Could the KC MOB gang who was going to meet up with me for the Ride Across America next Tuesday ping me an email or give me a call (717-634-6118) when you guys get a chance? I don't have access to my regular email now that I'm in CA. Tripper had bounced a few emails my way, and I cannot remember the names of the guys I was to meet.
Thanks a ton,
Alex

My front engine mount broke, also broke the bolt off inside the head, &^%@#$^**&

Thank you KC division of MoDOT & KCMO street dept. One too many hidden manhole covers bounced off of or one of so many other suspension eaters on our local roads.

Rusty the broken front bolt and or front mount are not uncommon problems with the tubers. They are especially common if you have changed the rear isolators and did not properly support the engine during the job. Usually wont happen a second time once it is fixed, an easy out or a reverse cut drillbit takes it out fairly easy and sometimes you can do it with the mount in place.

Rusty,

I have a used mount off my S3T for sale. I also have those special Buell mounting bolts. Let me know if you want to buy either of them.

Mount and new bolts--$25 + shipping

I just disassembled the bike enough to get the hanger off, broken bracket gouged my rocker cover.
Looks like crap now, oh well, it will still work.
I will put in all new bolts and such I ordered from Worth. $45 and wait for them to get here.
Good opportunity to clean up and seal up the temp sensor connection from rain water.

Rusty,

Been trhere done that! not a bad repair. sounds like you are headed in the right direction. One thing that I did prior to taking out the old bracket was that I put the bike on stands and put a floor jack under the motor. Then I just simply raised the motor right back in place when I put it back together. Hardest part of the job, which included removing the sheared bolt from the engine, was getting a torque wrench on the hanger bolt. good luck! hope you get her back together!

Tripper,

If he hasn't heard anything out of the STL guys, ship him this way. We are about the same amount of distance from his next stop and a shorter trip than KC to STL. Heather and I will put him up for the night. I can be reached at 217-222-2412.

If my son asks... yes someone really stole his piggie bank! If he was really wanting the contents... he would not have "abandon" it at my house. Someday he will learn!!!

Anyway... I gassed up the BMW and did not have to get a second mortgage to do so. The clerk was not happy to see $8.60 cents in pennies & nickels. ...and I was told to never do that again. Right... like my son will ever "abandon" his piggie bank at my house again!

With gas, a rain suit, 8 cans of soup, and 14 changes of clothing, a compass and a GPS, I proceeded to meet Scott and his posse for his monthly ride. The last one I went on I was too hot, then too cold, then rained on, then hailed on, and always half lost. The ride I went on following that was with Paul & Tripper and Tripper wanted to storm chase, get us rained on, then try and get us arrested trying to enter Fort Leavenworth, after almost getting cut in half by a brush hog in my lane as I topped a hill. So... I may be old, but I try to learn from previous experiences.

But... I was ready for anything on this ride. Don't take this wrong... I enjoyed the rides I referred to above, I just was not mentally prepared or logistically supplied.

Today... Mr & Mrs Scott was there, a Gold Wing, a couple of cruisers, a ratty looking old BMW (me) and Bill, Keith and Richie.

We rode about 110 miles give or take, and it was not necessary for me to stop for gas. I had noticed the BMW was not getting the mileage it used to, way less than the 150+- before the low fuel light goes on. Maybe it had to do with my right boot smelling like $2.00 a gallon gas. Then again maybe that was caused by the line from the fuel pump into the fuel injector system looking like one of those fountains on the Plaza. Loose hose clamps can cause boots to smell funny. But then again defective fuel filters can cause problems too.

Our trip had 4 halves. The first half was getting away from city traffic. The second half was some mild twisties into Leavenworth. As we left the staging area Richie and I took turns bring up the rear of the group. At least until he noticed we had hit the twisties. I am putting along behind the cruisers no place near the end of second gear or the speed limit, and I notice Richie had suddenly relocated to the front with Bill and Keith. It was about then I noticed the curvy road signs.

Not wanting to be left with the putt alongs... I zoomed up to the front just in time to brake hard for the first turn. So we were leaning right... then left... the right, then a little righter, then a ho bunch lefter... etc until we got to the military cemetery in Leavenworth. As Bill turned off to park and wait for those with a habit of lawfully obeying speed limit signs, he seem a bit surprised to see me shut the BMW off. He says "I wanna ride that!" So I say sure, figuring it will be at least another 15 minutes for the sane bunch on the ride to show up. He offers me his ride. I hate riding someone elses bike. Cause I just KNOW something will go wrong if I do. Before Bill can take it for a spin, the group shows up.

