Bishop, ride that way all the time. Tough schedule right now, but it should not be too long before we head out on the bikes again. Talked about tomorrow, but we did not get done with the honey-do list today so that may be off until I plug some holes in the walls.

Hey hey. I was wondering if anyone in the Central NC area is looking to swap their Lightning for my Firebolt gear. This would involve the triple trees, handlebars, everything in front of the forks the wiring harness, and the tails. Just tossing it out there since it is something I am looking to do, but it is almost too expensive if I were to ship all the parts around.

I have a black 09 12R, but I do not care what color your bike is.

For reference:

It appeared to be a piece of a wooden pallet. A better rider could have easily avoided it. I on the other hand watched helplessly as the bike rolled over it, nails and all.

I waited, expecting the feel the tires deflating. My mind gradually settled down, as the bike continued to ride normally. It was a good thing. I had packed an air pump, but nothing to actually plug a punctured tire. The irony of having just spent a good portion of my riding thinking about how to explain target fixation was not lost on me. Then I felt the back end start to wobble.

I pulled over, looked at the rear, and it was going flat quickly. This once would have brought me to the edge of despair. But I have met a lot of bad ass people on motorcycles over the years, and they have taught me these things are fixable. I still remember Mike Warren holding the air in my tire with his finger, as we tried to formulate "plan B" after "plan A" failed and used up all our CO2. And I've been following RV's Iron Butt rally stories, which are a testimony to getting things done.

I rode to the next exit, with the bike wobbling wildly, hoping against hope, that there would be an auto parts store at the bottom. No such store existed, so I looked around to see who's parking lot I wanted to break down in. I chose a Sheetz gas station.

Went inside to survey their selection of tire repair products. They had plug kits, for which I joyously paid $2.99. I took a coffee cup outside, filled it with the water intended for washing windshields, and went looking for the leak. I couldn't find it, so I put the pump on the tire, and pressurized it a bit. Then I could hear it leaking, I didn't even need the water. A nice puncture wound, with no residual nail.

I read the instructions on the plug kit: "Apply compound to tool, and use it as a probe to lubricate the hole." Yes, that's exactly what I thought too. So I liberally applied the compound, and stuck it in the hole. It went in easily, much easier than the car tires I have patched before. Then I treaded the rope through the tool, inserted it in the hole, pulled out the tool, and wow, I was done. This whole adventure had taken less than 30 minutes.

I got back on the bike, and rode another 120 miles into Atlanta, where I arrived right as the sun was setting. I figured by this time that the plug was good, and I was a happy camper again. I was feeling good, so I put another 100ish miles on, and am currently typing this from Opelika, AL. 530 miles today. Not bad considering I left at lunch.

I just woke up. : ) The nice thing about leaving ridiculously early, is I knocked out the almost 400 miles by 11:00 am. I'm in Slidell, LA, about 3 miles from Mississippi. I'm staying with a guy from ADV. That's what happens when you tell me "If you're ever in the area, stop by." Amanda is flying in in about an hour. We are going into New Orleans tomorrow.

My oh so sexy hat. It doubles as a chastity belt.

Well there was this lecherous looking guy on a balcony draped with beads. It came to pass that I offered/dared Amanda $20 to ask the guy for a string of beads. I settled in to watch the show. : ) He tossed her the beads with no strings attached, and then she took my $20. She made out like a bandit on that deal.

Thanks for the reports Jim. Your getting me motivated for my trip later this month. I have to go to San Fransisco for work. I convinced my boss to let me do the trip on the motorcycle. The first response was a definitive "no" at even mentioning the idea. Liability issue for the company if there was an accident. He rides also and was sympathetic to the idea. I suggested, what if I just take vacation days for the time I'm on the road. Stop at various company offices along the way and work. On the clock days I'm in an office and on vacation days I'm on the road. He called HR and they approved.

Paul is a fantastic host. : )

It's a turbo : )

Lunch was good, but dessert was found in the parking lot outside. Amanda thought we were nuts. Until she tried them.

Why yes, I would like to take a ride.

Tired.

I googled from my house to the Buell shop is exactly 1000 miles. Hum, could be an iron butt ride? Well I will probably stop in Cincy and say hi to the family so doubt an Iron Butt. Even so, this will be my furthest ride in one direction, I can not wait.
