 96/97 S1 and S3's. Buell S2's use the WP roma front forks, but the damper rods are the same in the later forks. What I'm needing is the top bumper, oil control ring, and the seal around the oil control ring. Nine times out of ten, you can be sure that if your forks need service, you will probably need these parts.I have White Bros' part numbers for the White Power forks, but White Bros' won't sell me these. Top Bumper 4054.487
Oil control ring 4054.848
"O" ring 4054.849
Buell does not have these parts, nore can I get these through KTM who now ownes WP. No dealer in Canada has these, but I have'nt tried the US. Buell used to offer the damper rod assembly, 46723-94Y, but this is now obsolete. Buell also did a US dealer search for the replacement rod, but also had no luck. If anyone can assist, I'd appreciate your help on the discusion board.

Gootch: my best suggestion is to contact one of the suspension shops and see if they carry either direct replacement parts or something from different brand forks that might fit.

I've had good luck with Traxxion Dynamics for all regular suspension work:

Gootch:

I know what you are going through. A while back my forks began to bottom out on minor bups. Turns out the tiny coil spring holding the valve plates fatigued and was letting the oil through w/o much resisitance. When I went to HD the parts book states "there are no serviceable parts in the cartridge assembly". Ended up spending 125 $'s for a few little parts from the gold valve people and a video of another fork that did not help me much. The gold valve works well but I would have preferred to have spent 10 cents on a sping.

Will anything bad happen if ATF fluid is used in WP forks? I got in a hurry replacing my S2 fork seals Sunday, and wanting to ride. I had no suitable fork oil but did have a couple of quarts of Delron III. The bike rides and feels great, but I'm wondering if increased wear or anything else might occur.

TIA

Has anyone taken apart a 2001 Showa shock. I am looking for the spring dimensions (length, ID & OD)
I guess it would be too much to ask if anyone knew the stock spring rate for a M2.

Hi,

I have been told today by BMC that the upper fork bushings are so durable that they are not available, so I guess the 10K fork service is BS.

Hi,
As I said in another area, I was standing right in front of the sales girl while she talked to Buell. They said, "no one who owns an S3T is interested in performance and they do not make and will not make the factory race header to fit an S3T". However, this was a second call as I was attempting to buy all the parts that I THOUGHT I might need for my 10K service. I guess, (if you haven't figured it out by now) there isn't anyone within 200 miles of here that I am going to trust to take my bike apart (which by the way other than excessive oil in the air cleaner, and an excessive appetite for engine oil, and a mechanical noise that FREAKS ME OUT STILL) works and rides better than any other motorcycle I have owned or ridden. I intend to keep it that way and, if possible, improve it. ALL the Buell dealers that are available to me are very obviously Harley dealers first. And while some of them have been very helpful they just don't seem to get it. They don't have parts, they don't have knowledge and they just don't understand why I have the bike. I have resigned myself to having/riding/servicing a motorcycle that no one understands or loves but me. I depend on this forum - HEAVILY - for it is the only source that I have for practical and informed information. I have been a motorcycle rider since I was 10 - that's &*(#&^ years and have offered my assistance as a RAN. The "only Buell in Buffalo" is pretty damned accurate. I get more respect/help/interest in my bike at the local Kawasaki shop than I do at ANY of the so-called Buell dealers.

What else can I say?

To Blake:
The SIMPLE answer would be what's the part number for the upper DU bushings for a 98 S3T. The factory says there isn't one. If you can tell me what that number is you are doing better than the factory rep. And I would as sure as fire truck appreciate it `cause I don't want to be caught, with my bike COMPLETELY torn apart and have to wait 6, 8, 10 weeks for a $4 part.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

After havin trouble finding WP Roma 4054 parts, I contacted WP in Holland. They sent me a list of vendors in the US who carry these and I've orered through a company called Lideman Engineering. (White Bros' were'nt much help)
Steveb, tranny fluid is a bit heavy, S2's use WP 7 wieght and S1's use 5.
Oz666, upper fork bushings should be available, I'll look it up and give you a number. If not, I'll give Lideman's number, they had just about everthing I needed for my WP's except tubes, 1 to 2 months. If I happen to have them I'll be more than happy tp ship them to you.
Thanx Stuart

Oz666, you are 100% correct. The upper fork tube bushing is not listed in the parts catelog, only the lower(part#45811-94Y)It shows a quantity of 2 used, so there must be a difference. The 95/96 Buell S2 forks use the same lower bushing as the S1's and S3's and in the S2 catelog it lists #45851-94Y as the upper bushing. The forks are similar except the dampening adjustment, so I'm sure this will work. Sorry, I dont have these in stock, but have your Buell dealer order them in.
I have checked with my tech, he's sure they are the same aswell. If you have no luck with your dealer, I'll order it for you, or contact

Oz666, try the upper fork bushing from the 95/96 S2. The S2's use the similar forks as the S1's and S3's except the dampening is different. If you check, you'll notice the lower bushings are the same part for all WP forks, and the upper bushing should be aswell. I've checked with my tech, and he's told me that they'll work. I'm at home without a parts book, but if you need, I'll give you the number. I'll even ship them to you or I'll give you Lindeman Engineering's number and they'll have everthing.

Has anyone tried the Race Tech Gold Valves for the conventional M2 forks? I have a '98 M2 that works great on smooth roads, but the front end is harsh on most of the two lane stuff here in the Midwest. It'd be great to get some input on how they work and how hard they were to install before dropping any coin on a set.

Thanks!