Anyway we are proceeding to the third half of the ride, and we are about half way to half way through that half when Bill wants to pull everyone over to look at a creek under a bridge. Or it might have been that his bike engine was no longer running. I get those two mixed up! So I just had to remind him about a dozen times... "Hey Dennis ride my bike!", like this was not planned to make me think I was the one who broke it!

Let me tell you about these chain auto stores. The key word is auto... because they don't sell spark plugs for a Yamaha 600 cc, and they don't sell fuel filters for bikes. I guess Bill was not specific enough when he asked for a fuel filter. He wanted one that would prevent crud from getting to the carb... not like the one he got that prevented gasoline from getting to the carb! SO... after giving Bill crap about getting me to ride the bike with the known fuel problem, Keith trouble shooting the problem and finding the "new" fuel filter was crap, and watching a 'Burial at sea" with the filter chucked into the previously noted creek... we were on our way. AND I was Sooooooo glad I did not ride Bills bike when offered.

The last half of the second half of the third half went half good, as we got to the last half of the trip. Until we ditched Scott half way to Parkville! So you have a line of bikes... Scott in the lead... the second bike takes a right turn on to a road after Scott passed it. Guess where the rest of the riders turn? That's correct... right to follow the second in line who turned right. At some point Scott noticed he was leading no one while he was half way to Parkville. I wonder if he was half confused as to wha happon???

Scott found the rest of us when we were half way through the second half of getting to Parkville... and we all arrived and even found parking... all in all not a half bad ride!

Digger... I'll tell Alex..

Here is the plan... Its a biggie

Alex is 30 miles east of Pueblo, CO for the evening, he is headed out tomorrow onto the great plains of Colorado & Kansas (Dodge City).

He'll be dodging tumble weeds... Tripper and I are leaving KC at 10 AM for Salina to meet Alex around 2-3pm.

If everything is good we are headed back probably arriving around sunset. I'm putting Alex up in Lees Summit. Alex will log about 650 miles.

Tuesday we will visit dealers and possibly the HD factory... Then Alex is headed to STL for the next day.

If anyone talks to Thunder & Tripper...

let them know...

Tomorrow (Tuesday) I will be off work. My step-daughter is having her tonsils out and Sharon wants me to go with them in the morning. SO... hit me on my cellular phone if you need some roadside assistance (trailer tools etc.) and let me know about the local festivities.

Just saw Jeff & Tripper & someone else (sorry couldn't tell) departing near Bill's house to I-35 to meet Alex. Was on my Lunch break and saw them at a stop light right before the hwy. Didn't look like Bill it was a red bike looked like. Tripper did the mandatory wheelie take off from the light! Right on!

Ride safe guys.

BUSTED! OK, now I remember which intersection we were at. I think that was Tripper, Jeff and Alex. We had lunch at Oklahoma Joe's, I headed home and they were off to have a tire put on Alex' bike as the Kansas flatlands have consumed his tire. The KC Central BRAG chapter donated our second Dunlop to the Ride Across North America.

Alex will be spending a second night at Jeffs house tonight. Descend on Jeffs house and bring your own soda.

We got the cooks tour of the HD plant this morning. First class treatment was offered us, thanx to Mary at BRAG.

Alex update...

After the tour of the Harley plant, Jeff and Alex did a stop at MidAmerica Power Sports Plus this afternoon and did the tour of the shop. By-the-way... the dyno is in and installation and training was in progress!! I was there this morning picking up spark plugs for the Yamaha race bike. The tire the club was scheduled to raffle off was donated to Alex as the tire he had was wearing much faster than he had anticipated.

After the tire was done by MidAmerica Power Sports Plus, Jeff and Alex stopped by the casa de bankrupt and caught me standing on my head next to the Toro lawn tractor hosing out the mower deck. Alex didn't mind the wet grass covered hand shake. I thought I'd have time to put the yard toys away. The main part of the tour was the bike shop and shooting bull for about a half hour. Alex looked fresh and in great spirits with his progress. He is about 1/3 of the way on his trip. It sounded like the evening was an exciting night of laundry and catching as much rest as possible before he moves on to St. Louis. I was very happy to meet Alex...
